The Positives & Negatives of Open Comments.

Published by Hinano at 10:41 pm under Rants & Raves

It’s been a while since I did a real rant & rave post so here I go for old time’s sake. I was just thinking what my fellow comrad does on his blog and flames everyone while shutting comments off so no one can flame him back. While I really don’t care to flame people or bloggers, as most of you know I often flame a poorly animated show that strays from the manga or doesn’t follow it. Similarly, when I do manga reviews I often post scanlations that I do on my own and not ones that I got off some website. Despite all this, you still get idiots who come here (most likely via google) and then comment and attempt to flame me on a post that’s over months old. What do I have to do to get it through their thick skulls that my blog is a) not your PMS rant forum b) not an anime summary database c) is biased towards my opinion. Is it even possible?

The biggest culprits of this garbage are all the stupid kiddy shows that I regretfully blog/have blogged. When I go to my google analytics, majority of my searches come through Kamichama Karin, Mamotte Lollipop and Shugo Chara. While I enjoy discussing episodes and laughing at crap animation with regulars here on this blog, I always have to deal with spam comments in those posts (that I often delete) who are always asking me where can they get manga scans, where can they download the episode or quite recently “stop making fun of the anime”.

I mean it’s not like I make fun of the anime for no reason. Look at the animation. How can you NOT make fun of this crap? It really amazes me how they try to like give me some kind of reasonable argument of why I’m wrong and why the anime is the most awesome thing to be pooped out of Satellite’s butt. Then there’s Shugo Chara. I dunno if they like got together recently or 4chan is just bored but I’m getting a number of “IF YOU HATE THE FILLERS STOP WATCHING IT” blah blah blah. Well I do hate the fillers and I don’t watch them, in fact I skip them and I pretty much only watch the actual story episodes now.

So basically you get this ignorance that you have to constantly delete out of the spam que on a daily basis. I kinda sit back and wonder like “what exactly do they get out of posting this crap?” Like do they feel their stupidity will somehow affect my blogging and suddenly change my heart and make me love fillers? Or do they feel that everyone has to agree with them on everything. Or am I just trying to figure out a bunch of idiotic immature teenagers who are probably pissed off that their mom grounded them so they go take their anger out on the first google result for Shugo Chara.

I’ve recently thought of quitting to blog Shugo Chara and only follow the manga. I mean the anime is filler free but most of us manga readers already know what happens so aside from “oh hey a new OP/ED” there’s not been much to discuss. So the people with the brain will stay quiet, then you’ll have some pre-teen brat find my posts on google and continue spamming me with “where can I download/stop making fun of my favoritist anime in the world *girlfapfapfap*!!”

I’d hate to disable comments because one of the reasons I blog certain shows is to get a discussion going with my readers and talk about the good and the bad. Then you get these morons who come by and leave their poop, like the pigeon who left some on my window which I can’t wash off because I’m on the 10th floor of a high rise apartment building whose windows won’t open more than 3 inches. I often leave the comments there for amusement’s sake, cause then some other turd will come by and the thread will grow a life of its own  But lately it’s like increasing in numbers. I can only imagine the horrors of moderation I’ll have to deal with once summer vacation hits.

It sucks that this only happens on those 3 categories too. Like I don’t have some random guy coming by and complaining that I totally flamed the Saikano movie 2 years ago. :P

If you decide to blog Junjou Romantica, then you might get a considerable amount of these kind of comments.

Although I delete “TORRENTPLS!!!” comments also, I leave the flames. I find they often add to the discussion and give other readers an idea of what people enjoy the show.

Also, the comment thread on JP’s post is epic.

Yeah! You finally posted a rant.
Anyway, this is the reason why I sometimes hate being a teenager who like anime, manga, j-dramas, j-rock, etc, because for some reason other teenagers, and older fans as well, decide that the things they like are best there is, and if you dare say something bad about it you are an idiot.
I remember when this girl who called me a bitch and started saying racist comments against me just because I said I didn’t like yaoi. That really ruined the forum for me.

Taiyaki> That is really what’s been plaguing me whether or not to blog it, as opposed to the fact that it’s about man buttsecks.

Kabitzin> Yes we had a good 10 minutes looking at it again and laughing

Scheris> Holy crap really? LOL sounds like the yaoi fairy experience I had at the anime next forums

You could try putting up a captcha that asks the commenter to solve a calculus problem. That should filter out most of the kiddies. :)

I generally delete “where do i download this pls” comments unless I’m really in a bad mood and I flame them while quoting the posting rules which are, you know, right above the name you enter. But we really get very few of those anyways.

However, there are a couple of like 1-2 year old posts (tagged Naruto fanart, or lolicon, or something that pops up on Google with a high page-ranked site like THAT) that occasionally get random necro comments like that. We generally ignore them. Maybe it’s different because on a team blog you really only scrutinize comments on your own posts, and if it’s some random comment on a 1 year old post of a writer who is no longer there you tend to just ignore it. Perhaps that’s more of a problem with a one person blog.

As for pure flames on currently blogged shows, I think the problematic posters get quietly dealt with by Impz the Hammer. On my own posts it depends on my mood: 1) ignore, 2) flame back, or 3) delete.

I wouldn’t want to take off comments though, despite the issues you mentioned your blog is quite comment driven and I think you’d miss out on good discussion. Although I don’t follow your Shugo Chara entries since I don’t care for the series so I may be talking out of my ass as usual.

  10. KonaNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 14 Apr 2008 at 11:32 pm

A question about something on the blog or about the blog would work too. Most people who google to rant wont spend more than a minute trying to figure out a question or if they are denied they’ll scram.

Btw: Gratz on almost getting married. I just noticed the little countdown. I usually just stop loading the page once I load most of it and its bugging my internet.

    “4chan is just bored”

Not since Code Geass started again, funny is that Shugo Chara is somewhat well received over there.

I think you are getting those comments from the same type of people that … how can I put this … like too much some shows, it the reason I no longer bother reading the comments section of “Random Curiosity”.

Calawain> You’re right, I do get good comments in my SC posts…but only by the intelligent people who comment within 2-3 days of my post…rather than random retards who find the post like 5 months later lol

    Drakron> Haha I never read comments of RC, there’s way too many and a lot of them are by people I don’t know anyway. At least on most other blogs most others who comment I actually know. ^^;

    Kona> Does the countdown cause any problems for you when you load the page? I haven’t heard anyone mention any page loading problems but maybe they don’t wanna be mean since it’s a wedding countdown XD;;

  15. ShiningNinjaNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 14 Apr 2008 at 11:42 pm

    Lulz.

I noticed a while ago you reprimanding another member for the above reasons D:

As much as I love Shugo Chara, the majority of the fanbase are these weaboos that constantly ask for the next episode less than five minutes after watching the one that was just uploaded on Youtube or something ==; .. and the Chapters are worse. They seem to think that the anime and manga hatch daily or something. The SC! forum I go to is pretty safe, not much fire going on, but a more popular site like Crunchyroll…. its just unbearable ==; not to mention unauthorized distribution of scans

As for the fillers…. I mostly fast forward them, looking for any juicy Amuto moments that might be there  .. but I enjoy reading your rants on how cruddy they are 8D;;…. as of this moment, I can’t remember any filler besides the emo ikuto date one ==; they are that forgettable… but even though the manga-adapted ones are well, in anime form, we also have things like bad animation and anime-original stuff in there that dilutes the whole episode.

heck, I LOVE YOUR BLOG *____*

your posts of Vampire boobs and butts were awesome, and you weren’t afraid to talk about your thoughts on Da Capo and all the yoshiyuki crudd. I found them extremely fun and easy to read

    *cough*

But yeah. I once thought that there was a limit to stupidity in someone’s comment =P

  16. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 14 Apr 2008 at 11:47 pm

totali> I’m sorry for making you cry :( *gives you a hug* lol

Scheris> Haha show him that Shino’s Paachi fanfic I commented about above. I still bust out laughing everytime I read it

ShiningNinja> Yes that member was a contributor to the stupidity :P I actually avoid forums like the plague. The only “forums” I visit are ones where they post downloads for manga chapters and I don’t comment I just leech. Sometimes I visit the Narutofan forums but mostly to see a thread someone photoshopped a page of someone’s head or something. XD

The sad part is I don’t get flames on Da Crapo or Rosario + Panties because most of those are read by guys who are less likely to start immature brat flame wars (unless they’re purposely trolling - which I don’t really get too much of)

  17. ShiningNinjaNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 14 Apr 2008 at 11:51 pm

I do enjoy your blog and the reader participation is a feature that I also really enjoy so I do hope that you don’t disable comments.

why not have reader moderation like youtube does with its comments giving readers the ability to “rank” or mark as spam certain comments?

  23. CrusaderNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 15 Apr 2008 at 12:42 am

The best thing about having a team blog is that you can place a face on the dark underhand of the ban hammer. It helps not to have any scruples about being evil for the sake of being evil. I find the offenders and put the death warrants into mein trap’s inbox, he then unwittingly signs them and I carry out the dirty work…

My theory is that it takes many key strokes to flame, it takes one click to delete. In terms of economy of force the blogger has the advantage, all that is required is the will to exploit it. If you can’t bring yourself to do it then draft some evil dude to do it for you, I am sure jp can fill in in a pinch as he probably doesn’t care.

What do I have to do to get it through their thick skulls that my blog is a) not your PMS rant forum b) not an anime summary database c) is biased towards my opinion. Is it even possible?

Their thick skulls extend from one ear to the other, an approximation of about 20 to 30cm of pure bone matrix, leaving no cavity inside it for neuronal structures except for basic pontine and midbrain structures essential for normal biological functions such as respiration and cardiovascular control as well as autonomic mastrubatory functions.

So… short of ending their miserable existances, the answer to your question is… no. >_>

At least Satelight didn’t go and animate the night where we were in kamika and had a little accident that resulted in Suz… err… nevermind. >_>

For the little kiddies’ info, Koge draws only only cute, but borderline piido-loli cute. Just look at Dejiko in some of her outfits. I mean how many of you would dress your daughters/sisters like that in realit… oh wait… I’m talking to the wrong audience here. >_>

Hinano has a pointy point. The Rosario + Pantsu / Kanopron / TitsRaburu topics don’t go flame on. However, I suspect that the ultimate flaming flambe post will be if anyone disses Hahiru/Lucky Aids. I can see it now… Continents on fire. Cities reduced to dust. The boiling seas. Etc2

    - Five good minutes later of thinking -
I suspect that why you get those flames is that there are few people who blog those three shows. Therefore, on a search you are likely to come out near the top. The other panty shows many people blog and the flames will tend to be more diluted across the board and in essence you are less likely to be near the top of search results. And then if the flames appear, they are more likely to be concentrated on the more “frequently haunted by rabid and mindless fanbois” blogs, eg. like the -searches current stats- 350+ posts on why suzaku must die on some -name witheld- place. That is my theory. Actually, your google analytics have proven my l33t theory.

On a lighter note, I would be interested to see how many of the regulars here are shotas/lolis apart from our resident shota. I’m pretty sure from how long I’ve seen arima around the scene that I will be her jiji/baba and that most of the regulars would be our shotas/lolis. :P And no, I’ve never said I was male/female/trap/reverse trap/bigender. Ever. Names are misleading. Anonymous “What is your age” poll next?

    -edit-
Damn you people! stop making me edit my posts after you have posted something new! It takes 30 good minutes to make a good rant like this! :P

Kabitzin> You send people to “prematurely terminate their existance”, failing which you pray for divine intervention. Failing all that, the delete key works.

  28. CrusaderNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 15 Apr 2008 at 1:08 am

    @Kabitzin
Then the flamer is wasting a hot key in another demonstration of their stupidity. It took many more key strokes to write said flame in the first place. Besides it takes just about as much effort to mark them off as spam…

I understand that some people live outside of the boundaries of reality, and if they have an Internet connection; they are headed into the lives of anyone they can affect.

Your blog is just that: Your blog! You set the tone and others have a right to or not to read it. Unless you just can’t help it, it’s better to just delete them. After a few deletions they will not come back. They’ll find someone else to play with or annoy.

then now, our Hanakimi JDrama annoouncement post is becoming a battleground for the pro-Hanakimi TW and pro-Hanakimi JDrama faction rofl.

perhaps you can use the plugin which disables commenting after a certain time has elapsed since the post was published? to lessen the flames, at the very least :) if things get any more out of hand, I think I’ll opt to use that plugin too.

So far week 3 spring 2008 is going quite well. Watching nothing, just skiming the series commentaries is so much fun and leaving so much time. In fact, so good that I’m not worrying about catching up on anything when I get back from this working holiday. :3

Surprisingly, I’m the only one to say it, but I think all of the rage against the flamers is exaggerated. They’re kids, they’re not necessity stupid, just childish. Is it really worth your anger, or make you any better than them, if you flame them back?
Would be more simple to just ignore them, let them think whatever they want?

  47. DrakronNo Gravatar PORTUGALon 15 Apr 2008 at 2:19 pm

Jaalin seem to completely vanished, I take it was real life issues since he also commented on another blog (anime on my mind) and he also stop commenting there.

And if you are trying to pick on what happen to Jaalin in RC … let say this, it was clear that he did not liked Harem series and that shown in his summary, some people do and so had no issues in pointing out on the comments area why they disagreed with Jaalin comments, I was one of those people because I understand and accept Harem mechanics for what they area and even enjoy then.

As for the “bullying” comment … sorry but that is a fact of life, I am getting tired of people trying to impose a nanny state in the Internet since that leads to ANY criticism being taken as “being mean”, that lead to people creating pure crap (just look at Deviant Art) and NOT being called on it … sometimes you have to understand your talents on that area are … none.

  48. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 15 Apr 2008 at 3:04 pm

I think the point of my post is not that I’m being bullied but more like I gotta be a comment babysitter. Trolls/bullying/whatever you call it doesn’t bother me, sometimes it’s pretty funny actually. It’s more of the fact that you KNOW the person commenting is a complete and honest idiot who doesn’t read/doesn’t have the maturity or brains to understand the difference between a blog and myspace.

I don’t know how you manage Hinano….I’m the least patient person when it comes to these things.

akon> I spent like 5 years on IRC< I guess I’m jaded to spammers

Hey, Hinano. Why don’t you try to start a flame post yourself — Conan-O’brien-hates-my-homeland style — except it’ll be Hinano hates my blog.

  54. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 15 Apr 2008 at 9:08 pm

But I only flame animu not blogs ;P
    Actually I’m working on the stupid hierarchy chart for my visual novel right now so no time ><;

  55. bakanekoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 15 Apr 2008 at 9:34 pm

Oh, how is that going? I checked the game engine out. Seems like simple enough to use yet complex enough to create mini-games.

Hmm. This was a post about flame, and it seems like we’ve changed topic. Maybe I should start flaming just to bring this post back on track. kekeke…

  56. StarryprincessNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 15 Apr 2008 at 9:36 pm

When you have a blog like this whith lots of people it turns out something like YouTube. have you SEEN how much flaming they have?

just one of the curses of being popular XD But then again its totaly worth it XD

  57. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 15 Apr 2008 at 10:20 pm

bakaneko> I looked at the script myself it seems fairly easy. I think the most complex thing for me will be the feature where you have to hit a certain scene to be able to unlock others, rather than following a linear jump pattern. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure it out otherwise I’ll bug either you or the people on the forums.

Starry> Sadly yes, but after my youtube account got deleted I didn’t bother recreating another one. At least on dailymotion if someone flames me, it’s in French and I don’t know what they’re saying.

drakron> no i disargee as for example, on RC that was just crude. If they kept the bile to his description of the episode then thats fair to an extent, but to have his summaries trashed when its your own opinion is bad just because it went against the zelaots opinion plus the bile went on into other animes he was covering.

Internet bullying is worse than reality cos its faceless and gutless. If either talented or talentless, say it constructively. Problem is that there’s a comfort zone of hiding behind a monitor so people can say things like that. Plus most things like anime and blogs are free access so people get arrongant and forget that someone using their own time to do this.

Must admit I did giggle at the ‘fact of life’ comment cos you make it sound like only the strong and talented can survive on the net.

  60. DrakronNo Gravatar PORTUGALon 16 Apr 2008 at 2:47 pm

No, it means you have to develop some degree of a thick skin … point is the moment you make your opinions public you have to deal with the public.

The public does not exist to worship, to make “constructive criticism” or anything that the author does not want to deal with, the public is what it is and either you deal with it or you do not.

And you can giggle but why do you think the net as a social construct would be any different that the real world social construct? the strong and talented will be at the top as the rest will be … not.

oh… well…. IMO, everything regarding the internet(s) (ask my buddy in the p@le h0us3 if u don’t believe me! ) is d@mn complicated. It might be a social construct, but it’s no rules or whatsoever, anyone can be powerful in these lands of pixels n l33tn3s5 (yeah, h4cks n n33ts r the gods of the internets)… Also, not only the “talented” and “strong” ppl wins, there r exceptions, for example: well…. u know… someone whose name begins with GEORGIA n end with AMBUSH…
@Hinano: Hi Hinano, I’m a n00b and I was wondering if the v1sual novel will be freeware, . n, don’t worry about flames coz when u play with fire, sometimes u can get a nice suntan

*sighs* dang that was a long way to scroll down…but anyway

Every one has their own right to have an opinion but some are just dumb with sharing them..Every one has their moments when they doo it its just some more than others show them XD

I reallly cant blame you for feeling this way and some people just dont understand the rants at all or are not mature enough to see it from anothers stand point or veiw…

I think aviod the spamming people and loli/shotas who “rant” at your ranting XD and just dont doo the anime and cover the manga.

Besides its less work on you right? And covering the manga will just make up for the time you didnt use to cover the anime thats lamer than the actual story anyway (good example Manga: Rosario + Vampire Anime: A.K.A Rosario no Pantsu)

And i agree with that person up there^ with the suntan part

Not sure if you’ve already found the example in the documentation, but here it is: http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/doc/reference/The_Ren%27Py_Language#Menu_Statement

We can discuss it more if you want to, but perhaps you like to start a dedicated post for the discussion instead of continuing to pollute this post. :)

That’s the problem with blogging Shounen or Shoujo anime. Its quite difficult to blog insightfully Shounen anime unless you’re writing a summary or Seiyuu analysis.

I guess that’s the problem with female bloggers who do have an interest in quite a bit of Shoujo anime. Male bloggers with their moe-bishoujo crap are thankfully left out of this retardedness :)
