My Poor Attempt at a Figure Review.

Published by Hinano at 6:34 pm under Shakugan no Shana, Unsorted

Unlike the former tjhan (who’s now too whipped to take upskirt figure photos) I don’t spend more than $12 on a figure and I don’t especially go out to take specially composed photos of them. I also try to not buy figures because they end up dust fodder on my manga bookshelf so along with today’s figure, I have a total of 3 and 3 sailormoon nendoroid figures. I also have really bad luck when it comes to trading figures - I never get the one I want (or maybe you can think of it as good luck because 2 of my 3 figures are the “secret” ones ??)

Anyway today at Kinounkiya I was hoping to get the Sumomo figure seen above, but as my luck would have it I got a Shana. It could have been worse: I coulda gotten Wilhelmina

I tried to make it cool by trying to make the back drop of “Manhattan Skyline” since that’s what I see from my window but I really REALLY suck at taking any kind of photos without sunlight. They always look bad - I don’t know crap about photography, the only reason I passed my photo class in college is I took all my photos between 10AM and 1PM lol.

As far as the figure….THAT’S A LONG SWORD. She takes up like twice as much space as any other figure I have because of that long thing. Could poke someone’s out out with that.

Also her skirt appears to be removable so if your otaku heart desires, you can have her standing strong in her panties.

I also had trouble putting her parts together especially the hands. Sometimes I really wonder why some parts come separately. There’s no way because they can’t fit it into that box. There’s gotta be some other ulterior motive to this whole figure building thing that I’m just not getting.

The figure itself is pretty cool though. Aside from the rongu sword, I like the hair and the “torn clothes” effect is kinda cool (although perverts would say it’s cool for other reasons but anyway.)

Only thing is her face looks a bit weird but this isn’t a premium figure so that’s to be expected.

And for something more “dramatic” I went with a darker image:

Ah well there’s just some things I’m not meant to do.

You gave a “panties” tag line? Are you trying to usurp “WTF” from it’s rightful place at the top?

It’s not a bad figurine. The mouth could be better, but it looks good. And don’t knock your photo skills. You’re just as average as everybody else.

Those shots don’t look too bad. The photos I usually take usually turn out so crappy that I have to let other people retake them, although they didn’t exactly fair any better either :D

First srs bsns anime and now figures? What has the world come to!

Totali> Wait till you see my post on Ronald McDonald

Shin> Yea I took a bunch of photos and like at least 10 of them were too blurry to even use lol.

Sabrina> I figured I needed to balance the WTFness of my posts

Well, you can switch on all the lights in the room if you have poor lighting. Or pose your figurine outdoors in daylight. Try going for a plain white or “soft” tone (e.g. light blue) backdrop to bring out the figurine’s details. Macro mode can be helpful to capture the more intricate details. A glass backdrop isn’t recommended because the flash will bounce off the glass.

One bad thing about point-and-shoot digi cams is the direct flash, so you can try soften the flash by covering the flash with a piece of tissue/paper. Try to keep your ISO to a minimum (max 200). Using timer mode along with a mini camera stand will help greatly.

Pretty good figure for what it is though. Other than Sumomo and Wilhelmia was there anyone else in the set?

Funny, I just got a 1/6 Kasumi figurine (yes, the one were she is adjusting her stocking) that cost a lot more that $12.

Fat Cat> I see you’re pro. :P I actually used a tripod to help me, otherwise photos without flash are blur-o-rama. And as I said before I don’t have time to go out in the day and take figure photos - I have a job xD

Tess> Also included Prima Aspelas from Nanatsuiro drops, and a tanktop/shorts sitting down Shana with black hair.

Drakron> Haha they do sell expensive figures at Kinokuniya (I’ve seen that $60 haruhi) but spending so much money on dust collectors just isn’t my thing :P

Not a pro, but I’ve picked up a few tips and lessons while taking pictures at events and of my figurines. ;)

Actually I payed more that $60 … is this one:

Much as I like shana pan… (err… I didn’t say anything) this figures sucks, without even reading the review. There are some nice shana figures around. And Wilhelmina, kitchen destroyer, is cute!

I have a matching pair of Alter Fate and Nanoha. Fate comes with a box big enough for her to kidnap nanoha and spirit her away for some rampant yuri orgy.

That said, plushes are better. Like… DX Dejiko & Co. plushies sitting on my bookshelf.

Hide your figure in a bag and bring it to work. During your lunch break, go to the steps of the NYPL or into Bryant Park. Take as many daylight pictures as you want (just ignore the people staring at you). Or go to Kinokuniya and take a picture in the cafe with the view out the window. And at the cafe you could buy a melonpan and take a picture of her spearing it with her sword!

    So no more excuses!

And that tenth picture down might give people the wrong idea!

“I also had trouble putting her parts together”

Oh man, tell me about it!! I have this “Kyon’s little sister” (wanted Haruhi, but at least I also got Mikuru :3) trading figure and it was like, impossible to put her skirt on! Its like the creators of the figure WANTED YOU TO TAKE HER SKIRT OFF! It just takes patience I guess (and forcing/jamming the parts in)

Also beware of putting the parts in the wrong hole! On my Revoltech Yotsuba& figure, I accidentally put the neck compartment the opposite way, and almost permanently had her in “Angry Face” mode!

*reads DS’s comment* Man, someone beat me to it  but yea…. I think you need to add some more “suggestive” pics of Shana, if ya catch ma driff?

@ Drakron: Don’t worry, it was worth every penny! XD

  16. Hinano UNITED STATESon 21 Feb 2008 at 8:03 am

Whatever this suggestiveness is, I’m not getting it. :???:
It must be part of that figure thing I’m really missing xD

The other day I was at Columbus Circle and there was a guy feeding and conversing with the pigeons as if they were talking back to him for a good 15 minutes, so yeah I don’t think taking pictures of a figurine would be any weirder than your average day in a Manhattan park.

Calawain> I hear ya lol. I ended up just buying a bento at cafe zaiya and eating it at my desk
