New York Comic Con ‘08 Report

Published by Hinano at 12:46 am under Conventions, Soul Eater

Just for the record - Saturday is the only day I’ve attended and that’s it for me. My brain, ears and toes can take no more of the insanity. I really wish I could have met a lot more people than I did, but it goes to show you that if you really want to meet someone - get their cell phone number. Meeting up at a place or hoping to catch them at XYZ is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Alright so in the morning we had our last bag of Hotcakes, dressed up in our Reborn gear and headed off to the Javitz center.

DS was already there and unlike at other cons, he was already out of line by the time we arrived. I had planned to attend the T.M.Revolution panel at 12 and when we walked in at around 11:50 the room felt like someone threw me into a fanboy armpit. It was hot, it smelled like shit and then we got kicked out anyone because apparently the room had to be cleared out before they would let anyone in. They also said to “form a line” but before we knew it, a line had already been formed and it wrapped around the entire freaking panel hallway.

After recalling my line nightmare last month I said “fuck it” and left. I could have probably done what my friend did and just walked in like 10 minutes after it started, but I didn’t wanna sit in said armpit room for an hour while people screamed like idiots in my ear. (That was to come later but anyway.) Instead we headed over to the Yen Press panel mainly because I had picked up some of their posters earlier from the dealer room. (Yay Soul Eater and Spiral! Well I got a Haruhi one too but my Haruhi fandom is so 2006.) Basically if you went to the Yen Press panel, I was the one yelling out all the title names when they went “can anyone guess what this is?” Some guys sitting behind us at least recognized Higurashi. I was pumped to hear about Sumomomomomomo but then I was disappointed because they didn’t have any Momoko promo posters I could grab.

Also the guys sitting behind us recognized me as Haru (Yet no one seemed to pick up that JP was Hibari - instead everyone kept thinking he was a Persona cosplayer :roll: ) At least 5 people recognized who we were. One girl thought I was Saya from Blood+ (?_?) otherwise it was “persona persona” etc. Anyway after Yen Press ended I wanted to meet up with Gia but she’s too cool for school and never replied to my emails. Instead we went to walk around the massive dealer room, 99% of which didn’t really interest me. Actually I think I took more photos of anime figures on display than of cosplayers this time around.

After the massive dealer room walk I met up with my friend and her friends. We had a chat about stuff and then we grabbed some pretzels from a food cart which actually wasn’t much cheaper than the ripoff food at the Javitz Center (lol $3.50 for a bottle of coke). After we met up with DS again we once again went back to the dealer’s room because we were supposed to catch some costume contest but by the time we got there it had actually ended. So we walked around some more and found like 2 anime related dealers (we apparently hadn’t covered 1 small area of the dealers room). I also found Ryuusuke Hamamoto who did those Puchi-Eva things.

Once it hit 4:30 we headed to the lower east side for some Yakiniku. I swear I bring everyone I know to yakiniku so if you come hang out with me and JP, you will probably eat yakiniku at least once. :twisted: We went to Yakiniku West because Juku opened like half an hour later and we wanted to get back in time for the line. We got back pretty late but my friend was already waiting in line so we actually didn’t have to wait that long. Before getting in line though I was attacked by some Reborn cosplayers and one of them who was also cosplaying Hibari was incredibly pissed (I think?) that people kept thinking she was a Persona cosplayer. Actually at a Pinkberry in the lower east side one guy looked at us and pointed his fingers to his forehead imitating Persona and I’m like ?_? He’s like “aren’t you guys from persona?” “No. :mad:

Anyway by 8 they let us into the TMR concert. They basically spent an hour goofing off with the cameras and zooming in on people’s signs that said “TMR I want your babies” or something. They also zoomed in on this girl cosplaying Naruto who looked like she was injected with 30ml of sugar water. Seriously looking at her made me realize how much I fucking hate Naruto and all its fans. :evil: They also kept zooming in on like half nakid pics of TMR from someone’s photo book and all the fangirls screamed and ovulated.

Once the concert began the screams started it was hyped. I tried to get some of it on my camera but they had a stupid no video no photo rule. On top of that they had a “no standing on chairs” rule which is hard because if you’re in the back and the entire floor is even (as opposed to an actual concert auditorium) it’s fucking hard to see!! The only way I was able to see TMR at points is if I jumped on the chair. My friend and her friend were on the chair the whole time because they’re under 5 foot tall and they really couldn’t see period. At one point some bitch came by and told me no cameras. Hey guess what slutbag, it’s a PHONE now go die in a fire.

Anyway after that it kinda went downhill for me to the point where my feet were aching and I just sat down. Also the concert should have been called “Takanari Makes Gundam” because he sang at least 4 Gundam songs. The only Gundam song I approve of is Ignited and the rest are blah. However all this changed the moment he said “I’m going to now perform the opening them to Soul Eater”. I was like “YESS YESS” and jumped up and down and broke the rules and stood on the chair. :twisted: Man I was so into that song I was like about to fly off the chair, actually I probably would have had some fag with a corncob up his ass not come by and make me get off. Well whatever I got to jump through most of that song on the chair - and ironically enough I had my eyes on the screen with the Soul Eater footage rather than on TMR :twisted:

After that he did some songs I didn’t really know so I just sad through them. My feet felt like I was doing yakiniku on them. :cry: At the end he sang “Heart of Sword” from Kenshin and me and JP couldn’t help but yell out “Futae no Kiwami” catchphrases. :lol: After the encore he sang Hot Limit and some other gundam song (*barf*). Once he was saying I love new york and thank yous and stuff we took the opportunity to get out cause JP had to go to the bathroom and we wanted to beat the mob. It was amazing but when we walked out of the center the concert was like the ONLY thing still running. Everything else had been barricaded and closed. My ears felt like someone stuffed 10 cotton balls in them. Good thing a lot of people were leaving the center though as I felt much safer following a giant weeaboo mob than walking alone through deserted streets in the dark.

My overall impression is pretty meh. TMR is really why I came here. I like his music rather than being a TMR fangirl. My friend’s friend was pretty upset that she couldn’t get his autograph because his fanclub from Japan got first dibs on everything. Apparently they all got VIP Passes (which mind you were $500 per person…and let’s not discuss the $35 TMR Concert shirts they had in the dealer’s room..and each one of them was wearing it.) Japanese fans are so freaking hard core. They’ll spend anything to get what they want and they are like super devoted. It reminded me of the crazies who flew here to Otakon 04 to see L’arc En Ciel. It was hillarious too watching them sit in like this tight little square while in the weeaboo line everyone was like spread out or sitting in a circle or just kinda relaxed. It almost felt like they were there stricly on loyalty business rather than to actually enjoy a concert or something. :mad:

The good news is there was a lack of yaoi fangirls, at least throughout most of the con. Like you had the idiots at the TMR concert which is pretty much expected but throughout the con the worst you got is the comic book nerds who kept stopping in the middle of the paths or the camera guys who would walk backwards and screw up the flow of traffic. Oh yea the slutty old hag cosplayers I could have done without too. There was a loli Shugo Chara cosplayer but it felt wrong asking her for a photo. =_=;;

Anyway as usual the photos are here. Be sure to click “New York Comic con” on the left or they get all meshed together. Also I’ve uploaded what I could of my TMR footage below. Pardon the crap footage, as I was all the way in the back and I couldn’t see jack. I also had to cover up the screen of my phone so that the moron staffers wouldn’t see it from far away. :mad: I don’t see what the big deal is, they should fucking know that by allowing people to even BRING in their cameras, at least 1 of them is gonna get most of it not the whole thing recorded. By Monday I bet the entire thing will be youtubed anyway.

Will I come back next year? Only if there’s another guest or musical artist I want to see, otherwise it was really boring. Also tomorrow I’m going to try to catch TMR at Kinokuniya but I have a feeling his little psycho fanclub will probably barricade everything. :mad:

    You left out the part where the girl had the sign on the monitor that said “MARRY ME TMR!” and had her number, and you punched me because I started dialing it.

    That concert was pretty awesome. For a dude that completely looks like a chick, he rocked.

    You just half-killed me, he sang Ignited and Resonance… :sad:

    So maybe it was not so bad I skipped the concert?

    So what’s this girl’s number? I’ll call her say TMR is already married but I’m his younger brother and … OK maybe not :razz:

    I always brace myself when I read your con reviews…..like I’m expecting anything and everything to go wrong lol. Sometimes I wonder if there is such a thing as a “good con” :twisted:

  8. Sabrina-Fair UNITED STATESon 20 Apr 2008 at 8:52 am

    At the very least it was an improvement from the last one. :)

    And no beef with the yaoi fairy.

    Pluses all around. :)

    And what does “ovulating” look like? Do I want to know? :???:

    Anonymous> I knew someone would come back & say that :lol:

    akon> My only “good” con was my first con in 2001. It went downhill after that XD

    Sabrina> The closest to the yaoi that I saw was that American gay comic called “Cavalcade of Boys” :lol:

    DS> I guess if you weren’t really into TMR then yea going would have been pointless.

    Scheris> I didn’t want her to come back & later spam his phone!!

    Scott> Aha do you remember the on screen pic of someone’s photobook where he crossdressed? I thought it was a woman at first @_@/

    Kona> It was actually pretty boring most of the time XD; The concert was the only reason I came haha

    @Hinano,

    Even if the girl does spam his phone, i’m sure you can easily, ahem, “discourage” her by answering and going all Hinano-sama on her just once. :twisted:

    Ascaloth> Haha I suppose I could have done that :twisted:
