H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ 12 (Finale)

Published by Hinano at 7:06 pm under H2O -Footprints in the Sand-

I honestly didn’t want to blog anything that aired while I was at the con but since a few shows have ended it would be kinda dumb not to blog the last episode ^^; Well I took a 2 hour nap and got my sugar from that chocolate Easter bunny so I should be all set to hammer out some posts. So anyway I kinda like the ending, it was not too predictable but still ended the series leaving a smile on my face.

So basically the reason Hirose yelled out Hayami’s name as his “mother” was because he mentally returned to the time where he was a little kid and his mom was alive. For some reason he replaced his mom with Hayami and hence why he stood up against the old man. Luckily Hinata grew some cojones and called the cops and the nasty old geezer was sent to jail. Justice prevails!!

After this since Hirose was still in his disillusioned state, Hayami took him back to Tokyo to live in their old apartment as his “mother”. A few weeks passed and Hayami would send letters letting everyone know of Hirose’s status. At one point Hirose had a dream that about “Hayami” and how he had a crush on her. This made Hayami really happy because it meant that she was still in Hirose’s mind and not completely forgotten.

One day they go shopping and they approach a train crossing. Hayami sees some shota run after a ball right when a train is about to approach. She tells Hirose that his mother has not left him etc and she runs into the incoming train (to save the shota? I really don’t know why she did that.) In any case this basically snapped something in Hirose’s mind and he was like NOOO HAYAMI HOLY SHIT I’M SO DUMB. So yea Hayami basically dies, credits roll. I’m guessing she did this to remind Hirose that his mom saved him rather than killed herself.

A few years later when everyone is an adult we see their grown up selves. Hotaru has taken over her old geezer’s place thank god. Hamaji is still a trap and his sister is ashamed xD;; Hirose also apparently can see again or something and while he’s building a giant windmill a loli Otoha runs up to him and glomps him. She tells him that she begged the fairies a lot and that he should “protect her” this time around. She runs off and soon enough Hirose realizes that “her” is Hayami, who has come back from the dead lol. Although she still looks the same as she did as a teenager  Ah well it was a cute ending, glad I stuck with this series ^_^.

Sweet ending. But loli Otoha seems a little random for some odd reason.o_O

I feel it’s no coincidence that my cold got a bit better as this series ended

  3. Gravmech PHILIPPINESon 23 Mar 2008 at 7:45 pm

How can you not mention Hamaji having a kid!? That was about as big a shock as Hayami dying and then getting resurrected!

    And go loli Otohaaaaa!?

Gravmech> Holy crap that was Hamaji’s baby? XDDD It didn’t process in my head when I watched lol!

    WTF!?!?!! Sense it makes none!

The most epic part was the fact that the trap knocked up his best friend and is still dressed in meido while being a daddy. This episode made little sense but it was epic and made this series like a 7/10 instead of 5/10 now that I’ve watched them all. Wonderful lulz indeed.

I will note grown-up Hirose looks pretty manly, if a bit thin still.

  7. Hinano UNITED STATESon 23 Mar 2008 at 8:05 pm

Calawain> That’s how he shoulda looked in the first place…rather than a random shota XD

  8. Ren90270 UNITED STATESon 23 Mar 2008 at 8:20 pm

I really how it ended, but I am still kinda confused that Hayami is back from the dead or it’s just her ghostly self just like Hinata (Otoha) when she met Hirose again.

  9. Ren90270 UNITED STATESon 23 Mar 2008 at 11:59 pm

OK, I’ve looked over the train sequence many times and I think there was a flub.

If you noticed that Hayami with the kid was standing on the rail, but it was second set (top part). And when the train passes by, it was crossing on the first set (botton part) closest to Hirose. The key is if you see the slight incline (at the right side of the picture) then the flat area where the tracks are, you’ll see why. The question is if Hayami died there why she was standing on the top part of the rail if the incoming train was crossing on the bottom part of the rail closest to Hirose? :???: (Again, see the slight incline on the right side of the picture b4 the bottom set of tracks)

See that sequence many times and you’ll see the flub there.

I think they really meant for Hayami to die  , if not why go through the black kimono and diary sequence…

  11. Di Gi Kazune MALAYSIAon 24 Mar 2008 at 1:24 am

Hayami is dead. How else would she be so young in the end!

    Mmm… Hamaji x Maki = trap Hamaji Jr. :3 I can see the H now…
Maki: Oh hamaji~~ you are so… good..
    Hamaji: iyaa~~ (heart)

Hirose was never physically blind. Severe psychological trauma can cause the loss of use of a bodypart despite there being no physical injury. It’s a recognised phenomenon. Something to do with brain wiring. That’s why Hirose gained and lost and regained his sight back. The mental trauma knocked sense into him.

Hamaji and Maki were always an item from the start. Even in the game they are always together.

The story is actually quite decent in the end. Kyoto Animation should have done this instead of Lucky AIDS. Then meeibee the bashing would stop.

Hmm… Kazune has the ideal features to pose as Sacchun… Blonde hair, blue eyes.

  12. Gravmech PHILIPPINESon 24 Mar 2008 at 1:57 am

I don’t know, she looks like she has aged properly in the end… :?:

  14. Di Gi Kazune MALAYSIAon 24 Mar 2008 at 4:55 am

Does it matter? Because the baby is going to be brought up as a girl anyway. :P

  15. padfoot135 SINGAPOREon 24 Mar 2008 at 4:58 am

 true… i would love some have a good friend whos juz like hamaji  anyways.. i think that hayami is a human.. not a ghost spirit… and she has grown up -.-” u guys really need to wear spec

ren90270… i went to check and.. YES you are correct… so i think hayami dint die at all….i think she just dissappear so that hirose could get a grip of himself…. and otoha juz properbly find her and boot her to where hirose was  btw i juz notice.. hayami got the da capo I nemu trademark  ring ring!! that little bell on her neck

  18. Oggle MALAYSIAon 26 Mar 2008 at 5:11 am

So in the end, 2 random shota died for them? And Hayami was practically “welcomes” the incoming train to save Hirose from himself? (Talks about self-preservation?). Yes, twisted story indeed. And why in the first things of all, that he not remembered the damn ball that got his mother killed? God!!!!!!! All in all, this is one twisted, illogical, mangled, abused anime storyline I’ve ever watched. Still, watched it BTW.

    nice ending
very nice. I guess you can’t age when you come back to life
    one bit of advise
they should of ended with a kiss after her coming back from the dead thing. overall it was good even without it
the whole “Hayami is gonna die like her mother” thing was so predictable but the epilouge was not and just made my day
oh ya i forgot about the “accept everything” part
can anyone tell me how it goes?
    love this series
    I give it a 7/10
    better than freakin kimikiss

I’m sorry, but I cannot say that this is an anime that I would want to watch again. I wouldn’t have watched it even once if I knew how crappy its ending would have been. The anime’s first 1/3rd of its plot was okay. Characters are introduced, conflicts are decided, the viewer understands most of the story.

Then the middle came, and I started to become skeptical of how this anime’s ending would be. I mean, Hayami suddenly makes up with everyone and now she’s one of the most popular girls? She was called a “Roach” before Hirose came! And now she’s popular?! And Yui just lets it go? Yui ordered her henchmen to BEAT HER UP! Now she accepts Hayami, and Hayami accepts THAT? I don’t understand how this anime’s characters’ humanly limits can go so far for forgiveness. It doesn’t happen in real life. I’m not saying that this anime is for realism, but…the characters have to seem like they have human qualities and faults! Their capacity to forgive and forget is…insane.

Now the last third. This was the most ridiculous in my opinion. The episode where Otoha leaves Hirose after glomping him repeatedly and fighting this big-ass monster in some idiotic alternate dimension, made no F****** SENSE! I didn’t even have enough of a characterization of Otoha to even feel sorry for her leaving! Fine, she’s gone. SCREW HER. -_-;; And then Hirose loses his vision? Fine, I’m okay with that. What I’m not okay with is that he doesn’t accept Hayami’s family killing his mother. He has a mother-complex. WOW. That sucks. But it’s believable, however childish it is. And then he beats up Hayami ‘cuz he thinks SHE killed his mother indirectly? No sense. No clue what was going on, and no idea how Hirose could be so wild and violent to a girl who he loves. -_-;; And then he turns INSANE. WOW. That’s the biggest twist that made me put a finger down my throat. There’s so many damn twists in this anime that it’s just made ridiculous. Then Hayami kills herself so she could make Hirose lose his retardation and turn back to his normal self. What. The. Hell. There was no point in killing herself. Hirose already remembered!

Then the “Epilogue” as some of you are calling it. Um. Okay…Hamaji…turns out to be a father. Weird, shocking, but funny. I accept that part. Yui and Hotaru have great endings. Hotaru turns out to be a normal woman, and Yui’s…become a farmer. o_O; Weird. But acceptable. Then we turn to Hirose…whose voice hasn’t changed at all. His seiyuu’s worst shown in the ending. It sounded like he wasn’t even trying to SOUND older than before. Like…an imitation. Then WTF?! HAYAMI SUDDENLY POPS UP OUTTA NOWHERE?! NOW THAT’S JUST SCREWED UP. She DIED. DIED. When you DIE, you DON’T come back. Unless you believe in certain religions, and I’m pretty sure in this anime that no religion has been mentioned. I’m sure it seems like a miracle…but miracles can be ACHIEVED in real life. People coming back from the dead is NOT a miracle; it’s an impossibility.

My overall score for this anime is a disappointing 3.5/10.
    And in my opinion, I considered Kimikiss ~Pure Rouge~ a way more interesting anime than H2O. Especially since Kimikiss ended with a believable ending. >_>;;

All of this long spiel of blaphemy in the face of H2O fans is all IN MY OPINION. May flame me if you wish. =P

Well, blabla, if you had read the posts above, you wouldn’t have needed to sprain your fingers tiping down all those WOWs and making clear how confused you are about the story…for example, how sure can you really be that hayami died back there? There’s a pretty good explanation by Ren90270 (to which I agree after watching the scene several times) to start with…

So remember, when your head starts hurting just stop watching (nothing personal, just good advice)

Oh, and if you were confused by H2O, then I suggest you don’t even start watching NGE…

  22. PiXar SLOVENIAon 04 May 2008 at 7:32 pm

PS: some probably not so important things i noticed: 1.HIROSE WHY DID YOU PUNCH HER YOU BITCH? ITS NOT HER FAULT >=( (alright that happened a few eps ago…) 2. wow psychopats! they were trying to kill her? 3. what an epic uncle i wish mine was like that… 4. why did hirose lose it back there? that part sucked =( 5 . did she have to die *sob* i know she comes back but she still died so it doesnt quite feel the same…and how did she come back anyway? otoha’s magical wand powers? did she even die? she was on the second railway the train was on the first…6. O.o …what the…hell…d-did hamaji just grow himself some boobs in the end? O.o 7. the story was a little strange…bits and pieces flying everywhere while trying to keep it all together…the first 5 episodes were great then theres the strange “lets all live a happy life together” part where everyone just accepts hayami chan and the retarded magical girl episode(’w'?) and the last few eps were off the hook OK THATS IT IM GONNA FINISH THIS NOW SO HERE GOES: i really liked this anime despite all the wackiness and strange storyline i give it a 10/10 =) about NGE… that was one messed up ending…everyone dies then live again one is an angel or something then they talk the guy goes nuts and calms down after the world is shown out of the blue…watched both movies and i can still hardly understand half of it XP *phew…long comment*

Hayami’s hairstyle in this episode looks so much like Utau Hoshina’s (Shugo Chara) hairstyle. Except it has to be blond.

  24. Zarrastro SPAINon 20 Jun 2008 at 11:10 am

Loved this anime. But, if the train confusion was like it is told above, why did Hayami wait so much time? in fact, why did she even dissapear? If i had been in her same situation and survived, i would not have disappeared. i would have faced the guy an spoke: “You thought i was dead huh? How cute…” or something like that. I do not understand her.
However this is one of the best anime series i’ve ever seen (Despite chapter 8 ¬¬) and i hope japanese studios will continue releasing visual-novel-based anime series, all of them are great.
