Another striking death hits the Naruto manga.

Published by Hinano at 6:52 pm under Manga, Naruto

But first, Naruto’s mom revealed!

I never expected her to have long hair, go figure! More spoilers ahead, click at your own risk.

So for those reading the manga, today we have to face the fact - Jiraiya dies. Our favorite Ero-sennin is gone and our Legendary Sannin is down to the Legendary Hitori, and current Hokage - Tsunade. When Asuma died I was sad, however when Jiraiya was taken down that was a real blow for me. Jiraiya was definitely one of my likeable characters and hell I’m upset as a reader, but when Naruto finds out, I expect him to go full Kyuubi or something.

Kishimoto made it even more depressing by pointing out that Naruto was named after a character in Jiraiya’s books, which basically means “Jiraiya” named him. On the other hand, I guess I kind of expected it. If Jiraiya won, then there wouldn’t be some major battle with the Akatsuki leader and it would probably cut even more “battle time” for Kishimoto to draw (and make more money off people like me who buy all the tankobons ;P) It’s great to see the manga finally getting exciting again, but depressing that someone who’s on my 2007 Naruto calendar is no longer alive. (Well then again Oro’s dead too and he’s on there as well XD)

    And there goes another reason to actually read Naruto now . . . . . . .

I’m sorry to say that I really don’t enjoy Naruto post-time skip. I just don’t. Which makes me sad, cause I used to love it. Now that Jiraiya, one of the best damn characters in the whole series, is gone, I have even less reason to read.

Oh well, at least I still have One Piece . . . .

Yup its definitely depressing. When I was reading the previous chapter, I already had the gut feeling, OMG, he’s gonna die!!! What can we do!!

Heh, Naruto was named for that fish paste afterall.

You think you’re sad, wait till Kakashi finds out that there are no more books coming out.

  5. Hinano UNITED STATESon 14 Dec 2007 at 10:02 pm

Kabitzin> LOL XD I wonder if Kakashi knew that Naruto was named after the character in the books he’s been reading

L-chan> Aw really? That’s too bad, I actually really enjoy the time skip despite the fact that they’ve killed some pretty good characters :|

    Dave> Yep!

    alafista> Yea I did too for a while but I was hoping Kishimoto would prove me wrong ;_;

Even though Jiraiya’s death has been foreshadowed for the past couple of months already, I had always hoped that the time would never come. But it seems that it has finally arrived :(

I wonder what would be Naruto’s reaction when he learned about Jiraiya’s death. Would he continue to find Sasuke first or seek revenge on Pein?

But what I really want to know is what happened to Kushina. We know Minato give his life to seal the Kyuubi, but what about Kushina!

now im worried for that “pa” toad. lol. and i sure hope that they develop naruto’s mama story well and not let it be some lame “filler-type” story

I’ve been dreading this for MONTHS! I expected it as well, but I hoped against hope I was wrong. The story line lead you to this conclusion. When Jiraiya in that episode where they were looking for Tsunade and Naruto sees the Father & Son sharing an Ice cream and practically begs (emotionally) Jiraiya to step into that role and Jiraiya will have none of it, leaving Naurto crying; but int he end, Jiraiya bring him the ice cream and they share, just like the father and son; I knew. There was no other way it could end. Now Naruto has to go on some crazy ass vengeance and after all this time being alone. It’s so Knots Landing it’s laughable, but I’m in this bitch about 9 years deep and I can’t stop now.

While it is sad one of the better characters died, I am glad that they kill off the odd good character every now and again because it gives it a bit more credibility in my book. That’s one thing I don’t like about one piece, that reluctance to kill off even good characters who should have died.

Now just murder tenten and I’ll be happy the little waste of space is gone.

Hinano - my major complaint is that nearly all the side characters have been neglected. I mean, Team Gai, Team 8, they’ve barely had any screentime since the time skip. Even when they showed up, they didn’t get to do anything major, and, more importantly, have had NO character development. Like Kishimoto used up everything he had pre time-skip. (Gaara and Shikamaru notwithstanding, of course). The characters were always my major draw to Naruto, and post-time skip they all see pretty flat, hence my annoyance.

While Jiraiya has gotten a pretty good death drama-wise, I really hoped he would take somebody big out with him. But no, he gets shot down by Pein, a really really annoying character (to me). *sigh*

For a long time Akatsuki was my major reason to keep reading, but even they are losing their numbers (most notably Hidan and Kakuzu, aka “Bill and Ted.” Awesome characters that I wish had stuck around longer)

Actually its not explicitly stated he’s dead right? Thats not the problem anyway; I’m thinking he’llbecome pain’s next accesory.

Uuu…a Naruto manga post! Wait, are you doing this from now on or is this just for this one event?

I would love to see more posts on the manga. :)

Why..? When I was reading the manga I was so sad.. not only because I knew he was going to die.. but because of all the emotional lines..his failures and stuff.. and about how you’re remembered when you die. I was actually crying while reading this chapter.. is was so so sad.. *tear* Jiraiya we’ll miss you..

  15. Hinano UNITED STATESon 15 Dec 2007 at 11:31 pm

akon> I typically only post when something major happens. I don’t usually post the manga since it’s readily available to read.

Well if Naruto finds out and becomes consumed by hatred and vengeance at least maybe both he and Sasuke will be able to finally find some common ground.

Oh, he died. I kinda expected that right after Asuma died. But awwwwh~ :(

Also, Kushina looks like Sakura. (And then Kishi adds a twist: they’re related! Gasp. Nooooasdfooooo!1!11!)

    I kid, I kid. xD

It’s indeed a sad part of Naruto that jiraiya has to die, and this came even more as a shock when the Third Hokage or Asuma died.

I suppose Naruto’s fight with Pain will be closer with this piece of shocking news…

um, i’m not sure if someone above commented on Orochimaru, but didnt a portion of his face merge with his medical ninja disciple?

Good chapter. I was more than happy to see some back-story that I’ve surely been waiting for since I was in the womb. One of the only things I like about the Naruto storyline is that characters actually die even if very rarely. It’s sad that one of the most lovable characters is dead but I think it’s essential to get the ball moving…finally.

It’s kind of sad, he was like a father to him…T__T
“when Naruto finds out, I expect him to go full Kyuubi or something” NOOO I DON’T EVEN WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT!! T__T *sob*
