Is it worth expanding myself on to DLSite?

Published by Hinano at 10:07 pm under Unsorted

For those unfamiliar with DLSite it’s basically a site which allows artists, creators etc to sell their games, doujinshi, illustration collections online. Unfortunately most of it is pr0n but there’s a section for women that has some yaoi and non porno stuff. The English section I believe is anything and everything.

Just a work in progress…

So here I am thinking…..what if I drew my own doujin and uploaded it there? There’s even a feature now that allows you to “localize to Japan” so I can say post an English version and then a Japanese version for anybody who wants to buy one in Japan. This will solve my “dilemma” of wanting to do works from say Neuro or Vocaloid and there may actually be people who would be willing to buy these. They even offer a copy protection for free so people don’t go bootlegging your stuff. Their recommended price for a doujin is about $4-5 (depending on page length I guess?)

Would this be something for me to consider? I mean if I did well enough, I’d stop going to these cursed anime cons and sitting my butt hoping someone would buy my doujins because everyone would rather buy “chibi yaoi stickers buttons and yaoi paddles”

To my Japanese readers: もし自分の同人日本のDLSITEうpロードしたら誰か買いますか? (もちろん日本語に訳したあと。)

All input on this is appreciated. If I were to seriously do this likely I’d start doing it to my out of print doujins after Anime Boston passes.

Well, why I have absolutely no authority on the issue, I can’t see the harm in doing this and it could well be beneficial for more er ‘niche’ stuff you make. If and when I ever start reading doujinshi then I’ll strive to read one of yours first.

hmm the ‘niche’ bit sounds a bit wrong…

haha. When I browsed some stuff there its like ALL ADULT lol. It makes me wonder if my only drawback would be that I draw safe for work comics

Using the odd logic from Cromartie High School, your SFW works will stand out in the NSFW world like a rabbit amongst the lions… which makes it one awesome rabbit! :P

Just make the covers look NSFW and then don’t actually put any pr0n in. TEASE FTW!

I will tell everyone to buy your doujinshi on Friday. Then you will sell out and be free to have fun at the con on Saturday!

As for that DL site, you should just take your latest obsession “all the way”–make a Ronald McDonald ero doujinshi and make tons of yen!

I hate DL-site because they don’t allow lolicon and many other controversial types of art be bought on the English side of the site. Some really idiotic censoring going on there.

Wouldn’t hurt, but I have always wondered how could one prevent your work from being lost in the crowd? It requires a good amount of promotion, I think.

    I’ve been tempted myself.

.. is this a safe place to say that new McDonald’s theme frightens me, especially after seeing what Ronald did in School Days? ;)

    issa> Oh good point!

Kabitzin> I wonder if anyone would get pissed for false advertising XD

DS> LOL! But I also have prints  Also I’ll pass on that donald doujin lol.

Anonymous> LOL well from what I saw, it was pretty gross enough. Even in their indexing area where you pick a “fetish” they had everything I could think of, but then again I don’t do porn so I’m probably not as creative lol.

Nemo> Well for starters I’d probably announce it on this blog and deviantart really :P Shameless promos ftw!

    同人誌は今まで買ったことないです。
    あと、インターネットでお金を使用する取引はしないことにしているんだ
    クレジットカードとかの情報もれが怖いから。

    でも、ヒナノの同人誌は興味あるよ。ナルトの同人誌とか

Oh, and I wanted to point out, stuff like DLsite is a better medium for full-color art, CG type stuff…since it doesn’t cost the exorbitant color printing amounts.

I’ve seen lots of Japanese artists who just put out CD’s of art, in like, jpg or png or whatever…DLsite is a good place for that kind of stuff.

Anonymous> Yea I noticed people doing that. So you think that me putting doujinshi there isn’t a good idea? I figured if I localize it for Japan, I would at least be able to reach an audience beyond anime conventions.

    ひでぽん>なるほど。ひでぽんさん私の同人買ったらうれしいです。問題なのは私の日本語の訳は大丈夫になるのでしょ。

I’d say go for it; you’ve got nothing to lose from this.

I totally love your art, and seeing how much trouble you had with finding a printer this last time around, it would make sense to try something new.

What do you have to lose? And if all else fails, 3 words: Yaoi & Corn cobs.

I originally found DLSite while researching the Blade Visual Novel Engine (released by Curious Factory, which has a contract with DLSite) back when Heart’s Content was still a VN. I thought about making something to sell there, but decided my skills weren’t up to the level of the Japanese doujin artists and everyone would laugh at my poor renditions of J.C.Staff characters and my original hunched, noseless, flat-chested high school girls.

Speaking of which, do you seriously think your work is good enough? You draw a lot of things well, but if you put up something that looks like that piano in one of your deviantart posts it’ll seem really unprofessional.

  18. Hinano UNITED STATESon 01 Mar 2008 at 9:34 pm

sixten> After seeing this and this (NSFW) I am confident that my work isn’t any more awful than that to be on there. Besides I’d only put doujinshi there, not like CG collections or anything.

Also I’m not aiming for professional, I am merely sharing my fandom with the rest of the world.

  19. Link UNITED STATESon 01 Mar 2008 at 10:28 pm

Everyone that I know that looks at DLSite likes it for porn, so I wouldn’t be too optimistic on putting anything clean there.

  20. Veggies UNITED STATESon 02 Mar 2008 at 6:25 am

There’s no real downside to doing this from what I understand, I just wouldn’t expect much out of it considering DLsite’s usual population and preferences.
