Urge to cosplay rising.

Published by Hinano at 4:06 pm under Conventions

I need some quick advice from my readers:

Should I cosplay the gal above? I found a costume for $168 (+probably an ungodly amount of shipping) that will ship to the US of A but is it worth it? You know I’m a pretty active cosplayer who can’t sew for jack and most of my costumes consist of store bought items slapped together to look bootleg enough to pass for the character. I had original plans of doing another slapped bootleg costume of Amu from Shugo Chara but this just makes my life so much easier…hmmmmmmmmm. I love Miku’s character design though (even though I think Vocaloid 2 stinks lol) Opinions anybody?

Isn’t Miku’s costume on the whole one which should be easy to slap together? The only problem I see are the sleeves which are probably connected to the top and the rest of its volume control patterns.

you totally should!!! gosh i dont know what the costume looks like but the character’s clothes are awesome!!!

“The only problem I see are the sleeves which are probably connected to the top and the rest of its volume control patterns.”

I would think the bigger problem is that long voluptuous green hair. While it’s not hard to find hair (even green one) that long, it’ll be hard to have it not look completely flat and lifeless.

And her hair is her most defining characteristics!

That $168 better include some serious amount of stiffening gel and hair spray.

    It’s hard to slap it together because of the details on the shirt & skirt (all those green lines and stuff yuck and pleated skirts oh good lord don’t get me started.) When I say I can’t sew I really mean all I can do is poke a needle through some fabric with my hands that’s about it x_X;

I can’t tell you if it’s worth the money, but I think it’s a really great cosplay subject.

I’m inclined to dislike the character for being a really petty marketing tool, but it is an awesome design.

Was this heightened sense gained from a radioactive bite from Ayu’s backback?

I dunno. I prefer Amu, but I’m biased (and not in the cosplay scene). :P

  7. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 6:30 pm

Actually I happen to have a green wig on me (but its more lime green than aqua like Miku’s) so at least I could save money on that lol. It’s pretty flat and lifeless so that would probably be the least of my worries. I also have hair wax which I’ve used to style wigs so that isn’t an issue either.

Also for Amu I’d actually have to go out and finda fabric to match a plaid skirt that I’d also have to find. I dunno this just seems so easy to do! Now I just gotta figure out how to get the fake leek! XD

May be for $60, but not $168+S/H. That is too much to spend for temporary amusement.

  9. DSNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 6:58 pm

    Amu Amu Amu!!!

  10. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 7:16 pm

maglor> its pretty impossible to find a good costume for $60 even on ebay (they always make it like $40 and then stack on like $50 shipping)

  11. maglorNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 7:26 pm

Hinano> I didn’t know those were that expensive! $168 is pretty much the my family’s one week grocery bill!

  12. ForceflowNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 7:27 pm

    Lime green.. lol i tink it might look abit odd. ^^;;

Maybe you could get someone to help you with the sewing?

Most of the green parts i’ve seen should be accomplished with the sewing on a small section of green fabric. The details on the sleeves are boxed in so its actually possible to print it out on a transparency, cut it out and fix it to the sleeve.

Maybe you could get someone to help you with the sewing?

If I knew someone in New York City who would sew my costumes for free I don’t think I’d be making these kinds of posts XD I don’t even have my own sewing machine ^^; Normally, I wouldn’t even do a costume like this because I couldn’t put it together.

    zomg Miku, do it!

Does it come with a leek? You can’t have a miku costume without a leek.

hino.. u’v got to be careful.. sometimes u dun get wad u see on the pictures.. soo think twice or trice… laods of my frend order things by shipment and wad they got was different from what they saw on the picture…

  16. JusticeNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 8:31 pm

Where can you buy the outfit?

  17. Di Gi KazuneNo Gravatar MALAYSIAon 18 Dec 2007 at 8:35 pm

    Kazune Miku approves!

And JP can go as Suzune Rin… >_>

  18. TeeifNo Gravatar UNITED KINGDOMon 18 Dec 2007 at 8:39 pm

    Go for Miku!!

Amu looks far too much like Avril Lavigne stylie generic rock chick. Miku looks like a good ole’ roboto-chan, complete with 01 painted on her shoulder. Make sure the hair and tie/skirt colours match! The downside about Miku is that you might get lots of random (anime) song requests. ^_0

  19. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 8:42 pm

Justice> I found a site called Cosmates or something

Shirukii> It doesn’t come with a leek. There’s that site that sells the plastic leeks but I don’t know if they ship to the US T_T

  20. ForceflowNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 18 Dec 2007 at 8:51 pm

    Ah. ^^;;;

The leek how bout modding a plastic rod and spray painting with green and white? The ‘Y’ bend can be done by using a connector and using putty to even the slope.

  21. DrmChsr0No Gravatar SINGAPOREon 18 Dec 2007 at 9:31 pm

Get yer own real (organic) leek. It’s cheap and you can eat it afterwards :P

Assuming it’s in season, that is.

    Also, FLIP A COIN.

  22. StarCreatorNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 1:27 am

It might be just me, but I’m not all that impressed by Miku’s design - and definitely wouldn’t spend THAT much money to get an outfit you could only get away with wearing twice a year. (Plus, do Japanese sizes actually fit you? o.O) Amu seems a lot more realistic and a lot more attractive to me…

I think i’ve found the costume tha hinano found

  24. AtashiNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 4:12 am

$168 isn’t worth it without the wig or super quality sleeves and thigh-high boots, and I don’t think the seller includes those.

  25. Di Gi KazuneNo Gravatar MALAYSIAon 19 Dec 2007 at 8:55 am

    mmm… Santa Meido…

    !!! DI GI CHARAT OUTFIT!!!

    A Misha and Shia…

    Shana seifuku…

    /me starts imagining hinano in those… :3

I advise…. dejiko. Comes with everything you need except for nyos.

  27. JusticecNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 9:38 am

The site, Cosmates, is way overpriced and judging by the pictures, they aren’t worth it at all.

  28. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 10:18 am

StarCreator> Are you thinking I’m fat or something? :|

  29. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 10:19 am

Also the Misha outfit was tempting ;P

  30. Di Gi KazuneNo Gravatar MALAYSIAon 19 Dec 2007 at 10:29 am

Go as Misha and JP as Kotarou >_>

  31. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 11:21 am

Problem is I don’t really wanna spend $267 on that outfit (+ add whatevre it costs for a long pink wig ^^;)

I migh end up doing Amu after all, it’s a lot easier to find most of her stuff in a store, I’d only have to do a little sewing on the “socks” or whatever she has.

  32. DSNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 11:39 am

Do Amu or follow my advice and be a Dango!

  33. StarCreatorNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 3:58 pm

I’m more thinking of how impossibly tiny some Japanese girls are - it’s honestly not a body type that I’ve seen any other nationality possess, including other asians. I wear a US small and have enough trouble finding suits that fit me in my own country - I don’t think I’d even try to find ready-made Japanese clothing that fits me correctly x_x

I also haven’t slept since Monday, so please excuse any incoherentness.

  34. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 4:58 pm

actually japanese clothes would fit me well mainly because I’m already pretty small and the average american clothing size now customs to fatasses.

  35. Di Gi KazuneNo Gravatar MALAYSIAon 19 Dec 2007 at 10:09 pm

    A Dejiko is cheaper >_>

  36. TessNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 19 Dec 2007 at 11:43 pm

I think another cosplay site would be more worth it since I don’t like Cosmates quality… however other sites with better costumes will most likely go from $260-500 orz

Main reason why I don’t cosplay much. Poor and can’t sew.

  37. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 20 Dec 2007 at 12:03 am

haha i spent this afternoon looking up Amu stuff and it would cost me approximately $60 (or les if I can find sales) to make her costume so Amu it is =P

  38. Di Gi KazuneNo Gravatar MALAYSIAon 20 Dec 2007 at 5:06 am

The pink wig is optional. A lot of Japanese Mishas just leave it and still look good.

  39. Dancing QueenNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 21 Dec 2007 at 12:57 am

$168 is not worth it at all!!! plus if it’s that shiny material a definite no
those are the worst cosplays, plus if it ends up not fitting right it’ll be really hard to fix, compared to if say it were made of cotton.Thats much easily to get fixed or even tailored but when it’s the plasticy stuff thats a big no-no…

  40. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 21 Dec 2007 at 11:48 am

haha yea I’ve already come to the conclusion I won’t be doing this, its too much money for something that doesn’t live up to its value. (if it included wig and boots and the leek etc then it might be worth getting XD)

  41. Di Gi KazuneNo Gravatar MALAYSIAon 21 Dec 2007 at 8:31 pm

  42. biankitaNo Gravatar PHILIPPINESon 22 Mar 2008 at 10:17 am

I don’t get it… why do you guys spend THAT much for costumes??? Cosplays here in the Philippines usually feature either self-made or seamstress made ones that are done in a very small budget. And these are excellently executed. The most expensive a cosplayer would spend on his/her costume is probably for the wig. The only people who buy costumes are first-time cosplayers.

And this is what gives us the range of anime representation in the cons. For the last three cons we had here, there have been at least 6 Amus in 300 cosplayers.

You should really go here… Cons here are excellent and Komikons come in once a year but are very lucrative to participants.
