Anime Boston Report: Day 0
I’m
calling this day 0 because technically the con begins Friday and this is the pre-con Thursday.
So here is my convention report. I warn you it’s long, very personal, and very insulting to the likes of the people attending. I’m sorry but I just gotta be honest at this point. I think the things that I never noticed before due to “excitement of cons” suddenly appear very visible when my goal is to sell my art rather than enjoy the convention. Anyway read at your own risk, don’ t say I didn’t warn you.
So we got up early and headed towards Chinatown to take the FungWa bus to Boson. I had grandiose plans to watch jdrama and play otome games on my way but that was all thrown out the window the moment I got nauseated on the bus. I unfortunately hadn’t taken any motion sickness medication, and while I’m prone to get sick all the time, I didn’t think this would happen on a bus since I’ve had no problems going to NJ on the same type of trips. Well needless to say I spen the last 3 hours feeling like someone threw me into a washing machine so when we finally stopped at a rest area the first thing I did is run into the convenience store and get those tablets! While I felt greatly relieved after that, I was also knocked out to the point that even the incredibly loud babbling of Cantonese around me didn’t bother me (and normally I need dead silence to fall asleep.)
When we got to Boston, we took a trolley/subway to the hotel. We had trouble finding it first and we were caught a strong gale around the area but after asking someone we found the Mariott (it’s actually really easy except that we went the opposite way lol). We knew we were headed in the right direction the moment we saw a bunch of chunky Bleach cosplayers parading in their stupid outfits despite it being like 40 degrees with strong winds outside. After we checked in our room we decided to go pick up our badges to avoid long lines on Friday.I honestly hope there’s a long line Friday cause we waited in a pretty god damn long line on Thursday…also this was the line from hell. I don’t know if I’m just growing up or what but I felt like everyone around us had ADD. These kids can’t seem to stand still for 5 freaking minutes. Especially these dorks in front of us kept “rough housing” with themselves like they were 4th graders or something.
During the wait the guys behind us started a conversation about Poo Tears which made me lol on the inside. The worst part was a few people in front of us was a group where this one guy acted as if he was on speed. He kept riling up his friends to sing Disney songs featuring such great hits as “I just can’t wait to be king” and “a whole new world” . I think at one point the people in his group were pretending they didn’t know him. I honestly wanted to kick him in the head. Once we passed the long line outside the “registration room” they squished us inside and that’s where you could smell the BO reeking. I bet it was from that guy who looked like he was 9 months pregnant. When I got to pick up my badge I asked what we do in regards to artist alley badges to which the response was “I have no idea”. Luckily the person who checked in JP actally had an idea and told us we’d just pick them up at the artist alley when we got there.
After that I was hungry as all hell so we decided to eat at some place called “Haru” that we saw on our way walking to he hotel. When we got there I could tell by the crowd it was gonna be an expensive place. Yea…we racked up a $70 bill including tip. All we did was get one of those “sushi for 2” plates. It was such a measily plate and they even charged us $5 for the green tea. What place charges for green tea?? The best thing about this place? No idiotic ADD otaku screaming their heads off about how “I FUCKIN LOVE SUSHI” and “I FUCKIN LOVE POCKY!!11” It was nice and quiet, and after that line from hell frankly I was willing to pay an extra few bucks. Needless to say though, we decided wouldn’t be going back to that place for the rest of the weekend. I can settle with cheap stale food court meals to keep me alive until Sunday. When we got back to our hotel I watched those Honey & Clover episodes that were backlogging for the last 2 weeks and continued playing my Otome game (Brothers –koisuru oniisama-).
More on Friday later. (Perhaps after the AMV contest.)

Oh, joy. Now that the hell-queue is over and done with, I hope you have a decent convention.
Oh man, at least You can tolerate those people on the line, I probably couldn’t. Good choice in using Fung Wah lol. Have fun at the con!
As a native Bostonian (or almost), I have to ask: Are you enjoying Boston?
I couldn’t get to AB this year. *cry* This is like the 4th year I’ve missed it.
Whoa, Hinano, I know how you feel that when annoying people (and with BO! of all things) are in front and in the back of the line and you have to take all that in from those “kids”. That’s been a real trooper to stand there for hours, trying to keep everything composed to yourself from guys who act like idiots by making noises, moving around like friggin’ kids.
Yeah, you should’ve kicked one of them while you had the chance.
offtopic… I have no idea if its true, but haerd rumor of 4th Slayers season …digs a shelter from inevitable Dragu slave…
Give them dirty looks!
I really dislike most American anime fans, at least the convention types.
I grew up in San Diego, home of the ComicCon, which is a rediculously huge convention, but does very little anime and manga. I went there several times over the years and I found the people that attended that to be so much more relaxed, odor free, and vastly less irritating. It’s unfortunate that the anime/manga culture here in the states tends to draw such a horrid crowd.
Good luck with your art~
Driving to Boston on Friday, I saw a Fung Wah Bus (there’s always a Fung Wah Bus!).
And when I saw your text message about feeling like you wanted to puke, I had no context for it (I thought it was from Friday morning, not Thursday), so I almost texted back: “OMG, r u expecting an aka-chan dango?” LOL
Always take your Maxolon(tm) prophylactically. It doesn’t hurt.
Start watching Canto-drama. Unfortunately for me, years of exposure during childhood have induced a phobia of the stuff.
- singing - When you wish upon a staaaaaaaaarrrrrr… okay, enough singing. You got your wish. commenting backwards from Day 1 to Day 0 give me the ability of foresight!
OI! Those ARE actually good songs. But Beauty and the Beast is the best. - singing - Can you feel the love tonight? You needn’t look to far~~ Now you make me feel want to dig up those CDs and sing karaoke.
Pocky
is
OVERRATED!
Chocofilled teddys are tastier. Or Chocofilled pandas. People buy pocky here for their kids. Yes, little children. Lolis and Shotas. Timtams are must better. So are Oreos.
Hmm… run out of ideas for epilogue… Hmm… thinking harder…
- think -
- thinking more -
- smoke coming out of ears -
Comicon is more gears towards sensible adults. Emphasis on sensible. Most of the animefreaks grew up as highschool/pre-uni/uni leechers. Obviously, most of them never matured. The ones that mature end up with cynical views like hinano. Especially when we finally are making moolah. But I still do not regret Di Gi Charat! :3 Excessively cute. yet ebil. I think drm0chsr belongs into this cynics catergory but dunno exactly where. At the rate crappy stuff is coming out of japan each season, I keep thinking more and more to give up on this little hobby.
Now to buy shana and kojik… (err… forget that last one) DVDs or not…
PS editing is teh win! Corrected Beauty and the Best >_>
lol i lived in boston like my whole life so during these times i never notice all this and i actually live in a condo in that area
. oh and btw your lucky to just pay 70$ especially since you are eating in the back bay, the average you’d would rack up would be like maybe 120$. hope the rest of your visit goes smoothly! Good luck.
