Manga Next 2007 Report

Published by Hinano at 10:00 pm under Conventions, Rants & Raves

This year I don’t have a funny 4koma with me and JP so enjoy my rant report instead. In general, for some reason I enjoyed Friday a lot more than I enjoyed Saturday but in general this con sucked more than the ending of Zero no Tsukaima. If you wanna skip the rant you may go right to the photos. As usual click “Manga Next 2007″ on the left. I didn’t take too many because a lot of people from Anime Next were here cosplaying the same thing.

Friday:
I actually took a whole day off work but because it seems the con was pretty much dead until 4 I arrived there around 3:30 or so. They put me in a good spot this year at the alley because it’s right in the middle and people usually have to walk through it to get to the gaming area. I sold like 5 prints pretty quick and that was pretty much it the rest of the night. Didn’t sell any doujinshi (geezus christ would someone buy this shit off me so I can draw a new one? T_T) and until JP came from work I was bored to tears.

Some “events” that happened was the head of the alley first bowed like 3 times to me when he confirmed I was cosplaying Haruhi but later on called me “not worthy” because I don’t know the full dance. Whatever, by the time the full dance came out I was busy fangirling over Kanon or whatever the hell else was airing at the time. No one was oohing and ahing at Otakon 2006 when I did the “partial” dance cause HAROOHI wasn’t licensed. Btw almost everyone who asked me said “HAROOHI” or “HARHI” and it took me a few minutes to realize they actually meant “haruhi”. Wow. :| I got a bunch of good rare cosplays like a group of Higurashi folk and someone going as the Ghost Rider  In the dealers room someone selling stuff went “HARUHI DO THE DANCE!” So I moved my hands a few times of the part I knew and she was so amused she gave me a small pack of tissues.

I’m not really sure what the deal is, but a lot of non-cosplaying girls were walking around with those dollfies on their arms. Is this like the female otaku equivalent of collecting figures? I wonder if they girl fap to them. Wait, nevermind I don’t wanna even imagine that. By 9:30 we decided to pack it up because it was late, dead and frankly I need to get up early Saturday to go to staples and buy paper and ink because my printer is running low and I gotta restock on my prints and business cards.

Saturday:
At this point I have come to the conclusion that Manga Next sucks so all the following will be a fangirl rage (as JP likes to call it) about how much I hated this con. So Saturday morning I get up at like 8 AM restock on my prints, get my shit ready then after breakfast we ran to staples to get paper for business cards and printer cartridges, and they wasted our time by telling us they didn’t have any magenta in stock. Needless to say our trip to the bus station was a marathon and we ran panting all the way there. Although seems like someone had a worst day then us because the moment we got in line some woman a few meters away yelled FUCK! And threw something (I think her cell phone) against the wall.

Once we got to the con setup as usual and I managed to get into my Ayu cosplay. After walking around to see what other new artists were here I came back and disappointed I didn’t see as much good cosplays as I saw the day before. The next 6 hours were just fucking awful. I can’t even count how many people walked by “aww so cute” and “*insert rabid fangirl spazz here”…then walked away. Wtf? Some even asked the price but when I said $5 or $8 (which I know is just SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE) they immediately walked away. Right because clearly those $5 are better spent on a tiny ass box of pocky or better yet spend $15 on a japanese yaoi doujin that you can’t even read. You know wtf is with these kids? They like fuckin squeal and spazz about like nothing. Where do they get the energy? How come I wasn’t so fucktarded when I was that age? What’s this world coming to? :|

Anyway after 6 hours, and a bowl of shrimp lomein I decide to call it quits. My deviantart friend Ivy stopped by and sat with us for a bit so that made it more lively. By 6:30 we packed up to catch the 6:44 bus back to NYC. This was the most ridiculous con I’ve ever been to. Me aside, even the artists around me weren’t selling. I barely saw anyone stop at their tables let alone give money or walk away with items. There was a group of people who were at tables a little bit to my right who packed up like an hour before we did…and frankly I don’t blame them. They were selling shit for a DOLLAR. A FUCKING DOLLAR. Clearly this wasn’t about “good art” it was about “do you have chibis of inuyasha and deathnote buttsecksing?” ^_____^……… :x

Also I forgot to mention we hung out with DS Friday and Saturday XD Sorry I forgot to add you in! We’ll prolly be seeing him at the NYAF.

——————————-
So basically I’ve had it with this shit. I’m not even coming on Sunday. What pissed me off the most is the scammer selling pins next to me using images that she didn’t even draw. She used official images (which she has since taken down) and put them on pins and sold them in bulk. If she was at Otakon she would have been thrown out in 2 hours. Even if it’s not an image she pulled off google, she prolly traced it in photoshop and did the same thing. I’ve seen people selling pins as well of their own creations which is COOL WITH ME, but pulling this kind of shit fucking pisses me off. She prolly made all those idiotic fangirls waste money on illegally made pins instead of ones people spent hard work and time on. Also wearing pins that say “SUGOI” and “KAWAII” and “BAKA” makes you look like a retard.

And that’s what this con was. Fulla retards who like this shit and don’t appreciate quality art. The other annoyance was everyone & their grandma stopped by my table asking us where we go the Chinese food instead of reading the back of the fucking program guide. What the hell do I look like, information desk? I don’t mind when it’s a fellow artist asking, since they’ve been sitting there all day too…but when random people come in and do this yea, I wanna slap them. With that in mind, JP and I have decided to refrain from ever coming to Anime Next or Manga Next again and in fact next year are actually planning to go to Otakon. Sure Otakon is an unorganized mess, however it has more people and that’s basically all I need to have success at the artist alley….as well as avoid assholes like the above.

On a note of other cons me and JP will be attending the New York Anime Fest and have (I have xD) officially decided to cosplay Sekai and Makoto from School Days equipped with captain’s hats, boats and (fake) knives. Anyone who recognizes us wins the internets.

    Boo-Hoo, you didn’t mention me ;_:

    Your post made me rofl!
    So harsh on the fangirls!
Unfortunately true art is overshadowed by simple pleasures

  3. Ashley UNITED STATESon 06 Oct 2007 at 10:53 pm

You should come down to Mechacon one year; then you’ll really hate living.

  4. Hinano UNITED STATESon 06 Oct 2007 at 10:58 pm

DS> Woops! Lemme edit that :P

Noble> Sometimes you gotta be harsh to tell the truth!

Ashley> The fact that I know it would suck makes me wanna spend the money to fly down there even less :P.

  5. Lydia UNITED STATESon 06 Oct 2007 at 11:00 pm

Just looked at your photo albums. HOLY SHIT! Papillon! Hdaodadas; I would have gotten my picture with him. That takes guts to walk around in Papillon’s skimpy attire. XD

I know what you mean about people wanting Inu-Yasha and Death Note buttseckzing art. Fat, yaoi fangirls are taking over the planet. Yeah, I too agree about not going to Manga Next again. You might get devoured by a monstrous, yaoi fangirl.

Yaoi Fangirl: YOU IS NOT DRAWING GAY TAMAKI/KYOUYA ART?!
    Hinano: No.
Yaoi Fangirl: YOU IS CONDEMNED TO THE BOAT.
Hinano: Wtf? (is suddenly beheaded and thrown into a boat)

It’s happened before; it can happen again. D:

OMG girl-fap to dolfies LOLOL. I look forward to hearing how many times you get asked to knife JP.

  7. Ashley UNITED STATESon 07 Oct 2007 at 12:01 am

Haha, you could think of it more as spending money to go to ASHLEY CON, COOLEST CON ON EARTH. I kid, I kid. If anything I’d love to raise the funds to go to any of the big name cons simply to meet everyone as no one lives anywhere near the vicinity of BumFuck Con.

It’s too bad that your weekend went sour. It’s a shame to put in so much effort and get nothing but headaches for it.

You’re a damn good writer, with a very passionate voice in your writing, and you have a lot of energy and promise in your art. Why not do an original manga instead of a doujinsha? I’d buy that.

Better luck with the rest of your weekend -

I wish I could see you two at NYAF. That sounds like comedy gold. Yeah, we need more than enough pictures.

At least Otakon has more than enough people to sell art to, though unless it’s mainstream, you won’t be selling much most of the time.

  10. kiseki gurl UNITED STATESon 07 Oct 2007 at 12:39 am

If you want to sell more stuff, maybe you should start making keychains or some trinket of the like? I noticed at AX that type of thing sold a lot more than prints and doujins.

Are you still selling the prints? If you have a Busou Renkin one I might buy it :D.

Hope you have a better time at NYAF. Tell us if anyone tries to kill JP XP.

The dolfie girls… I wouldn’t say they are figures, cos they cost about 10 times that of even the cheapest figure. Let’s just say they are the pets of the otaku girls.

  12. Di Gi Kazune MALAYSIAon 07 Oct 2007 at 6:39 am

I would love to hug you as kazune hugs karin but then jp would be… jealous.

The situation is that what used to be a niche activity has become mainstream and everyone and their neko and inu wants to have a con. Would love to rant more but work is already causing enough ranting and use of rantenergy so there isn’t much left except for: People don’t put effort into their cosplay work anymore.

I’m confused, señorita. Is this from last yr or this yr? :?

  14. Rednights UNITED STATESon 07 Oct 2007 at 8:41 am

Give that Avatar cosplay a fucking A+, balls IMO. Avatar > So much crap this season.

Anyways .. to many Narutard and Harutards …. kuddos to the Haibane Renmei + Pizza Hut Box, that’s pretty much it.

  15. Hinano UNITED STATESon 07 Oct 2007 at 9:31 am

Lydia> In the first pic that Lust guy bent down to make it look like he’s giving pappillon head x_X I deleted that one tho :x

Ashley> Well if you can afford to go to Otakon next year we may see you there!

Link> My print binder was FULL OF NARUTO. Clearly that isn’t the issue lol.

kiseki> I never did any Busou Renkin fanart unfortunately. It seems like making keychains or pins or w/e is more expensive and if you don’t sell them it’s even worse. I was selling mostly prints and doujinshi that if I don’t sell it’s not as bad in my opinion.

    Digi> Well I for a fact cannot sew, nor do I have a sewing machine..so I usually tend to cosplay outfits that I can put together from storebought items ^^;;

ronin> I believe this year is 2007 no?

    Rednights> Haha I was a harutard ;^;

  16. Sabrina-Fair UNITED STATESon 07 Oct 2007 at 9:37 am

I’m sorry your suffered, but it reads like a dream :)

I have no idea why “buttsecksing” is so popular in any form, but it’s been in like half of the new Manga I’ve bought so I guess it sells. I think I mentioned this here before about a huge flame-war on a blog about Ino & Sakura and a cucumber…. it’s over my head.

Your costume was perfection and you pulled off the character well. I hope you have a better experience at your next event.

  17. Di Gi Kazune MALAYSIAon 07 Oct 2007 at 11:40 am

That is why you just cosplay as Karin in ordinary outfit. All you need are those hairties >_>

  18. Ronin PHILIPPINESon 07 Oct 2007 at 2:57 pm

I believe this year is 2007 no?

Oh ok. I was confused because of the link name right here:

    … and I thought I was reading a wrong entry. ^^

So there is a Con in NYC! I guess I’ll go to that one, you inspired me to go just for the fact that I’d see “Makoto and Sekai”.

But I also haven’t been to a con in years and since I’m finally in New York…

Casual anime fangirls are pretty annoying… aren’t they.

  20. Hinano UNITED STATESon 07 Oct 2007 at 9:24 pm

Casual ones? Did you mean rabid ones?

  21. Di Gi Kazune MALAYSIAon 08 Oct 2007 at 12:32 am

I could say you could go as like… the one in the banner? >_>

    “JP… time to take your meddywuggums~~” :p

  22. Shadowgorath UNITED STATESon 08 Oct 2007 at 1:17 am

Wow! Thanks,! Your photo album is the first one that I’ve found that has a picture of me in it, in the Papillon costume. I didn’t have a camera on me, so I sadly couldn’t get any pictures, and this is the first one I could find, since I didn’t get to take many pciture.

Security made me put on more clothes, after like 10 minutes. :[
    But, seriously, awesome album.

  23. Shadowgorath UNITED STATESon 08 Oct 2007 at 1:21 am

By, the way, sorry to comment twice in a row, but you said you had more pictures of me with the person in the dress. If you haven’t already deleted them, would you mind sending them to me?
Any pics will be appreciated. Thanks!

  24. Orbitzz83 UNITED STATESon 08 Oct 2007 at 1:56 am

It’s a good thing you were able to cosplay as Ayu before all the fangirls get in on the action, considering that Kanon just got licensed a couple of weeks back =). By the next con, people will be going “Uguu!” left and right ;-)

  25. Hinano UNITED STATESon 08 Oct 2007 at 8:18 am

Shadow> Your cosplay was awesome! :D Unfortunately the photo I have up is the only one I have because the others all came out blurry so I deleted them :(

Don’t believe Hinano, she’s probably getting ready to print those pics to sell at the next con she goes to. $$$$$

  29. Shadowgorath UNITED STATESon 08 Oct 2007 at 6:42 pm

Ah, I see, Hinano. however, thank you so much for putting up a pic, though; it’s one of the only one I’ve been able to find.

    Lmao, Kabitzin.
