Slayers Revolution - 01

Published by Hinano at 9:45 pm under Slayers

Just like Aroduc my old school fire is burning with delight the moment I heard Megumi Hayashibara voicing our orange haired heroine. I’m not covering Sekitits or Mahou Tsukai because I disliked both (as I pretty much expected.) You can read JP’s post on it and well with the slice of life show, why the hell is it just photos of backgrounds? Like I could go take my moblog, add some royalty free music and add a few close up face shots and voila! I made an anime! So basically my Wednesday pick up will be Slayers.

Well what can I say, I love it. I love it because Slayers was one of those few animus that I saw in RM format back in the day then got it in MPEG format for a “Slightly” better quality on like Hotline (if anyone even remembers what that is.) And how I drew a tonload of Slayers fanart and then I snapped a photo of every Lina Inverse cosplayer I could find at Shoujocon 2001. It’s definitely a classic for the “good old days” because at the time anime was still kinda “rare” and not as readily available as it is today.

With that in mind, it made the show sorta special to me and I think someone who is new to the anime scene, even if they were to rewatch the original slayers series to catch up, they may not necessarily get into it. JP who has never seen any of the slayers series (because he refused to watch my RMs - but he will be forced to do so, possibly over the weekend  ) was watching this with me. I asked him “what’s your description of the feelings you have when seeing this?” And basically he said “I bet this is funny to someone who is not me.”

Well frankly it’s not funny to anyone who just wasn’t THERE with the whole Slayers/anime is now just budding in the US thing. It’s one of those old school things that’s going to be hard to grasp. The other problem is, besides being old school (yet digital), the show clearly caters to its fans. It assumes that we know who Lina, Zelgadis, Gourry and Amelia are. It assumes that we know Lina’s trademark move is Dragon Slave, so when some digimon ripoff character shows up and performs it, it’s assumed that we should be just as shocked as Lina.

Speaking of the digimon ripoff character…what the fuck?

I love this show and all but seriously, could you get anymore character design ripoffs?

And the fact that this thing can do Lina’s moves is like putting a damper on the whole thing. But never the less I will proceed to watching this anime, cause let’s face it I’m an old school Slayers fangirl. It’s even better when they use a lot of the same BGMs as from the original series so like I said earlier, they know who the majority of their audience is going to be.

Do I recommend this to new anime fans? Absolutely not. Considering that most of the new shows are moe otaku pandering, this pretty much is the exact opposite of that. So all the Ninomiya-kun and Kanokon fanboys will probably dislike this show becaus the heroine doesn’t throw herself like a whore on any man, she blows them up if they dare mess with her.

    NEED SUB NOOOOOWWWWWWWW!

I wonder if Amelia’s dad is going to show up again… along with some more familiar faces.

LOL Amelia’s dad was awesome, I’m sure we’ll see him at some point again :P

Haven’t had time to seriously watch the episode yet, but I did skim it. A lot of people were saying that Megumi Hayashibara sounds exactly the same as she used to. What I heard, I disagree - she’s lost some of that incredibly piercing high pitch, which is actually an improvement.

Dunno if I’m sold on the show as it is at the moment though. I too am a reasonably oldschool Slayers fan (and I downloaded it via Hotline back in the day too) but I’m not sure whether it still works the same as it did back then. Upon rewatching the series recently, I found that the humor seems a bit tired, among other things.

Hopefully this won’t be padded out with huge amounts of crappy filler like Try was. And I’m also hoping it doesn’t take a billion years to actually get moving.

    High five, old people!

I think you’re underestimating how well-known Slayers is. It’s one of those series that made anime popular in the 90s stateside.

Why wouldn’t recommend Slayers Revolution to new fans? It’s always been a staple series that I recommend to those wanting to get into anime, even today. I assume they’ll be doing some more re-introduction, since it’s been so many years, so there’s no issue there.

  7. Lydia UNITED STATESon 02 Jul 2008 at 11:09 pm

No skipping blogging on this series, either! Ha, ha. Slayers is my most favorite anime EVARRRR. I have seriously watched, like, each individual Slayers series over six times. Ha, ha. NERD PLS. I am pretty much a walking encyclopedia for the series.

Mmm. Me be luvin’ sum Xellos soon. I hope, hope, and hope Filia and baby Valgaav make an appearance…even if they’re not main characters for this season. I liked Filia a lot even though some people dislike her. Xellos x Filia was my first anime shipping. Ha, ha.

^It was certainly the series that made anime a hobby for me.

I’m conflicted on whether I want a lot of old faces to show up or a focus on cohesion and whatever new plot is in the offing. Between occasional party members like Sylphiel, Philionel, and Mirgazia, anime originals like Filia and Zangulus, and all the novel characters we haven’t seen yet it could get too crowded real fast, but I do love all those characters.

nice to see someone else made the digimon reference. that was the first thing that popped into my mind when Aroduc was describing the “thermonuclear fuzball” ^^

SLAYERS!! Slayers was like my 2nd anime ever, after Ranma 1/2. Also, Lina is one of the few anime heroines I have always thought was incredibly awesome. I even had the CPM-released manga…I wonder where that went? Man, memories. *misty-eyed*

    Slayers FTW!
This makes me feel really oldschool… and I feel just great!

Link> Mainly because I’m under the impression that new fans (and when I say new I mean people who have gotten into anime around 2004 and later) are into crap like Death Note or anything moe-related (fanservicy crap lolis etc) so I don’t think this will appeal to them.

NZ> I actually agree with you on Lina not sounding “quite” the same. You’re right that “high pitch yelling” is definitely not there haha, but ain’t no thang I’m still lovin’ it :)

Was that the one from the 3rd season of digimon? And is there ANY difference?

  16. DS UNITED STATESon 03 Jul 2008 at 12:52 am

I love Lina Inverse!!! She was always a favorite.

Anyway, I’m older than all of you, HAHAHA, because I first saw Slayers in 1996!!! Yes, my college club (I told u I was old!) showed the first season back then even one of the movies (Naga’s breasts — the original fanservicey gravity-defying boobs!!!). I didn’t watch most of the other seasons till much later (2001-2) when would drop in at another anime club.

Maybe this will spark a Slayers cosplay revival. Move over Bleach, Naruto and Death Note, or be Dragon-Slaved!!!!!! And those anti-fansubbers too, HAHAHAHAHA

  17. Shin MALAYSIAon 03 Jul 2008 at 12:55 am

Funny enough, despite the fact I’m all for moe, I want to watch this now only because of your last paragraph. At least I’m rest assured it isn’t going to turn like the new Gunslinger Girl.

  18. maaku_sutipen PHILIPPINESon 03 Jul 2008 at 1:25 am

This was dubbed when it (the old, original) got broadcasted here in the Philippines. I was only in my elementary school back then. It pretty much made me like Anime a lot!

The localization of the anime here was spectacular! In retrospect, I compare the localized script with the original Japanese transcriptions and they were pretty much dead on.

It so nice to hear Lina’s incantation of Dragon Slave in your own language that is translated very closely to the original text and actually is in sync with the mouth of the character on screen. XD

The only difference though that her signature move is called “Big Bang/Explosive” translated into English though.

I actually bought the VHS tapes for Slayers Next when I visited the dealers’ room at Otakon 2000! Good to hear that Revolution has been finding favour with old fans. So sad that You’re Under Arrest: Full Throttle was such a miserable disappointment in most respects (except for the ED huk huk).

  20. The Sojourner SINGAPOREon 03 Jul 2008 at 2:17 am

What is holding me back from watching this is the fact that my impression on Slayers is very vague. It has been years since I last watched it and I really cannot remember anything about it.

    Oh well.

*Joins the Old Fart High Five*

This episode made me soooooo happy. I even like the digimon ripoff somehow. Maybe it’s just that from initial art I was expecting annoying mascot and instead we’re given “Check me out I’ve got a ‘tude.” Normally I hate the Sonic trend, but it works for the little guy.

But anyway, happy Slayers fanboy here. The anime that got me into anime is back. Huzzah!

Yeah this was pretty exciting. I was worried I wouldn’t like it anymore since Slayers is so different from current anime, and I was a lot easier to please when I was younger… but the nostalgia was there, I found it funny, and just nice to experience it all over again. I think I watched Slayers when I was in 7th grade. And I really miss the quality old anime had… so it’s nice to see they reproduced the style and mixed it with computer animating nicely.

The digimon ripoff thing really bothers me though ^^; I hope it.. doesn’t.. ruin things too much

I’ve only watched the OP and ED so far and I’ll say, as a ‘Slayers’ fan: I can die happy now. It was everything I could’ve ever hoped for. TTwTT Love this series so much; oh the nostagia…

  28. jpmeyer UNITED STATESon 03 Jul 2008 at 10:43 am

None of you guys are TRUE Slayers fans unless you bought all of the VHS tapes at MSRP sight unseen.

  29. DeathToZippermouth UNITED STATESon 03 Jul 2008 at 12:57 pm

I have half of the original VHS tapes; half of first season, all of Next (I first watched the first half of original by renting since I was a poor high school student.) Then DVDs appeared and that seemed like a fine idea, so I first had Try as DVD and then later bought First and Next again. That enough of a True Fan for you?

  30. Beren SPAINon 03 Jul 2008 at 3:41 pm

Slayers, yeah! This brings back some good memories… Actually, the Slayers anime was quite popular in Spain when it was first broadcasted, towards the end of the 90s, and the dub was simply amazing!

I hope this new season lives up to the expectations that all the Slayers fans have!

On a sidenote, should I be depressed by the fact that ‘getting a boyfriend/girlfriend’ in the current poll is like the lowest-scoring option so far? :D

It’s like animu fans are saying either a) I’ve already got one, or b) real boys/girls can’t measure up to their 2D counterparts, so I’ll settle for my hand/dildo/whatever-toy instead and stick with looking for h-games and h-anime…

Hinano: Currently in another guild, ATM. Still, the results of the poll make me suspect that a lot of these people voting for those other options are probably more likely to be watching Genshiken II Ep 5 and enjoying material like it than anything else, despite their protests.

But yeah, you can tell what that studio’s worked on, to judge by the skillful execution of those scenes. ;)
