Clannad - 17

Published by Hinano at 9:29 pm under Clannad

GO AWAY YOU’RE DEAD…JUST LIKE THIS GAG!

Clannad is starting to remind me of this song by B’z called “Lady-Go-Round“. (Which was actually translated by me back in my B’z fangirl days.) It’s like 1 girl comes, goes, next one arrives. While I think their temporary kicking of Nagisa out of the picture is a good way to focus on the other girls’ stories - the fact that they’re trying to smush Tomoyo AND Kyo/Ryo it’s starting to become some kind of nabe pot, and not the good kind.

I honestly actually liked Kyo’s story but I’ve said like a million times how she’s really conflicty with the other girls. Unfortunately because of that and KyoAni trying to make her blend it - it just seems so tacky to me. I mean closing her in a shed with Tomoya? That never actually happened in the game. The omajinai in the reference room, yes that did happen - the actual event? No. Not even in Kyo’s story :S Also Tomoyo randomly showing up to wake Tomoya up……weird. I mean its in her story but her doing it so SUDDENLY is bizarre. On top of that Tomoya’s “I can’t have a girlfriend I’m a delinquent” was only said in Tomoyo’s story. He never thought that way in Nagisa’s story

Well at least he had some thoughts about her. (Although he visited her like every day in the game ARGH! )

I don’t know whether to feel sorry for Kyo, be annoyed at KyoAni’s fillers when they have plenty of real material to work with, or just laugh at the general stupidity of this scene.

Upcoming Attractions
: Tomoya gets kicked out of school, wait wtf e_e All the girls stories are blending so much at this point I don’t know what to think anymore.

Edit: 80s Explosion!

I think this is the inevitable result of trying please all the Kyou/Ryou/Tomoyo/Fuko/Kotomi fanboys at the same time, so that they will buy the ¥6,000 DVDs. The fact that they have now resorted to using filler really shows that they wrote themselves into a corner, despite having a mounds of material to choose from.As much as KyoAni is extolled for its gorgeous animation (not going to dispute that) I don’t think their adaptions are quite up to what people make it out to be. For example I just finished watching Air for the first time recently, and either I am blithering idiot that cannot comprehend a moe anime or the disjointed storytelling made itimpossible understand what the point of the show was (besides make me very sad). Trying to implement several incompatible routes from a “Visual novel” always leads to disaster. Fate/stay night for example had only 3 routes but they are not compatible at all, so the anime was a mess that did not capture 75% of the game’s awesomeness.

I’m kinda glad I haven’t played the game; I really liked this episode.

    B’z FUCK YEAH

Anyway, I am not enjoying Clannad on the level as say Air or Kanon. At first I thought it was maybe just because it wasn’t Air or Kanon (lol), but I actually really think now that it’s the direction Kyoani is going with Clannad. It’s a shame too because I don’t know much about Clannad to begin with and Air and Kanon were actually pretty faithful, but this animated Clannad version doesn’t feel so. I need to go through the actual game.

Its probably because CLANNAD was so much longer than the other key games…o_o And their wasting waay too much time with those little snippets of Fuko. Its ruining her ending for me..

    I still enjoy CLANNAD though.:3

Karuki> I never played the air game so I can’t comment on the adaptation but the anime made me cry a river so that’s pretty good. The clannad game while making me cry rivers, the anime adaptation is making me yell out “Wtf’s? more often :( I never thought after Kanon and Air that Clannad would be a disaster. It was going so well the first 13 eps or so too :(

    Totali> XD oh

Koji> woot B’z! I also love Hot Fashion, one day I’ll find some excuse to incorporate it into my posts. Check out my post on Clannad if you want spoilers :)

    Lunar> Yea the fact that they keep throwing Fuuko in is really throwing off the mood for the entire story =_=;

You can probably thank all the whiners during Kanon about how nearly all the girl characters (especially Makoto) vanished from the show until the final episodes once their arc is complete, with Clannad it seems that KyoAni is trying to make sure that no one simply disappears

    >That never actually happened in the game.

Er…you might want to dig into those memory banks a bit harder. It did happen in the game, in Yukine’s route. It’s one of the most highly rated scenes from the game, though ironically Kyou’s route is one of the lowest rated scenarios from the game, at least according to the majority of the game players.

  12. IcyStormNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 08 Feb 2008 at 12:50 am

Oh ****ing snap, just the pic alone reveals that Fuko returns yet again. I expect to laugh then, despite that a ton of people hate it :O

And tackling Kyou and Tomoyo at the same time? I don’t like it. I want them separate because I can’t handle the hawtness all at once.

  13. dtricksterNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 08 Feb 2008 at 1:58 am

Actually, the Kyo locked room scene was in the game. Depending on the choices you get either Kyo, Nagis, Tomoyo, Sunohara or Nagisas Dad in that scene

Agh, this is what I get for watching the widescreen releases only…

It really is disappointing to see this downhill slide, as I did enjoy the first two arcs. Hopefully, having not played the game, I may end up enjoying the series, though.

Or I should resist temptation and stop reading Clannad posts that are ahead of widescreen releases.

  16. RiftNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 08 Feb 2008 at 9:03 am

As always with these kinds of conversions, you can’t expect it to be dedicated to one girl. If you want that, go play the game. Isn’t it enough that Nagisa will be the clear winner in the end? It’s necessary for them to flesh out the cast, because if not… what would you get? As entertaining as Tomoya and Nagisa may be, an anime about them alone would be pretty dry… you need a supporting cast. And since this is an h-game conversion, that supporting cast is made up mostly of female characters.

It would be one thing if Tomoya was coming on to all of the girls or something ridiculous like that, but it’s pretty clear he likes Nagisa and has no interest in the other girls.

Now, the anime could just do a straight conversion of the Nagisa plot, and then… oh wait… no it can’t! Because unless you want the story to end in ridiculous tragedy, someone’s got to collect some lights…

So no matter what, KyoAni has got to adapt Nagisa’s story to fit the anime. And like it or not, Nagisa’s story does require Tomoya to form a bond with ALL of the girls to some extent. So geesh, cut the anime some slack… granted, I really can’t see how they’re going to do that in the episodes they have left.

Ganbare, KyoAni! Please don’t screw this up…

  17. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 08 Feb 2008 at 10:16 am

FF, trickster> I recall the Yukine story having like the scenario imagined in Tomoya’s head…I don’t recall the scene actually happening - maybe because I can’t recall a background image of a gym shed ?_? I dunno I played this game over a year ago :| *brain fart*

Ren> The song is “lady go round” which is what the anime is starting to feel like =P

mikemil> I wasn’t whining! I was glad girl X was out of the picture when her story ended, she’d only be in the way! Kinda like how Pooko is in the way…. :|
Rift> I’m not really complaining that Nagisa is out of the picture, I’m down with that. I just think the way they’re mushing up Tomoyo and Kyo is really weird.

  18. LeefeNo Gravatar SINGAPOREon 08 Feb 2008 at 11:14 am

Without actually knowing CLANNAD from the VN, the anime’s pretty enjoyable throughout. Moreover squeezing 5 routes into a 24 episode series is cutting it pretty tight…
Yeah I do agree Tomoyo’s morning raids are damn sudden. I went “Huh o.o”
Hopefully we get to see the After Story… and probably that’s why KyoAni’s blending the rest of the routes now. orz

I just wish that Clannad will stop wasting the precious seconds they have on Fuuko or whatever that supposedly DEAD character for Kyou and Tomoyo. Seriously, she’s wasting space and time.

    Hate hate hate~

See, you would be able to *fully* enjoy this all in one mixed story *only* in case you didn’t know the original version from game. Isn’t that obvious?
Maybe Fūko is showing annoyingly too often, but other than that I actually love that show (never seen the game) and wish it to finish at least as good as other key adaptations from KyōAni.

  22. AmoirspNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 08 Feb 2008 at 2:54 pm

Hinano: You probably cannot recall a background image of a gym because in the game … there wasn’t one! (and naturally kyoani makes one since they’re animating the scene.)

Therefore it is not a brain fart. The background during the same gym scene is pitch black (you only see the girl … or guy you’re talking to.)

Surprisingly this episode had almost no filler. Heck, Tomoya thinking about Nagisa in the middle of the episode was more filler than the other things you see (only because that format of flashback is only in anime. (Now there’s probably adjustments to what was shown, like the dispelling of the spell is actually take off trousers, not shirt. Another would be lunch, sure, but the context into it is different though the context alone has some accuracy. Or Tomoyo supposedly getting to Okazaki first and Kyou ranting on it, or Ryou not liking pushing the idea of getting to Okazaki due to Nagisa out of commission, etc.)

Unlike the other two Fuuko gags, the one in this episode is actually in the game.

  23. FlameStrikeNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 08 Feb 2008 at 5:05 pm

Whoa it seems like it’s REALLY hard to please everyone is it? I mean in Kanon/Air people were complaning about how the girls were too seperated, and here in Clannad we get some nice interweaveing for once and people start saying that the girls don’t get enough focus… *sigh*

Personally I’m likeing Clannad the best out of Air and Kanon. Air was too seperate for my tastes, and the ending suxed (not the Misuzu dieing the lame Crow thing). Kanon was great but Clannad seems to be just as enjoyable.

My answer to the question would be…

No. If you did that, I would have to… prematurely extinguish your existence from many planes… in extremely horrible ways.

And is it me or has the animation quality slipped down to that of lets say… your favourite satelight? >_>

  26. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 08 Feb 2008 at 8:18 pm

  27. TaiyakiNo Gravatar MEXICOon 08 Feb 2008 at 9:19 pm

Personally, I don’t care if they end up ruining Tomoyo/Kyou’s arcs, since it was obvious that they’d have trouble implementing them to the anime adaptation. Besides, the only thing that I’ve been looking forward to from the beginning is Nagisa’s arc, so the rest doesn’t really matter to me. ^^

  28. O.DNo Gravatar SINGAPOREon 08 Feb 2008 at 9:30 pm

To each his own, I guess. I havent’ (but wish to) play the game itself, but having it animated has its own quirks. It just depends on your own point of view. That being said, it isn’t easy to step out of pessimistic views and look at things at a different angle.

  29. Parallel PainNo Gravatar CANADAon 08 Feb 2008 at 11:50 pm

Given the short amount of time Kyoani is under, Kyoani can’t just forget about the lights and do normal + miracle without them. I mean Nagisa’s route + afterstory is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG.
But then they already screwed up tonnes of famous scenes.
Basically they could have dropped famous scenes from 2 chars and get it exactly right for one. Now they try to implement all the 3 character’s famous scenes and failing at all of it.
This is definately the worst of the 3 key’s-game-turned-animes by Kyoani. I have to say even the fight scene in the game is better done.

Though personally the lock-in-storageroom thing was a good way to advance Kyou’s route IMO (not that I want it advanced).

    Rankings?
Game: Clannad > Air > Kanon
Anime: Kanon > Air > Clannad

I personally think all VN should be done like Little Busters!’s “Different reality.” Either that or make a 12 episode one entirely dedicated to the main heroine who has the best story anyway and just make everyone else friends.

Anyone think Hiiragi would come in? I personally think his story was very worth reading, and even though we won’t get to see it in the anime it’s a quick way to end Kyou/Ryou route that the company just got stuck on.

  30. Parallel PainNo Gravatar CANADAon 08 Feb 2008 at 11:52 pm

  32. CalawainNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 09 Feb 2008 at 1:50 am

Mmmm I thought the episode was funny, but that’s because I’m in love with Kyou. Definitely a weird hodgepodge of different game arcs here. They are trying a different approach here it seems from the other adaptations because the arcs conflict with each other heavily, with romance early on in them. They are doing an admirable job, it’s just difficult.

The locked in the locker thing wasn’t a filler, it just was from Yukine’s route. During that charm scene you can pick Kyou, Nagisa, Tomoyo, Akio, Misae, and Fuko-depending on the choices you had made previously. You have had to hit some minor flags for them to have it available. Out of all of them that I did Kyou’s was by far the best. Although in the game they are locked in a tiny room where they are pushing up against each other and it’s a lot more sexual.

wheres the romance? is this a harem romance anime? to and what the hell happened to the chibibot/loli pair? what are they? where are they? development plz!

every episode of clannad makes me realize how good the makoto arc in kanon was and how much better the anime as a whole was executed!

clannad so needs to go back to the combo meter!

    oh and nice animation!

  35. Parallel PainNo Gravatar CANADAon 12 Feb 2008 at 12:03 am

You want some real good romance + important life lessons go read the game instead. This series has disappointed me from the start, and though it makes up for it a lot of time in 1~14, it’s dropping. I hope it picks up but I doubt it will.

As for the junk-robot and little girl parts, in the game when read together it almost read like a semi-romance short story with the depth of Zen Buddhism.

  36. FlameStrikeNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 13 Feb 2008 at 11:42 pm

Hey can anyone give me more details about the lights needed for Nagisa’s route? I don’t want any spoilers though, but I heard that if you do Nagisa’s route without lights you end up in SAD END. I’d like to know if the route takes a huge turn w/o lights and if I should save it for last, or do it with lights first then again without.

    and to dick:
What do you mean where’s the romance? They’ve been developing Nagisa x Tomoya all anime, compared to Ayu and Yuuichi’s “Lol ur the last one lets kiss” approach. Although I didn’t really have a problem with it Nagisa x Tomoya is much more fleshed out. Kyou and Ryou also seem to have feeligns for him too. I don’t think you can get a harem in the original game though, but I’ve only finished Tomoyo’s awesome route so don’t qoute me on that.

Er and what’s with the focus on the Makoto arc? By the end of that arc I was thinking “Ugh die already so we can get to Mai” heh.
I also wouldn’t go as far as to say EVERY episode of Clannad is worse than Kanon.

  37. Skesk La PestNo Gravatar CANADAon 14 Feb 2008 at 11:06 am

well all I have to say is that I am SOOOOOOOOO glad I didn’t play the game. I have noticed that a lot of the people complaining about the girls and their stories and “what actually happened” and “this wasn’t in it” and blah blah are the ones who UNFORTUNATELY played the game. Let’s face it folks: the producers don’t have enough money to make EVERY FACET of the story come TRUE! (and if they did, wouldn’t that make Tomoya a real whore rather than a helpful sarcastic gentleman?)
So here’s some advice: if you’ve played the game, stop whinning. YEs, it’s not the same. Yes, the rest of us like it like that. Get over it or stop watching!!!
(the fact that you can’t help yourself from watching the rest of the episodes means that you DO like the show, no? lol)
