Manga Review: Kaichou wa Meidosama! Vol. 1

So as I mentioned in the previous post I went to Kinokuniya and picked up a new series called “The Student Council President is a Maid”. I’ve been eyeing this damn thing ever since I saw a short preview of it in one of those booklets that they stuff into mangas. This was was in my last volume of Fruits Basket, so as you guessed it’s printed in Hana to Yume. Once again all scans here are done by me, I really don’t know what group if any is scanlating this series. I bought volumes 1-3 so I will do reviews of 2 and 3 further in the week. Anyway the story begins with a violent student council president named Misaki (16 years old), who has to be violent to keep all the boys in line since the school seems to have a shortage of females.

Because Misaki’s mother is weak, she has to take care of her sister and take a part time job that allows her flexible hours since she has student council duties as well as school. The only thing she manages to get is a job as a waitress at a maid cafe :P. Unfortunately one of her classmates, who is also just 1 rank above her in school, happens to find out.

His name is Usui Takumi (17), and apparently he has no interest in girls because he was so popular amongst them that he just got sick of them all. He is mostly found rejecting their confessions. Luckily for Misaki, for some reason he keeps this whole thing a secret, and even cooperates with her. Along with this though he constantly visits the maid cafe she works at and requests for her services. (Not those kind of serivices XD!)

Throughout the book you could tell he definitely has interest in her until eventually he romantically confesses to her. I just love kiss confessions, it’s so wonderfully shoujo! :D The funny part is that in the parts where you think she’s like a damsel in distress and he wants to save her, she actually is pretty damn strong and can take care of herself. I think that’s what appeals to me the most. She breaks out of that “weak shoujo heroine” mold and has some balls to take on nasty cafe otaku. YOU GO GIRL.

Needless to say, I think I am going to enjoy the next 2 books.

    Yea it’s kinda like Ouran but I like it better because it doesn’t have so many guys that it’s hard to pair the main girl up with anybody :D

    Ooooo, do you know if there are any scanlation groups covering this? Or at the very least somewhere where one can download the RAW?

    It reminds me of typical Shoujo … yes, I read chapters of it (some are translated) but it have a lot of shoujo stereotypes and by breaking the “weak shoujo heroine” does not change she is another stereotype, the “strong shoujo heroine” that is not exactly rare.

    Its not bad, its simply that I read it before …

    HAHHA Yeah I’ve read the first two chaps of this. God the premise is so funny, a top boy-hating student taking a job as a maid.
