Let’s Studying!
So in light
of gia’s post on mixi, she recommended a site where users can type entries in the language they’re studying and those whose native language this is, can correct the user. The site is called Lang-8. This is actually a really great feature, almost like open source, where everyone helps everyone else. This is also the best way to practice, instead of sitting in class and zoning out while your teacher tells you how to say “I want 3 pencils” 20 times. I really want to start using it and I hope someone will come around and correct me because I haven’t really done any “studying progress” for a while (and watching anime/drama doesn’t count
)
If you decide to join my nickname on there is the usual Hinano. On that note, if anyone out there is studying Russian I can probably help you out as well. ![]()

I can probably teach people Malay, but I don’t think anyone would be interested.
I’m really against these kinds of things if you’re serious about studying a language. I personally believe nothing can replace a classroom setting because it is important to have that backing by an actual teacher who knows their stuff.
Although, once I probably set foot on Japan everything I’ve learned for the past summer and a year will probably go out the window since we’re taught zero colloquial speech.
Koji> I disagree with you because 90% of my Japanese was learned outside the classroom.
I’m not bragging that I’m fluent, but it sure got me a lot further than my classmates who only relied on classes to learn.
If you honestly have the motivation, you shouldn’t need someone to sit there telling you to read the book. Only thing I think that can really be taught is reading and writing, especially kanji. I never bothered to self-study that so I can barely write any.
Shin> XD Well they do have a Chinese section…I dunno what that entails though ^^;
I’ve heard about that but I’m hesitant to join. Can just native speakers edit your entries or is it open for anyone?
Caitlin> Anyone who joins the site can edit entries
That sounds like an interesting site
*runs off to join* Playing video games in Japanese makes me realize just how bad my reading comprehension is …
The best way to learn a language is to date someone whose native tongue is in that language. I know it works for me.
Hinano > I agree with about the part on learning Japanese out of the classroom. Just through normal conversations with Japanese students of somewhat the same age, I realised I have learned quite alot, and have become much more confident to speak Japanese as compared to before.
Haha this looks cool. I’ll definitely have to try it out since I’ve been stalled as well…. :S. Too bad I’ll probably still be stalled until the summer x3
eh why?
You speak Russian too? Kool! My sister’s husband is Russian; I’ve heard him speak it and it sounds sooo difficult. I think that’s why they drink so much.
I hope you’re very successful in your learning venture.
Skewl…duh! =( …..let’s rehash all the stuff you learned in high school and take all your money! yay!
I guess I’ll have to second (third? fourth? fifth?) the statement that way more is always learned outside of the classroom. :S
Hotarubi> Can I respond in English? XD It takes me forever to type in Russian because I’m not used to the keyboard.
I think so too, that’s why I joined that site. You can basically write “diary entries” so others can come by and correct them for you. So far I’ve had a few people from Japan correct my writing (although most of my problem is forgetting to add を or は which is mainly because I don’t think to do it in information conversations.)
