Kinokuniya opens its doors to my wallet.

Published by Hinano at 1:31 pm under Manga, Unsorted

So this morning one of my Japanese coworkers informed me that Kinokuniya had opened literally 1 block from where I work. I was like whoa already? It turns out they have moved their office from the Rockafeller center and are now renting that space out. The new Kinokuniya is HIROOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIII! (Very spacious.) The first floor is mostly magazines and merchandise such as shirts, pens, phone straps, figures etc.

The 2nd floor consists of MANGA!..and some other books but mostly manga. I like how they have the sections divided. Where it says “MANGA” in English is the english manga, and where it says “KOMIKKU” in katakana is where they have the Japanese manga. Upstairs they also now have a Cafe Zaiya! So if the one next to my building wasn’t enough, I can go buy manga and eat some Beard Papa’s cream puffs while I’m at it! I picked up a new title called “Kaichou wa Meidosama” which I heard was cute/romantic and I’ve been eyeing it for a while. I was tempted to get the whole set of Mamotte Lollipop but I restrained myself and only got the 4th book of the sequel series. I also got Spiral Alive 03 which I’m not too keen on but the art is like a magnet to me ;_;.

Finally I picked up Shugo Chara…volume 4. Wtf I don’t even have 1-3 yet T_T. I had to ask the dude workin there (in broken japanese) if they had any others and while he helped me look he said that because they just moved the books are probably still being ordered. He suggested I come back next week and see if they’re in stock. Well considering this store is now like 10 minute walk away from me, I think I just might come back! Besides until I’ve gotten volumes 1-3 I have no intentions of even opening 4 or I’ll spoil myself rotten. :x

BAD hinano! Now you have to work twice as hard to replace the money you burn!

That said, I’m even worse. I’m a frequent mailorder customer from them to the point that they send me the money catalogues and will specially order in stuff I request. Now to complete the puchimon.

huh? So they’re closing the store in rockfeller center? Where’s the new one?

  3. Hinano UNITED STATESon 23 Oct 2007 at 2:02 pm

    XD I only spent like $33 :X

I wish there was something like that near here xD. Good luck in fighting the temptation to spend all your money =P

Why don’t you change your direct deposit information to just go ahead and put your paychecks into Kinokuniya’s bank account =D? Interesting that they have an English Manga section, but I guess they have the space for it.

They always had one in the previous store, but it was always squashed into like 1 small shelf. Now everything is like really easy to find. Also I like how the English manga is listed alphabetically by title while the Japanese is listed by publisher :P

I’m jealous. If I knew how to read Japanese I would probably be able to order the Japanese volumes instead of waiting patiently for someone to either translate a few chapters or for it to get liscenced. I’m very slowly realising what a loser I am *shakes head*.

Ooo-errr, doesn’t sound good for the wallet. The fact that I have to go well out of my way just to buy manga in English does wonder for my bank balance. I’d hate to think what would happen if somewhere more local to me or my workplace opened up…

We don’t even HAVE a place that sells that kind of stuff where I live, let alone 10 minutes away. Lucky jerk. xD

So their Manhattan store moved…about time. It was way too small. Too bad the old location was awesome as a tourist spot :/

    New York Main Store
    1073 Avenue of the Americas
    New York, NY 10018
    P(212)869-1700

Now I have to figure out how to get there the easiest way…

  11. Hinano UNITED STATESon 23 Oct 2007 at 3:51 pm

It’s like on the corner of 6th and 41st, right behind Bryant Park. The fastest way would be to take the BDFV

P.S. I work next door to Book Off

Faced with a large supply of manga, i could have never resisted. Only reaching flat broke has ever stopped me. D:

Luckily for me, my nearest good supplier is a lot further than 10 minutes away… except twice a year since the London Expo is actually 10 minutes down the road for me =P

Delicious mangas. I like the series :p
    I only have vol. 1 for Shugo Chara and I still need to kick myself and go to the comic store….It’s kind of crappy though. Manga and anime isn’t popular in my country so it’s pretty hard to get my hands on manga’s and anime DVD’s =____=;;

I remember I ordered MeruPuri vol. 1 + 2 and 3 at the comic store but it’s been a year and I still haven’t gotten any. They kept saying “Sorry. The volume isn’t delivered yet” 0___o
I didn’t want to spoil myself with vol. 4 which was the end…..but I got sick of the waiting and got some scans from teh internetz….

man. I’m jealous. That store sounds nice! Wish I could visit it :(
Reading the actual manga is better then some scans imo. Way more satisfactory.

Next door to Bookoff? You must be the luckiest person in the world…

  15. Hinano UNITED STATESon 23 Oct 2007 at 6:23 pm

SI> Ironically last time I went there was to sell books rather than buy any XD I guess I”m trying not to waste money on manga these days so I only buy new/continuing series.

Bento> Someone posted merupuri manga torrent all in english on tokyo toshokan not too long ago. The ending was meh, didn’t like that series as much as I had at first

  16. SI UNITED STATESon 23 Oct 2007 at 6:49 pm

I just want to know, but how much does bookoff pay for sold books? I’m assuming it’s pretty measly.

On an unrelated note, execellent banner.

  17. Hinano UNITED STATESon 23 Oct 2007 at 7:19 pm

    :D Glad you like it
It wasn’t much. I musta given them like 15 books or so and only got like $13.

  18. varisha UNITED STATESon 23 Oct 2007 at 10:31 pm

Oh no, now that I don’t have to choose between Book off and kinokuniya on my once-every-three-months manga expeditions the convenience will make me spend even more o_o. The old location was pretty nice tho, being right down the block from minamoto kitchoan.

  19. Hinano UNITED STATESon 24 Oct 2007 at 3:19 pm

There’s an Asahiya not too far from BookOff as well. I was there today to get my missing Shugo Chara books *_* (and I spent like $35 cause they were special editions @_@)

  20. omo UNITED STATESon 24 Oct 2007 at 4:24 pm

That Asahiya has some cooky CD collection. That said it’s good that I don’t have to walk all the way up to Rockeafeller now :3

Since most of my anime-related money goes to CDs and DVDs, Book-Off basically owns my soul :(

omo> Why haven’t we hung out yet? Lol. Come to the NY anime festival and have a nice boat with me and JP

You may want to go there on November 19, Takehiko Inoue will be there to paint a mural on one of the 2nd floor walls.

  23. Hinano UNITED STATESon 25 Oct 2007 at 10:34 am

Haha that sounds cool except I’m not really a fan of his work :B

  24. mochi UNITED STATESon 25 Oct 2007 at 10:48 am

Neither am I. I am not really interested by sports manga…though his current series about Miyamoto Musashi sounds interesting. I read the version of Musashi’s story by Eiji Yoshikawa which I enjoyed quite a bit. I hear Inoue’s version is a little different.

Still, he has been in the news lately with the innauguration of his scholarship program and now this mural visit.
