Last Friends - 01 (DO NOT WANT)

Published by Hinano at 8:54 pm under First Impressions, ■Drama/Live Action■

So while on the way to NJ today I decide to watch Last Friends, the drama I talked about in my jdrama spring preview. Holy shit is this drama fucked up. Basically take a bunch of fucked up 20 year olds, and put them in a house together and you get Real World Japan. The main heroine is played by the girl who played Rei in Proposal Daisakusen. So seeing her role go from a studios college girl to a poor abused one was really heartbreaking.

So anyway, Michiru (the girl) lives with her crackwhore mom who has a guy over every night. That guy is a lolipedobear and often tries hitting on Michiru as well. Michiru works in a beauty salon but everyone at work bullies her. They threaten to do shit to her if she “takes away their customers” and this one bitch steps on her foot with her heel and then pours boiling hot water on her hands. On her birthday, Michiru’s boyfriend asks if she wants to come live with him.

Michiru is unsure at first and then talks to her mom about it. Her mom doesn’t seem to give a flying shit so the next weekend she moves with her boyfriend. Everything seems really great, she even goes to buy house related items such as matching mugs and a new lamp. Her boyfriend realizes that she’s being bullied at work but she says she likes her job and it’s no big deal as long as she can come home to a happy life. Or so she thought.

The next morning, she finds her boyfriend going through her cell phone and looking at text messages of hers. One of those messages is a message from her best friend from high school Ruka who she met near a train station the day before. I don’t know what the fuck gets into this guy’s head but he thinks Ruka is a guy and demands proof otherwise. Michiru tells him she’ll get a photo album from her house with high school pictures. When she goes home to look for it she doesn’t find it but while she’s looking her boyfriend calls again…

He demands to know why she didn’t pick up the phone the first time and then says that she’s with another man. She tells him she was looking for the album just as he told her to but all he says is for her to immediately come home. She runs home and is soaking wet from the rain and when she gets home what does she get? She gets the crap beaten out of her by that son of a bitch and then after he punches & kicks her multiple times he hugs her and says I’m sorry. Listen you stupid fuck you think sorry is gonna cut it? I’d take that fucking lamp he broke and shove it right through his tiny nutsack.

So the poor girl leaves his apartment and tries to go back to her mom’s house..she sees her mom through the window with that lolipedobear boyfriend and turns around and goes to a park. She sits in the rain and tries to call Ruka. Ruka doesn’t pick up but then checks her phone and sees that Michiru called. She finds Michiru and takes her back to her house where she is sharing it with another girl. Michiru has a lot of fun with Ruka, her room mate and this guy friend of the room mate. She asks if she can stay for the night and of course they let her.

The next morning while she’s sleeping, Ruka comes over and kisses her. Ok so I guess Michiru isn’t cheating on her boyfriend with a man, she’s just doing with a WOman. In regards to Ruka, she’s just a dyke on a bike (no really, her career in life is to do those motorbike races lol). The OP theme of the show is Utada Hikaru’s “Prisoner of Love” which btw is the most emo opening I’ve ever seen. Honestly I can’t keep up with a drama like this. Every week I’m gonna get pissed off at whoever abuses Michiru.

Oh by the way I forgot to mention, this drama is like a “flashback” and it begins showing Michiru living alone and pregnant. I don’t know who impregnated her but I don’t wanna stick around to find out. To add some irony, Michiru’s boyfriend works as one of those child abuse advocates who goes to family’s homes to talk to children and make sure they aren’t being abused.. HARRRR. Also Michiru mentions in “present time” that basically it’s her fault that Ruka died…yea I really hate watching a drama knowing that a character is doomed to die at the end. Please unless you like seeing incredibly miserable people, stay away from this drama. I had enough of depressing crap after 1 liter of tears.

wow abuse and girls kissing. just wow. o___o

I don’t mind so much the misery as long as it feels genuine. 1 litre of tears was that. This, on the other hand, I don’t know. The bad guys are just too bad, and the good guys are just too good. Maybe later flashbacks will give more dimensions to the characters. We’ll see…

Wow, the first episode seems to have more drama in it than many shoujo animes have in an entire series  . I wonder how they will be able to top this emo-fest in the following episodes :?:

  7. Hinano UNITED STATESon 12 Apr 2008 at 10:16 pm

orbitz> I’d imagine that they’ll just add rape & murder (since Ruka dies and Michiru gets pregnant) and whatever other abuse they can think of

Oh god, just reading this made me miserable and mad.
Bastard, beating the crap out of her and then apologizing, at least he didn’t blame her for making him do that. Tch, he deserves to have his equipment cut off with a rusty knife and then pour some lemon juice on the wound.
This is to emo for me to watch.

  10. Hinano UNITED STATESon 13 Apr 2008 at 10:58 am

ohphive> Was it? I coulda sworn she was looking at Ruka saying “I was taken away from you a 2nd time…maybe this death could have been avoided” ? Well if he dies that’s a good thing!

….. wow. i was going to watch this. unique premises. would it make more sense if ruka was maybe a guy dressed as a girl? =O i seriously remember reading somewhere that there was like another 2 personalities that was supposed to pop up and live together and they become happy happy. i really thought it was goign to be happy happy dispite the abusive boyfriend who i thought was goign to die off after the first episode or something. masami nagasawa is too happy a person to see being abused O_O”

if its worse than 1 litre of tears i might as well go jump of a roof O_O” ironic. in the first 2 minutes of 1 litre of tears i was crying. literally. by episode 3 my eyes looked like i hit a wall straight on or someone punched both eyes simultaneously. i stopped at episode 4 becuase at school my friend only start TALKING about episode 5, and 2 minutes into it, i was crying like mad in class with snot and all O_O”

Figured it was gonna be an emo-crapfest, but since I mistakenly thought that about Ashita no Kita Yoshio last season only to find it was funny and had some mystery to it… I decided to at least check out some trusted reviews to know for sure.

It actually sounds worse than what I was expecting.

Wow I really loved this first ep. It’s not really that depressing, and is in no way fucked up. Violent boyfriends (and husbands) do exist, and so do gay people. It’s not “fucked up”, it’s life. Life is not a shoujo, so yeah, a really good and touching ep. I’m totally wanting to see the next ones (and by the way, I liked everyone’s acting, including ryo-chan).
    Watch it, minna-san!!!!!!

I hope Ruka, nor Takeru WON’T die…. I love their characters. It would be sad if Eri dies too… I wish Sosuke will die… I bet that child Michiru has now is Sosuke’s…

I’ve been wondering about the “death that could have been avoided”….of course the visual and text make you think its Ruka, and that would seem logical, but the “present time” narrators are Michiru, Takeru, and Ruka, which would seem to indicate that they are all around to comment on the past…..? It is basically like watching a train wreck, but somehow I’ve found myself signing up for more abuse (oops, no pun intended….) with the next episodes….

  20. [...] beginning to understand Hinano’s frustration that led her to not want to watch this show. Ruka and everyone in Share House tried so hard to pull [...]

This drama kind of reminds me of something off of lifetime movie network…but with asians…better acting…and characters that you just want to hug.

Seriously, by the seventh episode (which is the one I’ve just finished) I’m feeling rather sad for Sousuke. It’s not just because he’s played by Ryo Nishikido, or because he has a nice smile. His character seems real. Unbalanced, but real. I’m not condoning his actions, but this guy isn’t just a psycho for no reason. That is, he’s got issues, but there are reasons for those issues.

Ueno Juri is an amazing actress. Her character in Nodame Cantabile (a fun, semi-girly, cutesy musical prodigy otaku) is completely different from the girl she plays here. Even if I did not like the premises, I would probably still watch this just for Ueno Juri’s amazing acting skills.

Masami. At first, I had to think, ‘Wow, is this girl weak.’ She takes all this crap, and it seems like she’ll never get out. But she’s strong. Her character is very different from the one from Proposal Daisakusen, but she is still incredibly three dimensional.

And there are other characters, each deserving of their own paragraph …but they’re all so very different. And although it sounds cliche, they are also so very alike.

This drama is sad, but it has yet to make me cry. (…I only cried in the last two episodes of 1 Litre of Tears, but teared up many a time in the episodes preceding those). Just try it out.

Ok, so I have to say, there is some good twists in this drama, plus it is actually showing shit that happens in real life that you never see.
    I loved this show.

And if you think Ruka dies, you have another thing coming, I suggest watching this to anyone who likes a lot of shojo shows.
