Rosario + Vampire Manga: A Cockblocking Experience

Published by Hinano at 9:02 pm under Manga

So last night I marathoned the first Rosario + Vampire manga and finished off all 40 chapters. I mean to be honest, it was a pretty good story. The problem was that they would take 1 element, then repeat it for like 10 chapters, and move on to the next “element”. So for example in the first few chapters Moka would get her Rosario removed, kick everyone’s ass, return to normal, harem attacks on Tsukune ensue.

After that Tsukune then proceeded to kick ass after getting Moka’s blood injected into him. After that it was Tsukune breaking the hold on his bracelet and when the grand finale ended, the entire last volume was dedicated to his harem and their pursuits of getting him into the sack. I was hoping they’d somehow resolve Moka & Tsukune’s relationship,

and while they had seemed like they made progress or an attempt to do so, all that was thrown down the toilet:

Sigh. I know it’s a harem manga but in some harem mangas the protagonist DOES eventually settle on one girl and the rest gotta suck it up and be happy for him. The ending was really half assed and it felt as if the author knew in advance that there was going to be a 2nd series so he didn’t really have to give a conclusive ending to the first series.

And you know what, that really sucks. I haven’t read series 2 yet but I hope it actually resolves the loose relationship ends of the first story and stops recycling the same crap over & over again. Although unfortunately my hopes aren’t up.

Err … you know the reason Rosario+Vampire does not “end” is because it changed magazines, R+V II is supposed to the same as R+V …

Kinda like GirlSaurus that also “ends” without ending and becomes GirlSaurus DX without giving any “ending” for the first part…

Also this is not shoujo romance were its normal to have the couple “settling” down even before half way … shounen romances only go down that path near the end (even Love Hina that because very much about Neru at the start only goes into couple territory in the later half) so its unfair to judge it as if its a shoujo romance, this is not Karin or supposed to be Karin.

Drakron> No I had no idea what the reason was but I suspected this because the same thing happened to Trigun which I am also reading now :D

I was thinking along the lines of like Love Hina or even Pretty Face (in an odd sort of way) in which they “sorta” eventually end up together or at least we get a confession or progress of some sort. I didn’t realize that the manga just switched magazines rather than ended and then the author decided to do a sequel.

With that in mind, yes I guess I can now see why it’s too early for them to “settle on 1 woman” even though I think it’s obvious from day 1 who that one is going to be.

I’ve only read through like the early 30s, but yeah it does tend to be a bit repetitive at times. Overall though I think it’s pretty good, I think I enjoyed the parts I read one chapter a week more than the stuff I marathoned at the start :p

gotta agree with you on harem endings, I know it’s all about treating women like semi-humans but for gods sake give them a happy ending. Shuffle! is one of the few I’ve got all the way through and it’s like ‘he made his choice (chose well too) the rest of you fuck off!’.

Also while love hina ended well with the wedding (in manga at least) I hated how whatshisname became cool in the end (if your glasses needed to cover your eyes before, then getting glasses that don’t cover them will only provide perfect vision when you’re looking at peoples feet or their boobs when you trip over them).

  8. DrakronNo Gravatar PORTUGALon 07 Mar 2008 at 1:34 am

Not Shuffle!, it ended terrible … the only good harem ending is Tenchi GxP since … well, back to Shuffle! that gives no closure on the rest (sorry THE HORRIBLE PAST! DORAMA! does not count as anything but a pathetic excuse of NOT doing proper characterization, what they did is a coop out and yes, some was on the game but not at THAT level and some *cough*Kaede*cough* was made up).

Maybe you missed the bit at the end were say they all love him with means nothing changed.

Harem is tough to do properly in anime, only ones that did achieve it was the Tenchi series (and that includes Dual!) as in manga can be easier but its tricky and most either do the “Love Hina” (only loves one as the rest have a snowball chance in hell) and variations of that formula.

But that is the issue, harem is a lot of times a non-choice … you might get a triangle or sometimes a switch (Ataru eventually falling for Lum despite Shinobu being his original interrest) but TRUE harem (more that a triangle AND without a clear winner) is rare, heck even Negima that is getting away with that (since he 10 years old!) is still making a pairing “obvious”.

Wasn’t there decisive closure on shuffle. He chose a girl, he chose the right girl and he chose the one he got along with best then he rejected the rest clearly! Not his fault the bitter harpy’s didn’t give up! heck he moved out to get away from the yandere nutter, frowned at demon polygamy & even tried to kill himself all for the girl he loved, what more could he have done?wil agree though the last part of the series was a bit dodgy and out of place!

Heh, I recently only started reading the manga after holding back for so long, but I kinda stopped for the time being so as to let the anime finish before I properly sit down and enjoy it.

yea actually i really want to read this now just to see how the current manga evolutions from the former. Cheers for the blog!

Dick: The anime is NOTHING like the manga - sorta like how JC Staff the past few years has butchered manga storylines to make ‘original, fresher’ stories. They share one concept: ‘monster of the week gets beat up by sexy vampire after normal human boy gets beat up a bit’.. and that’s pretty much it.

Passin: Are you talking about Kokoa? i’m only into Chapter 3 of R&V II. Or do you mean Ruby?

I just read the first 5 chapters. Ugh Cocoa and Moka. Lol what are her other sisters named Latte and Chocolat? Anyway really really awful. Almost GONZO level awful. I can’t stand to read anymore of that crap :/ Sorry won’t be keeping up with season 2.

I thought the first season was okay but the second has just been terrible. It’s like the author saw the anime and decided to make the manga more like it.

Yea haha that’s the feeling I got too

  20. carlNo Gravatar CANADAon 11 Mar 2008 at 8:41 pm

nah, if you read the second second, starting with chapter 4, they have a plot that spans more than two chapters where the opponent doesn’t get defeated in one chapter, and one of Moka’s sisters. The first three chapters are kind of crappy but I think it gets better from there, I mean some filler once in a while isn’t bad since it’s supposed to be a harem manga though three chapters right at the start is a bit too much.

I really like the character on Moka. After his birthday during the 1st manga season, I really thought they were gona resolve the love triangle issue. I mean, we all know that He loves Moka with all his heart and she loves him as well. But I am getting the feeling from the writer that Moka and Tsukune are never gona be together as a couple. Even though Moka loves him, there are parts of the Manga were she wants to be with him and then there are other parts where she seems like they are only friends and it will never be anything more. It’s too bad because I want them to be together and that Moka is one sexy ass character. I don’t know why writers are so afraid to bring their characters together. I’ve been keeping up with the manga mainly because of their relationship.

One more thing I just thought of. In a harem, the male has to pick on of the girls. But in that Since, I don’t consider R+V a harem because Tsukune has already made his choice. I mean, it’s 100% clear that Moka is the girl of him dreams. All she would have to say is “Tsukune, take me” and it would be all over with. It’s basically been her that has been the obstacle keeping them apart. Many times in the story she has separated herself from him and it’s always him going to find her and convincing her that he should be by her side. She believes that she is bad for Tsukune and that is what keeps her holding back. And if you think about it, she’s very bad for him. She is the reason he has stayed at the school and he has gone through complete and total hell for her. So therefore, there’s no choice, Tsukune is completely in love 100% with Moka. I wonder if Moka’s Vampire side even ever allow her to be Tsukune? I do believe the Vampire side loves him as well, she is just more realistic than the sweet and emotional side of Moka. The Vampire side of moka keeps reminding us that there are 2 Mokas with different hearts but I don’t belive it. I think there is only 1 moka and she just uses this 2 moka things as an excuse or somthing to hide behind. When it seems like she is talking to the rosary, I believe it is just her thinking and she’s really not talking to it. If there really are 2 mokas, that leave a lot of questions like what would happen to the outer moka if the vampire came out forever. You know what I’m saying. Anyway this is my take on it all and these are the points that are driving me nuts.

where did u guys read the last chapters of the first season. i just found till chapter 34. i really think we ll have to wait to see Moka showing her true feelings and kissing tsukune. sometimes i think moka is just atracted because of tsukunes blood and doesnt really love him and tsukune will notice that. i hope second season gets better.

I really love this show ( haven’t read manga but i am really enjoying anime so don’t bash me plz ^^ )

actually what Jeffrey Gibson said are some of the things that bother me the most about this story. To be honest I watch the show, as probably most of us, to see Tsukune and Moka end up together. But really the fact that she has 2 personalities bugs me a lot. btw the thing he though in the end of seson 1 in anime ( “Could it be that i have feelings for other moka?” ) could someone who has read the manga explain it a bit? will they explain that storyline more later on??? and is the moka he loves even real or is she just a made up personality the vampire is using as a shield???

i guess what i wanna know the most is if normal moka is real and are the feelings she have for Tsukune real???
