Manga Review: Karin Vol. 14 (Finale)

Published by Hinano at 10:42 pm under Manga

And so after 5 years the Karin manga comes to a close. While it was actually a shounen (seinen maybe?) manga, the ending made it feel like a shoujo one to me lol. Whatever though, it was satisfying and it brought me to tears so I give it a 5 star rating and recommend everyone check it out. (Although with the English version being called Chibi Vampire I’m recommending the Japanese one or a scanlation if possible. )

Anyway the plot leaves off at volume 13 where Karin was being captured by Bridget and vampire buddies along with Tachibana and her uncle.

So since they figure Karin is gonna die, they wanna impregnate her so she has another zouketsuki baby that will continue the tradition of giving blood to vampires who need it. Karin overhears this and goes in a state of panic and tears (and who’d blame her?)

Tachibana tells Karin that at first she hated her because her relationship with Kenta is the same way that her parents were…and when you have half human half zouketsuki babies you get unhealthy kids like her. But she felt really awful for what Bridget’s family is doing to her and so she decided to help her escape.

Eventually after being guided by a Karin lookalike ghost “Sofia” Kenta finds Karin. Before Bridget can have a tear at him again, her rother Ren is there as well and manages to restrain her back. That’s right you keep that bitch in line!

So then a bunch of fighting happens, Karin & Kenta escape. Tachibana decides to protect her uncle from the sunrise and in the meantime Karin’s grandma protects Henry with a bat shield from the sun. Also during this time Kenta calls Karin by her first name for the first time so she tries to do the same and calls him “Kenta-kun” and then they kiss :) :)

So eventually everyone is reunited but Ren comes back with a Bridget clinging on to him. Yea we know what happened up in that room…

..see?

Anyway time passes, Maki tries to cockblock but fails. Karin & Kenta graduate from high school and everything’s all spiffy…but the one thing that’s changed is since that incident, Karin has not had to “give blood” to anyone. Her zouketsuki things stopped and so he family had to make a decision.

The decision was that they wiped her memory of her family and sent her off to live with Kenta in the human world since she was pretty much an independent adult now, working full time at that diner.

The following day Karin had been placed to live in an apartment as if she has always lived there. Kenta is given keys to it and he stops by one morning surprising her but then she thinks that it’s like a normal occurrence. He then asks her about her “family” but all she can say is “I don’t have one” but despite this she begins to cry without knowing why.

Kenta is so overcome with emotion and the promise he made to her family to “make her happy” that he immediately proposes!

So…20 years later, Karin & Kenta have a daughter named Kanon. One morning as she runs to school she passes by Anju who is now an adult vampire. This scene brought me to tears :(

A bonus image by the mangaka of Kenta & Karin in wedding attire.

At the end are a couple bonus pages which show Kenta, Karin & Kanon living together. Kanon has a father complex because she is the reincarnation of Sofia - that Karin lookalike who guided Kenta to Karin. She made a “promise” with him that she’d come back as his baby so she can “love him” again. Ooh boy. Poor Karin

Anyway really cute romance manga  Definitely check it out if you have the chance - and don’t bother with JC Staff’s poo, all they did was show boobs and nosebleeding for 24 episodes.

My bro was crazy for the Karin anime, and it sort of put me off with all the gigantic GOOGLY WOOGLIES (at that time, I tried to avoid fanservice shows, but now i’m all for LOVE POWER!!!) but if you say the mangas Bitchin’, I’ll have to check it out (but mostly because of the…*ahem* BAZOINKAS! XD)

(and funny that I mentioned Karin in a recent comment and I see this post pop up! I AM JESUS!!!)

I can’t wait for a certain manga publisher to catchup with the Japanese releases now… since it looks like they ended this on a good note, without dragging things along as much as SOME manga I could name (cough-Naruto-hack). And, even with the drama, they don’t lose sight of the comedy - which is THE big mistake most comedies make, and so end up diluted into mediocrity because they can’t remember what made them good in the first place by trying to introduce out-of-place elements into a story.

Kinda surprised by how Karin ended up, though.. but maybe we can blame it on the other vampires and their plans for her. It’s also nice to have gotten one more shot of Anju, though… but I will miss Karin’s family. That, and I miss Kenta’s mother.

Yup, I’m definitely no Stripey, that’s for certain.

Papa-kon! Daughter rapes daddy. Mommy is happy for them all :3
I can see it all. Chibi-vampire!

Definitely a far better conclusion to the anime adaptation. Though some authors might have opted for a slightly darker ending, I’m glad that in these series anyway even the vampires get happy endings. Poor Ren though, but I guess he had it coming being an ero-kyuketsuki after all. :)

I hadn’t read this in a while. I did read it when the anime was going on, but kind of got annoyed by the end of the anime and sick of the story so I just got out of the habit of reading it. I really need to pick up the rest. Sounds like it gets really great. I’m sucker for marriage.

aw, what a cute ending.it was kinda nice to see a grown-up Anju. i wonder what happen to the Karin’s family. They probably still the same in twenty years.too bad Karin don’t remember them.

For some reason, adult Karin and Kanon reminds me of Akiko-san and Nayuki, especially with their hair bangs at the top. I guessed it must have been after hearing Kanon’s name…

OMG they need to make an anime sequel now…..because I’m way too lazy to pick up manga.

Yaay~~~ I was waiting for this post.

I read the conclusion awhile back when I got my Dragon AGE in the mail, and I quite liked it.

But… some things quite confused when I read it:

What was the point of Sophia again, other than residing in Karin’s blood and suffering a thousand years (and the other things she said)?
Damn, her backstory is just confusing as all hell.
It just wasn’t quite explained enough, I think.

Also, did you know Yuna Kagesaki is making two more specials for Karin?
    Says so on her blog:

    http://blog.livedoor.jp/kagesaki33/archives/2008-03.html

Best bet on getting the specials is using a P2P program like Share, because that’s the only place I can find Dragon AGE magazine scans of this manga.

I’ll definitely check out Karin one day (if you know what I mean  ).

    matrix> thanks for the heads up, although winny & share haven’t worked for me in a bazillion years so most likely I won’t get a chance to view it ^^;

Great, I have an issue with the artwork again. Maybe I should set my standard lower … I’m expecting way too much … But I love vampire stories and if I ever see this in Borders (it’s not fair, Australia hardly gets any new anime/manga stuff. We all just have to “download” them or read about how cool they are from bloggers elsewhere) I’m gonna read through volume 1 first.

  16. Haesslich CANADAon 12 Apr 2008 at 8:40 pm

blissmo: It’s basically a shounen manga… not high art. Besides, the comedy’s what drives the manga, not the art… which means what there is happens to be perfectly serviceable.

I guess all of us are suckers for happy endings. ;)
