!*@#&%(@#*&-

Published by Hinano at 6:23 pm under Rants & Raves

My fucking gay Vista sound driver went to shit hell and then decided to uninstall itself. Now my computer has no sound.
No sound = I can’t watch anime. I can’t watch anime = I can’t blog.

Hiatus until I get all this shit fixed - and the fact that my Toshiba recovery CD refuses to work isn’t helping things. I hate you Vista. I hate you RealTek and I hate you Toshiba for installing a shitty half assed Taiwanese sound driver into my laptop.

Edit: Somehow while calling Toshiba support the umpteenth driver I installed fixed itself. Back to your regularly scheduled program.

yea my last resort is gonna be to call Toshiba but last time I called those idiots they told me I have to go to an official “store” to get it looked at and all their “official” stores are in bumblefuck and I have no car. IShould just buy myself a new laptop as a birthday present and this time it won’t be a piece of shit toshiba. (God I jsut got this crap like in April too!)

That’s one of the reasons why I use linux, don’t have to deal with non-working stuff, once I get it set up, I can pretty much run it indefinitely if I really wanted to. And my software practically plays everything under the sun as well. I use the more advanced gentoo distribution, but a good newbie friendly one is called ubuntu, default set up is pretty nice. I have XP also installed on this laptop but I never use it, also the acpi driver in it for some reason crashes on bootup so I can’t change display brightness or anything, probably partially because I just installed xp, didn’t really do too many customizations, not worth it since I barely use it anyway. Also vista from what I have heard is pretty bad, I will never accept an operating system that has DRM built into its very foundations futzing things up.

Not sure whether you have tried this, but I would think Toshiba has the same online resources as Dell does (my laptop). If you hit up the Toshiba support site and plug in your laptop model they should have lists of downloads, including drivers, for you to get. So if the drivers off the recovery CD don’t work I would try their support site and see if you can find a sound driver there.

Yeah, Vista is a piece of junk. I refuse to buy/install it until I’m absolutely forced to. And when I am, I’m going to switch full-time over to Linux/Mac and have Vista around ONLY for things like games (if people haven’t wised up by that time and switched over to producing games for UNIX OS’s full time). I do have a suggestion though:
    http://applegeeks.com/comics/viewcomic.php?issue=235

The new OS X release even has a program (Boot Camp) to install Windows XP/Vista on it for a dual-boot setup if you need Windows.

I remember when my cousin’s comp magically uninstalled its sound drive, but that was like, Windows 98! You’d think these sort of things wouldn’t happen in Vista -_- Well, usually when these things happen to me, it means I need to start getting in touch with old friends or try new things. You wouldn’t believe all the wonderful things there are in the world! (yea, sorry for sounding like a slice-of-life anime, I know you don’t like those too much XD) Like, when Kabitzin’s blog was shut down, I was like, “NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!”, so I had to find something else to entertain me. Thats where I found Totali, and realized his fanboygasm-ness for shows like Sketchbook full colorS. So yea, my advice is to BUY A NINTENDO WII AND GET SUPER MARIO GALAXY! THAT GAME IS GONNA BE BUTTER!!!… er…I mean try new things, and just enjoy life :3

If you really need to watch anime, you could always invite some friends and be the voices. FILL IN THE BLANKS! XD Oh yea, that is always an awesome thing to do! Its always fun muting the volume and having Naruto say naughty things to Sasuke!

New laptop as a birthday present? Don’t you mean your cats birthday? ;)

I’ve had a Toshiba laptop before and it was piece of crap. I brought it to the repair shop over 5 times in a 3 year period during its warranty period because the DVD/CD reader kept dying. Then just when the warranty ended, I found the hard drive died on it. That was enough Toshiba for me and decided to stick to Dell. The worse problem from Dell was never as bad as a Toshiba (6 weeks in the shop).

That said, did you buy the laptop with Vista on it or did you buy it with XP and then installed Vista afterwards? I thought I read somewhere on your blog that you did the latter.

And why do you hate Macs? I prefer Windows-based machines, but never had a problem with Apple.

Your post dredged up some of my old PC memories. Ugh. At the dawn of the internet era, I felt empowered and in control of my PC. But now, one wrong turn on the interwab and my PC might get enslaved by the pron masters and the spam underlords.

  16. Hinano UNITED STATESon 04 Nov 2007 at 11:25 pm

XD Yea thats why I always use firefox now in order to at least keep the spam to a minimum.

I bought a laptop with Vista preinstalled cause it was a pretty good deal. I generally never had problems with it but this was just totally random o_o I do see myself buying a new laptop in a couple years though…the graphic card stinks

  17. Darkron PORTUGALon 04 Nov 2007 at 11:48 pm

They will always stink, there is not much of a market for mid-high end graphic cards on laptops since their main purpose is work, not watching movies or play games.

vista’s still not very stable that’s for sure. the direct x ability sometimes shuts off on its own too. apart from some easier searching and cooler designs the novelty wears of very fast so actually xp is still better for now..

  19. Hinano UNITED STATESon 05 Nov 2007 at 12:23 am

my previous computer was on win2k - I loved win2k. The only reason I upgraded is because all these programs i wanted to use weren’t compatible with anything before XP….so I figured in order for this not to happen again..I’d just go right to Vista. Eh I’m just ahead of the game. By mid next year everyone (including that cursed Manga Studio) should be caught up.

  20. Di Gi Kazune MALAYSIAon 05 Nov 2007 at 1:12 am

Oi! Do not abuse my vista! That is why I get a real soundcard. Or at least wait until creative gets their 64bit drivers which they did about the time I decided, lets go from win2k to vista! So far no problems in 3 months except that xerox doesn’t want to release a vista driver for my printer. I used to run Win2k exclusively until IE7. IE7 no like Win2k-tan. T_T

    I still don’t like winxp. I still think it’s win2k with eyecandy.

And to all the mac zealots:
Macs suck. They have no reset button. “Press the restart button” and it hangs even worse… And you have no way of reseting it short of unplugging it. Oh did I mention the goddamn power button won’t work either when it crashes like shit? If you want to wank and complain about the problems vista has, go and sit on the problems Nopard has and the shitting support crapple is giving. Macs have one good points. A fanbase of religious zealots.

PS I used macs before. Obviously they never left a good impression.

And yes, Vista still needs tweaking. It still cannot remember folder preferences long enough which is my main peev.

Laptops are for work only. That’s what mine is for. Pr0nime is for the Vista machine. IRC is on the P3. The laptop is for pr0ning in bed with the wireless… Ooops said too much >_>

:/.. i dont feel like upgrading to vista yet.. still too many problems.. the same thing with leopard.. i tried using vista only to get problem with my hardwares (ie wireless card).. maybe i’ll install it if more games use dx10

XD i love mac.. well.. people have preferences..i like sleek, visually nice os. windows xp with custom apps in attemp to get mac lil nice funtions worked well too. i bought mac several months ago after i use it frequently in my visual lab.. (and the fact that i got a student discount) and it never hangs on me.. yet.. crashes several times but due to the stupid apps (was trying random crap) but i still can kill the applications and press the power button so.. its still ok.

ps: XP trust me im not a fan.. didnt even touch it until i had no other choice and i actually like it.

  23. DreadPirateRyu JAPANon 05 Nov 2007 at 9:04 am

    @Di Gi Kazune
I don’t want to start an OS holy war, but I do wish to say a few things. First, I am hardly a Mac zealot, I’ve only had my mac for a year and have used windows the rest of my life. I do, however, really like my mac.
You talk about problems with Leopard? I say, what problems? I have, basically, 1 problem with Leopard: it stopped recognizing a shared folder on my windows computer (which so happens to be my MAIN computer). Upgrade went smooth as silk, runs smooth as silk, no problems.
As for a restart button, sure, there isn’t one. But if you knew about computers, you would know that ALL computers have a hard power-off if you hold down the power button for a small length of time.

I respond in kind to you with calling you a “M$ Zealot” for not recognizing the problems M$ is having, and have dug themselves into with Windows 10-foot-wall, codenamed “Vista”. XP is the better OS, and the only OS I will recognize from M$ as being good.
(Yeah, ok, I kind of went OS zealot there didn’t I? Guess I just have some strong opinions on OS stuff. Sorry for partially taking over your comment section Hinano)

Sorry to hear that you are having problems, since I enjoy reading your posts.

For what it’s worth, according to Consumer Reports, Toshiba’s tech support is “undistinguished” and that support on the company’s website is better than their phone support. If Toshiba can’t give you satisfactory support, you may want to consider a third party like 1800905Geek, Firedog (Circuit City), Geek Squad (Best Buy), or PC Pinpoint. The latter is probably the cheapest (at $30 per incident).

If you do decide to buy a new laptop, you may want to factor in tech support. According to CR, Lenovo has very good tech support…second to only Apple.

Also, I would suggest buying the highest priced laptop you can afford. I have found that the old saw, “you get what you pay for”, tends to be true for computers. My wife and I purchased our first computer in 1993. We decided to go for a computer which cost 15% more than our initial budget limit. We got 10 years of heavy use out of it and today it is still being used for light online and word processing duties. You could say that the cost is at $230 per year and dropping. It’s replacement was purchased in 2001 (there was a two year overlap) and looks like it will also have a 10 year heavy use life. Although more powerful than its predecessor, it was less expensive, so the cost is already at $400 per year. That same year, I bought a used laptop and I expect to keep it as my primary laptop until next spring or early summer. I will probably buy a new one in time for my China trip in the summer. Its cost will be at $185 per year when it will be replaced. Also, this laptop has survived two 6 foot falls…one in its case and the other outside the case. That latter event nearly stopped my heart, but luckily everything worked when I booted it up…that was 4 years ago. I think once you go below a certain price point, the manufacturer has to make too many compromises with hardware and reliability becomes iffy.

The OS, for the most part, I think is irrelevant. That is personal preference. They all work well enough for their various users. For me, so long as you can get your work (whether personal or business) done with minimal aggravation, then it doesn’t matter what OS I use (Windows, Mac OS, BSD, Linux, etc.).

Anyway, sorry for the long post and I hope you get your laptop problems resolved to your satisfaction soon…

  26. Hinano UNITED STATESon 05 Nov 2007 at 11:49 am

Reason I got a laptop is cause well I’m small and constant carrying of my desktop sucked. Also I wanted something I could always take with me on the train or to the library during my lunch breaks at work.

Don’t get me wrong my laptop does MOST of what its supposed to…but random shit like this does pop up and it’s hard when the drivers are made by some unknown chinese company rather than like microsoft or something.

If the tech world didn’t stop supporting win2k I would have never switched. I loved my win2k it was the best system I have ever used.

    I have Vista but I luckily don’t have these problems…yet. The only annoying thing is when I want to transfer files. It won’t work at times (pretty rare) but if your talking about my Win XP…it had a meltdown today…now I hope nothing of my games (4) and all the stuff on my HDD got lost…man. My XP PC is screwed now. It won’t start up after over heating ugh ;____;

as for a driver. My HDD some times disconnects on my Vista laptop for some stupid reason 0____o

Another solution if this problem comes up again is USB based headphones/speakers. IIRC, they don’t need software drivers for 2-channel audio.

I have had major problems with RealTek drivers as well. It is amazing that sound drivers cause so many problems in comparison to drivers that serve much more complex functions.

  31. Sabrina-Fair UNITED STATESon 05 Nov 2007 at 7:49 pm

You are the 20-something-ith person to have a Vista breakdown this past week. I have decided to wait until most of the bugs are settled before upgrading. My laptop is only 2 years old and my desk top is ancient, but they both use XP.

Every person I know that has upgraded or purchased a new computer with Vista has nothing but complaints. Even the companies I’ve shopped around (HP & Dell) both re-added XP as an option for the operating system because of the Vista complaints.

Glad your problem seems to have corrected itself. I don’t think you could function properly without anime for more than a day or two.

  33. DrmChsr0 SINGAPOREon 05 Nov 2007 at 10:15 pm

The problems most commonly encountered in Vista are
driver faults, DRM software andother miscellanous bugs. Microsoft reminds you that Vista will never crash and, in fact, is extremely stable.

    LOL
