RenAi Blogger: An Early Look

Well since some people like to see progress here is some progress for you!
I jumped head first into programming last night and getting familiar with Ren’Py and the codes. Sure it involved me screaming out loud “what the fuck is wrong with this stupid thing” (And JP can attest to that) but eventually I got something going. I wrote out a couple lines just for testing purposes but I’ll probably do dialogue in greater detail once I get the paths & routes all smoothed out. At least the “basic” skeleton is done so it’s art, programming and writing from here on out!
P.S. Anyone recommend a good FREE sound FX site? All the ones I found require you to either register or buy their CD :S And Flashkit doesn’t have as many options as I would have liked.

Wow, it looks great!
Keep up the good work. http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/pir/PIRsfx.shtml and http://www.soundsnap.com/ have some free simple SFX. Hope they help.
Thanks Mika, I’ve seen partners in rhyme but not yet soundsnap. PS Love the Kid avatar xD

Rule of programming: If you’re not cursing, you’re not coding.
If you’ve ever watched the show Hell’s Kitchen (and if not, it’s the reality show with a pro British chef cursing out amateurs competing for a spot on his restaurant), I’ve managed to out-swear him when on a programming binge. XD
Good to see it coming along well, keep it up. ^^ Do those buttons with letters on them in that screenshot mean anything or is that just debug?
CCY> The buttons are just a decoration haha, just part of the dialogue box nothing else. ^^ They’re actually not buttons, they’re the logos of the NY subway trains
Hah, I like the subway icons.
New York Citay! *thinking of Pace salsa commercial*
Ah the NYC subway system has cut you a advertising deal, so is Pizza Hut on board too?
haha no Pizza Butt in my game
Where’s the image of me
I wanna see
Impz> XD I haven’t drawn it yet. I figured I’d keep it a surprise or maybe show a screenshot once I get that far. You’re actually really in only 1 of the girls’ stories (not saying which one
) so I’m trying to keep it a mystery for now
Ren’Py creator here again. A couple things:
- I like the subway theme, as my dad actually works for the TA.
- I’ve creates a new way to create the main menu from imagemaps. It will be released in Ren’Py 6.6.2, but I’ve posted a preview here, that you can download and add to your game if you want.
- If you get stuck with Ren’Py, feel free to IM me. I’m renpytom on AIM, and I’m on other systems as well.
Tom> Wow that sounds awesome!! Will we also be able to customize the options menu as well? It’s so boring just having be some round buttons & a white screen to be honest
Thanks for the AIM, I’ll add you next time I’m online.
Only question really is, is there an easier way to define coordinate points? I’m really bad with that stuff, and I’ve always just used dreamweaver when it came to coordinates since I could just take a box and draw it over the area I want.
Sure. It’s often easier to just ask me the answer to a question than trying to puzzle it out from the manual.
It’s pretty easy to add a background image to the game menu (the preferences and the load/save screen), and to change the colors of various interface elements.
You can also change from the default look of buttons and such. (See the themes page here.)
While you can replace buttons and labels with images, it’s hard to do so. There are lots of buttons in the interface, and many of them can be in 3 or 4 or 5 different states. So while it’s possible, it’s difficult, just due to the complexity of the problem.
Good luck, hope to see the beta version soon.
Rule of programming: If you’re not cursing, you’re not coding.
Have heard that in action. xD (Dad’s a PC Programmer. Either he’s annoyed at his coworkers, or something’s gone HORRIBLY WRONG. xD Unless it’s late at night, when he’s cursing at GuildWars).
The Subway things are kewl. =D Personally never liked the subway though. xD (back to school I gooo)
Shin> i’d probably release a “beta tester” version for a couple people (the people in the game of course get first dibs xD) and if they run through it without bugs etc then I will release to the public. Last night I sorta went on a roll and did like a “run down” so each scene was like 1 sentence “hi my name is ____ and I like ____” then you go to next scene etc.
Nyachan> haha well since it does take place in NYC I figured a subway would be a good theme to use xD
Tom> Awesome thanks. I guess I’ll stick to the round button theme as long as I can add some sort of background. I’m not concerned with asthetics at this time so I’ll have to bug you later. I’m just trying to get the game routes working so I can make sure when I add text & stuff everything works XD
You can find a lot of good material at http://wiki.renai.us/wiki/Resource_Links …
Thats like, the second time I’ve seen the subway icons (hint: I don’t go outside much
) This means I can learn more about the real world with this game! AWESOME-NESS!!!! Can’t wait for the beta, and I’ll be a good sport and give a donation *puts 2 dollars and a box of Pocky in donation piggy bank*
=3
I don’t know much about SFX sites, but I work in the library in my uni’s drama department, and we have tons of SFX CDs. I’ll assume you’re a college graduate here, and suggest you see if your alum status will get you privileges in your drama library (if you have one).
Madame> XD unfortunately my college is in a different state and it was a tiny ass state college (mine being the ghetto location reject) so I never bothered joining their alumni association. eh I guess the game won’t die if I’m missing a sound effect or two so I’ll just try to use the sources some of the people suggested above
Neat. Keep those updates coming!
