Evangelion Movie 1.01: A Visual Comparison

I’m sure by now everyone’s sick of the Eva movie posts but now that the DVD is finally out (no I didn’t bother watching the cam rip lol) I decided to do a comparison to the retro Eva DVDs that JP had. (I never had Eva DVDs because my Eva episodes were in VivTV and MPEG
10 points if you know what VivTV is. ) I had no idea what this movie consisted of but it’s literally Evangelion episodes 1-6 smushed into 1 hour and 37 minutes that have been completely reanimated with super CG angels! Since just rewatching them in movie form would be boring I figured the most fun thing to do is compare! And boy did the retro waves of 90s animation hit me hard. Massive image flood after the jump!
Ritsuko fanservice shot down!
Tokyo-3 suddenly got more populated
In the movie Misato prefers Kirin beer.
The food on the left looks a lot more appetizing
Shamshel: Now complete with extra moving tentacles!
Nipples! How scandalous!
Blue stonelike drill vs pink ribbed dildo
Chubby shota vs hot bishie who looks 10 years older!
Gainax making up to Rei’s fanboys.

Some kinda new additions that was not in the original series included the scene of Misato showing Shinji lillith (whose random human bodies were more mobile than ever) as well as Kaworu in a box at the end. Wait do angels come out of boxes in this movie? XD It looked like a few had already been opened!
Also who the heck was the girl with the 2 pigtails in the preview? That wasn’t Hikari was it? I wonder if they’re gonna make Touji die in the movie like he did in the manga. All I know is…I want my Asuka to come in (and grab Shinji’s butt manga style
)

I know this is probably a stupid question but why have they done this?
marmot> Why does gainax always milk stuff from eva?
Hinano is an Evatard???? !!!!! ?????
Movie Asuka should be cool. Bring on that yellow dress!
Anno wanted to make a new one now that he’s not crazy.
marmot: Because EVA’s still making money, and Gainax is still squeezing blood from the stone.
Much less scary, Rei is… which means she’s cuter, especially in that last shot. The moonlight-style lighting’s a nice touch too. Personally, I can’t wait to see how they do Magmadiver in this rework.
JohnG: I think the Rei fanservice got amped up because he’s now less crazy, and wants to get a few more dollars out of Rei since the fanboys embraced her… and he’s no longer trying to screw with their heads.
I’m one of the 5 people on the internet who has not seen Evangelion.
I haven’t seen Evangelion yet either, although I just downoaded the full series, I’ll be watching it soon. Then this.
I know this is probably a stupid question but why have they done this?
To make money. Do they need any other reason?
You didn’t show the totally awesome origami Angel effects! I think that was the best part of the movie.
Me to my friends: “zomg the new Eva movie is so awesome the blue-diamond Angel does origami now”
Friends: “go away”
All this did was just remind be how much I miss and valued traditional cell animation. So sad
I prefer Rei’s smile in the original…
well, I guess new Eva wins a lot, but loses some, too…
Everybody> (since there are a lot of repeat questions) If Hollywood can do remakes of old movies, why can’t Gainax.
Haesslich> I think the proverbial stone is dust now after previous squeezing for blood. Can you still squeeze blood from dust? Philosophizing time!
The movie seems to be just a rehash of the series, only upgraded with l33tspankingneweffectsandreanimation. Like a game patch. Wait, if you go according to version numbering convention, this would be at least Eva v1.5, hell, by right it should be Eva v2.0 given it is totally upgraded with a new engine. 0.01 increments are for minor errata.
If I remember, the DVD version was also corrected from the movie version which was corrected from the series version. So if you are a true eva fanatic, you’d watch the movie AND rewatch it on dvd as well.
Personally, I don’t think it is translating to a movie version that well since it IS a long plot that is more suited to a series. Gainax is just chunking 3 hours of show into (checks hinano’s length) 1 hour 37 minutes. >_> From what I happen to see in the Shana movie, that involves removing a lot of the non-essential fluff, like minor characters (yay! no yoshida! :3) Sexy Friagne~~ (heart)
In essence, movies are constrained when it comes to telling a story as they are time limited. Hell it took Lucas 2 decades to tell the complete story of Darth Vader. And there are still things we’d like to know more.
PS. Rei is a one dimensional character. Vital to the plot but essential she doesn’t have character at all. Now Asuka… now THAT is a girl who has some seriously good fuckedup character. Fraulein Asuka FTW!!! >_>
In all honesty I think the character designs had a real facelift, but on the other hand, that retro feeling of Eva being my 2nd anime back in the early 2000s and how it was so cool and deep ..I dunno it’s just not the same anymore. I think if Eva came out now, I may not have gotten into it.
It just looks a wee bit nicer.
Still doesn’t change the fact that he’s a reflection of what the Ultranationalists really want. And ironically, he is one of them.
Good post.
I don’t know why people are complaining why Gainax redid EVA. As a fan I was exhilarated that they did a facelift without alternating the storytelling. You can’t tell me that the new movie is not better than the old.
I remember some one saying there is going to be a 2nd eva series. If it were to be true I can’t see it being able to live up to its predecessor.
That someone is wrong, have you seen the End of Eva movie?
This is one of the most BEAUTIFUL and INTRIGUING anime in the HISTORY. The REANIMATION is fantastic and I want to rewatch it AGAIN……
Thanks for sharing! It’s puzzling why people are seeing Rebuild of Evangelion series as a ripoff - although they did not change the storyline significantly (except the battle of Ramiel part, where Nerv built a concrete fortress in the new film), they’ve retouched every single scene of the anime. I applaud their effort to revive the anime even if it’s already 13 years old. They’ve preserved the visual cues and effects of the original anime, and this is rarely done for many other film remakes.
Finally the facial structures of the characters do not change drastically between shots, and they’ve even incorporated very dazzling CGI effects for the dramatic scenes (such as Ramiel’s battle).
The scene where Shinji rushes out of the shower naked still gave me a very good laugh!
P.S. I also did a visual comparison on my blog a few days back… great minds think alike
teddy> for some reason your blog wouldn’t load for me
Hello, sorry for invading your blog like this but a friend linked me to this and I was wondering if you ever read the doujinshi Evangelion Re-Take? It’s a 6-part series of an alternative ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion series. It’s pretty epic and in my opinion much more satisfying than the series’ original ending. Since you seem to like Asuka, you should enjoy it - as it is focused primarily on the dynamics of Shinji/Asuka.
Be warned it does have some hentai, but it decreases with each volume - and honestly it’s so not the point of the series! Which really can’t be said for many doujinshi nowadays!
So if you sound interested here’s a link to view it online:
http://mango.zuiken.net/main.php?g2_itemId=6674
And, er - don’t judge the doujinshi by the volume covers. They seem a little provocative, but there really isn’t that much hentai!
Ha, sorry again for coming on your blog like this, but I hope you enjoy the doujinshi.
Stephanie> Yes I read it before in fact, and Yes I really liked it.
Everyone likes eva. Everyone knows you’re not cool unless you like eva!
I definitely can’t wait for Asuka!!! and I was like WTF when Kaworu came out of that coffin like thing. I don’t recall that ever happening… manga perhaps?
@ juu: I’m also a fan of the goofy-Rei-smile. It seems abit more realistic, since she said she doesn’t know what expression to have during those situations (alt: She doesn’t know how to smile, so shes trying her best to do it).
I have all the manga released to date…that definitely did not happen. XD
Well, at least we got an excuse to see Kaworu naked again! BANZAI!!!
(btw, I absolutely love this smiley!)
No, it’s a definite rework - this didn’t happen in the manga at all, although he does get to show he’s a bastard there too.
I guess they had to work him in somehow, since one of the complaints was that he showed up too suddenly and then died. This is a way to start off, especially as the audience is ALREADY spoiled regarding his identity.
IMO, some of the older scenes look a little better than the newer ones. Then again, it could just be me who thinks so. And what have they done to wimpy Shinji? Now everyone who started Evangelion with the new movie will think that he’s cool >_>
Hinano/Steph> Skimmed though the stuff. Seems the alternative ending is much better thought of.
OMG–you saw Eva for the first time with VivTV too??? That, my friend, was the start of my fandom right there, a VivTV bootleg copy of Eva, watched over New Years’ 2000. Can I have my 10 points now?
Fantastic guide, btw–it really puts the graphical upgrade this movie got compared to the TV in sharp relief. I have used it in my review of the movie.
(If you are reading this, ADV, know that I have bought all the original DVDs, the Director’s Cut, AND the Platinum edition box set over the years. :))
Mike> You win the internets. XD I actually watched the vivtV, then the dub on VHS, then the sub in MPEG and JP had the DVDs that I used to watch simultaneously as the movie.
The changed a lot, though. They kept the Blood pattern part (Angels have blue blood, humans have red) but all the angels were spilling red blood (which, by the way, was awesome because it was everywhere. Nice effects!). There were other plot differences whcih I don’t remember right now but remember that they should have a change on the plot of the story. (right, remembered one, coughad**amcough)
I don’t mind though, the movies are a bit lighter on philosphy and more on expression, so I think it’d do a better job in portray the series.
Angels had red blood in the original (example - any time Eva1 ate its way out of a problem), it was just the blood pattern that was blue.
[...] Hinano of Ex-Fansubber has written a very interesting scene by scene visual comparison of the Evangelion 1.0 remake. Scenes from the original Evangelion series are placed side by side with the remake and the differences are astounding. All the characters appears to be slimmer and more slender and the animations are richer in detail and color. Can’t wait to get my hands on the DVD release here ! Ex-Fansubber - Evangelion Movie 1.01: A Visual Comparison [...]
Besides the angels having red blood modification, the remake also make dead angels pop like blood balloons. Interesting, although I’m yet to figure out the significance of this.
