Manga Review: Kaichou wa Maid-sama! Vol. 5

Published by Hinano at 9:13 pm under Manga

Picked this up yesterday along with the Newtype magazine. Also FYI the next volume will be released in the fall ;_; Such a long wait for Shoujo manga tankoubon releases… :cry: They really should turn this into an anime…it would be such an awesome shoujo series. I mean really if they can make an anime out of Special A, they really can make one out of this. The two actually have a lot in common - especially the part about the heroine being dense as a brick and the main guy being head over heels for her! I actually enjoyed this volume (especially the last chapter) but I was really disappointed as I felt the buildup for all the shoujoey moments was in vain…because after the build up - there was nothing. :|

The beginning of the volume just deals with one of the maids falling in love for some unknown band members and them treating her like trash…which of course leads Misa to kick all their asses. The majority of the manga focuses on that kaichou asshole from the other school who sends his guys to buy out the cafe Misa works. They plan to buy it out and turn it into a Butler Cafe instead. :lol: In order to chose their butlers they have this competition for guys, and of course Misa and Subaru dress up as guys and participate. During the competition they discover that Subaru’s a girl but Misa is determined not to drop out so she does the unexpected above ↑

Haha Usui will have NONE of that. For once I have to agree with Usui that I’d rather Misaki be a girl than a reverse trap ^^;;;

Usui as usual hurts himself in order to protect Misaki but she eventually can’t stand it so she drops out of the competition. Oh well it all works out in the end because they get to keep their cafe for now…

Anyway the best (and hawtest chapter :twisted: ) is the last one (ch. 24) where Misaki visits Usui to help him recover. She discovers a few things: 1) he wears glasses (therefore setting off my moe weakness and making me drool all over the place :twisted: ) 2) He lives in an apartment by himself but his apartment only has a couch and a table. He sleeps on the couch e_e; 3) He refuses to talk about his parents and says he doesn’t need to “keep in contact” with them. 4) his nutritious meals consist of those vitamin jelly things.

She of course tends to his needs by cooking oversaulted soup, and giving him a sponge bath…which of course requires her to undress him :twisted:

As she starts babbling about how he always does stuff for her and she can’t do anything for him the above happens.

…and basically the manga ends on this note. See what I mean by disappointing? If I was the mangaka they’d already be making out on the next page :mad: The good news is in the preview for volume 6 Misaki SHOULD now be more aware of her feelings towards Usui…hopefully that’ll lead to something good…Also next volume focuses on trap-chan Aoi.

    thank you for the summary.
    i really hope the next volume has some super usui x misaki moments. ^^
    oh.. i think the 1st chapter is about one of the girls at school and not a maid.

    FINALLY! What this series needed was some character development for Usui (cause seriously until now his only character motivation was having a crush on Misaki), and now we finally got some. Yay, manga ka!

    Crazy antics are fun and fine, but if a manga is gonna be AWESOME you have to have the character development too.

    *now really wants to get vol 5*

    OMG!!! Usui with glasses… <3
    I hate buying through amazon japan but seeing him with glasses is so totally worth it. :twisted:

    Eileen> Maybe..? Haha I didn’t really find it that interesting so I probably forgot :S

    L-chan> Haha yea that’s true although I don’t mind that either :twisted:

    John> Aw come on…I’d only have 3 volumes of them making out. The other 2 would be hugging and holding hands. :oops:

    blissmo> eh you seem more into shounen stuff anyway xD I didn’t think this would be your cup of tea anyway

    Scheris> Amazon.jp is a pain in the ass I personally stopped buying there as well :S Have you tried maybe requesting them from sasugabooks? I think also yesasia and fujisan.com may have them.

  9. Scheris UNITED STATESon 17 May 2008 at 12:02 am

    No, I’m not in NY. If I were in NY I would’ve met you during the TMR concert. :smile:
    Yeah, the main store doesn’t have it anymore but a second store in NY has it so I ordered it from there. :razz:

    OMG HAWTNESS! :twisted: Usui + glasses + blushing = fangirling

    Shoujo mangas don’t need cliff hangers the mangaka should know we’re all in it for the pairings so give us what we want. :sad:

    sadly, lots of more deserving shoujo mangas don’t get animated, sigh… :cry: *thinks of Tokyo Crazy Paradise, HanaKimi, Cipher, etc*

    Oooh seems interesting, though I find it’s quite dangerous for me to read manga because when I’m done it’s usually 8 hours later, 6am in the morning, and I’m dead tired. x_x;;

    For a brief second I thought this was a post about Kamen No Maid Guy. :( Love that stupid show.

    I read a few volumes of this and never really got into it. After School Nightmare if enough gender-bending for me. But I was taken by the character design. It’s rare that the actual artwork speaks to me more than the writing.

    I find Naruto & Bleach to be depressing enough at the moment; and neither of them counts as shoujo.

    That’s too bad you didn’t like this, it’s actually one of my favorite ongoing mangas right now :)
