Congradulations Singaporeans! You’ve made some ODD news.
Looks like all
the hubub about Odex has reached Yahoo’s Odd News section (which I read every morning btw.) I haven’t been following the whole Odex thing as it doesn’t really affect me but I found it funny when it actually made the news over here. Original article can be found here.
A protest action by a group of Singaporeans with Japanese anime figurines such as the 5-inch tall Ultramen, robots and monsters with placards met some real-life police in the city-state. A handful of fans of Japanese anime had turned up at a Singapore public park on August 25 with armfuls of the toys to protest against a clampdown on Internet downloading of anime material by Singapore animation distributor Odex.
The incident was not reported in the local press, but pictures and accounts have started circulating on many blogs and political Web sites. (http://textfiend.net/zerohero/?p=454).
“The police didn’t stop us from what we wanted to do. But their being there was enough to intimidate,” the event’s organiser — who only wanted to be known by his online moniker Zer0 — told Reuters by telephone. He added that police — who had four anti-riot vans at the scene — also took down the anime fans’ particulars and that they were filmed by plainclothes policemen. A police spokeswoman said she could not immediately comment. Public protests are rare in Singapore, where outdoor demonstrations are banned and any public gathering of more than four people requires a permit.
I love how they refer to figures as “toys”
Were any of you crazy Singaporeans at this protest? Share your stories!

I would call those things toys, I can’t really think of better term.
I can assure you I was at church when that happened.
What if I say I was there?
Wow…that is weird. And I can’t believe I missed it despite residing in Singapore.
DRM> repenning for your loli sins?
V> thats awesome share your side of the story!
Lol, Zer0 is my friend in real life. Now you see why Singaporeans are so frightened of the police! But seriously, public protests of all forms are strongly discouraged here by the government.
ah… i heard of this.. haha… i know we will make news with this whole thing -.-. Btw i added you to my link. i dint realised i did not add you =P
Thats nothing. It even hit Reuters and they called Zer0.

That’s the same article I posted
zzz so enviouse of all ur other country i’m living in sg… fuck it man the govt… if i was osama i would bomb the singapore govt into pieces… some of u might say that i am a asshole.. but think!!! man!!! if we get caught dling animes even UNLICENCED ones we’ll get fine S$5000 which is around US$2500 juz because we want entertainment!!! screw the odex company… they say support original say no to piracy… and the odex comapny which is giving us the “ORIGINAL” vcd.. sux like shit… u should buy some a check it out ur self… the original is 100 times worst than the dled ones… first!!! the subtittle translation are tottally off… SECOND… THE WHO VIDEO QUALITY IS DAMM BLURRED AND IN SOME ANIME CASE.. IT EVEN GOES OUT OF THE SCREEN SO U’LL HAVE A PART OF THE VIDEO INSIDE THE SCREEN CANNOT SEE!!!! !@%!@$#!^%#$%@%!@
so how the tell are we suppose to support the “ORIGINALS” if they give us quality like this… in sg.. around 80% of anime fans are boycotting the odex not buying anything from them sooo shld’t have to worry abt it my dear singapore friend!!!!! the company will go bankrup in juz a year!!! i sincerly hope FROM THE BOTTEM OF MY HEART THE COMPANY FOLDS UP AND THE BOSS JUMPS DOWN FROM THE BUILDING
AAARRRRGH CURSE ODEX! I can’t believe I missed the action even though I’m in Singapore. o_o And yeah, Singapore’s pretty lame when it comes to anime. You ain’t seein’ Higurashi, or Kamichama Karin, School Days or any of that stuff here. Only Pokemon and old anime. >_> That’s why watching them online is the only choice we have.
And calling them toys is so wrong! > > Selfish blokes.
Boss has a family and is a typical shounen fanboy with an amazing acute mind and perfect command of english. With such an elite ODEX boss, how can we not be happy?
Huh, why are action figures not toys? Singaporeans are such a disgrace!! Right Hinano?
Heheh, hilarious! Now what woulda been a sight to see is if they made little picket signs for their figurines as well, or all dressed up like the chars themselves. In any case, they accomplished their goal… the company’s gotta be pretty embarrassed by all the negative publicity.
actually i’d be more concerned about the rapid degenerationn into stupidity.
u mean the rapid regeneration of greed in the company’s money brain…
Its not a toy … also that figure is not of a female character.
(Was I the only one that caught that?)
hahas.. that was pretty funny.. din know that although i live here.. talk about irony..
i think the whole issue is dragging out pretty badly.. n i got the mindset that no1 wins against authority.. after all i do live in singapore -.-;;
mmm cute traps… we need a jun doll!
August 25th? I think I was sleeping off jet lag at the time. Otherwise I would have joined in the distinctly Singaporean trait of gawking at the spectacle.
Hi there,

She’s one of the girls who turned up and helped me put the figures together
Zer0> Ooh! The man himself! Thanks for the link! And hey nice job man I seriously applaud you. I don’t know what it’s like but sounds like ODICKS are being a bunch of nazis!
Hiya
hmm seems like the police is too free and got bored, they should bring their own riot police/van action figure to fit into the theme lol.
This whole odex issue is just…arg watever, crappy quality or not i dont know….since i never got my hands on their products.
Bad quality is one thing, i think another problem then contributes to their low sales is most probably also due to “invisibility” from the public for the past several years and not wholly on downloaders.
