Soul Eater - 03
So as
recommended by someone in my late show post from last week I guess I’ll continue blogging both broadcasts until it’s apparent that the differences are too minor. The end of the episode confirmed that the prologue is over and that the story will begin. I’ve really jumped on the Soul Eater bandwagon after NYCC. I even jumped on a shipping wagon so expect fangirling about Maka and Soul sooner rather than later.
Anyway let’s move on to this week’s character introduction: Death the Kid.
So not having read the manga I didn’t know what to expect but based on the previews I came up with “The son of shinigami voiced by Miyano Mamoru, with funky hair, and 2 big breasted gun girls.” I was pretty much spot on except for the fact that this guy has a ridiculous obsessive compulsive disorder with symmetry. You know like how your mom always goes “I think I left the oven on. OH MY GOD OUR HOUSE IS GONNA BURN DOWN TURN THE CAR AROUND!” It’s the same thing except “I THINK MY PICTURE IS FRAMED UNEVENLY, DROP EVERYTHING I’M GOING HOME TO CHECK!”
So basically his entire motivation in life is to have everything be symmetrical. His father (aka the Grim Repear) tells him that he doesn’t really have to go through all the stuff the other kids have to, (aka what in Japan is called the elevator system)…but he insists that he wants to do this on his own, and he actually has to do double the work because he has 2 weapons. But really the only reason he has 2 weapons is to be symmetrical and that’s about it.
Now let’s go into his weapons. He wields 2 guns who turn into 2 big boobed sisters named Patty and Liz (who is the older one). Liz is the one with a brain in her head and is pretty realistic about everything. She naturally gets freaked out when there’s a giant mummy in her face, and she smacks Kid in the head when he grabs her boobs complaining they’re not the same as her sisters. Patty on the other hand has that “bokeppuri” thing going for her and she doesn’t seem to give a crap about anything. She kinda just goes with the flow - and when the going gets tough she gets going.
Having competent weapons helps since their owner is an incompetent idiot. As I’m watching this I think “is the Maka/Soul the only competent team in this seris?
” It’s like the other two teams have the incompetent masters and the competent weapons. Makes you wonder how the hell they got together in the first place. Maybe we’ll see some flashbacks & find out. So far the series is going pretty well for me. The only thing I’m giving a thumbs down to is the repeated speech/3D castle at the beginning. BONES also did this for FMA where they said that stupid Touka Koukan speech for like every episode.
Upcoming Attractions: Looks like we finally get some footage of the teams working together on missions. I plan to read the manga one of these days now that I’m finally caught up on REBORN.

I actually like Death the Kid despite the fact that he has a symmetrical mental illness. I think his hair is cool.
What makes it better is that he’s voiced by Mamoru.
But I guess Maka and Soul are the most compatible team.
The intro is pretty obnoxious, I agree.
That’s why I skip the intro right until the op starts.

I like Kid and his OCD, and actually he is my favorite, him and soul. Although he can be seen as an incompetent idiot… never mind, I don’t want to spoil you.
BTW Are scans of the manga Vol. 9-11 available anywhere?
no matter where I look it seems like vol. 8 is the last one anyone has uploaded
Did you start reading it?
I’ll try asking someone in the forums I use.
Anyway, no one has uploaded those, at least that I know of.
Nah not yet, I’m trying to finish Inukami this week but possibly I will start reading the scans at work or something.
I mean I COULD go buy them at Kinokuniya but yea I’m being a cheapass now. Maybe by the time I read all 8 someone will have posted 9-11? XD
Right I forgot you were reading a bunch of mangas.
Probably someone will but who knows when.
yea I’m trying to like catch up on all the crap I downloaded or began to follow. (I really need to catch up on Trigun Maximum but since they took the scans down I’ve been to lazy to go out and download them since Trigun wasn’t exactly exciting enough to make me want to read more.)
the intro before the OP has got to go.
makes me think that they’re just doing it to buy time.
I like the CG sun thing at the beginning. The thing I don’t like is how the make shinigami-sama talk again and again. His VA doesn’t fit him that well. My first reaction to his voice was wtf he doesn’t sound like I imagined he would.
Just like half to other characters in this series.
By now the only voice I just can’t get used to is Death and shinigami-sama.
If you’re looking for volumes 9+ there are magazine scans up at Mangahelpers (http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12757). I’m pretty sure they’re caught up to the monthly chapters.
Blank> thanks, I saw some scans up at that thread (i bookmarked it and thats where i got vol 1-8!) but I was hoping there’d be a cleaner tankoubon scan somewhere XD
Kona> For some reason the voices don’t really bother me much.
collation> Yea especially during late night show
It seems like their weaknesses are proportionally as debiiltating as their strengths. Without a doubt, Kid’s the most powerful of the three but he’s also got the most debilitating weakness. Maka is probably the weakest in terms of talent of the three, at least at first, but she has no crippling weakness.
John> Yea seems so
I mean when he gets down to business he pretty much kicks serious ass but otherwise he’s a dork lol. But what about blackstar? I mean he seems to suck no matter what xD
BlackStar is pretty powerful - he actually possesses all the assassin/ninja skills and has the unique attack that does not require a weapon. His problem is that his weakness completely negates his talent. He’s one of those “I’m only good when I’m serious” archetypes, this plays off ironically when the storyline becomes serious business.
So…basically he’s like Naruto.
Yeah pretty much except he wants more attention. Makka and Soul are basically the most compatible but the most incompatible partner actually is Black Star and Soul XD.
Machi> Haha yes I just read chapter 3 today…
It took me forever to get to ch3 just because chapter 0 was insanely long. And I even skipped bklack star and tsubaki’s prologue because it was beginning to be a drag.
What does “bokeppuri” mean?
There’s another character who comes up with his weapon whom I like (not for his insanity, but his funny weird moments) named Dr. Franken Stein whose weapon was Maka’s dad, now the Grim Reaper’s weapon since they were able to collect the 99 souls + 1 witch soul. (the manga-ka likes to play off of names of well known fictional characters or real people)
As seen in volume 2, they still work quite well together and I think are a competent duo. (despite what, uh, Stein may have done to him during their time working together as students. Go read it to find out if you haven’t already ;))
I think the speech was just for the three prologue stories because it doesn’t appear in episode 4. And those prologues serve as introductions to the characters anyway so to me it made sense to do the “This is ShiniblabhblahGakuenblahblah, otherwise known as SHIBUSEN–Here is our mission statement. Enjoy” for those.
The series gets better as it progresses I find.
