What the fuck is wrong with liking PRETTY characters?
I kept saying I wouldn’t write my rants on here but I think some people like that so I guess I will anyway. It started out because Anime Next finally picked the winner of their mascot contest. Yes I entered, no I didn’t win nor did I make the finalists. Yea I was a bit down however, what really pissed me off is WHO they chose as the winner. It’s one thing when someone I admire get chosen whose art I feel is superior, however the pic they chose was incredibly ugly and what makes it worse, is there are two runner ups which deserve to have won instead…and why? Because I think they are not only better drawn, but the character looks like a PRETTY FEMALE ANIME MASCOT which I feel should be the “IDEAL” form of all anime mascots.
After all, if we wanted ugly anime mascots, we could all just stick to watching whatever shit they air on Nickelodeon these days.
Aside from the fact that the drawing is…well pretty badly drawn, the character itself LOOKS LIKE A MAN. Women who look manly, or what society calls “dykes” (and they ALSO call themselves proudly it appears), are free to look like that….HOWEVER when it comes to pretty/moe/whatever anime masscots I don’t FEEL they are the ideal choice!! If Japanese people loved the way Japanese look, why do most of their anime characters have huge eyes and hair color of everything but black? (Sure we have black haired beauties nowdays but look at the cast of Tenshi ni Narumon.) Their “IDEAL” is of the westerners with big eyes and non-black hair.
Even now you look at any anime/game store in Japan, do you see a big butch woman in overalls flexing her arm going “WE CAN DO IT!” or do you see a loli with big eyes and purple hair going “Oniichan~?”
Yes it’s chauvinistic, but that’s just the way Japan is, that’s the way anime is, and if you like anime, you typically AGREE with this because that is the “current standard” of anime. Until the day where butch women become a moe, dykes on bikes is not my idea of a cute anime mascot.
After all this said & done, I have this annoying as shit fat yaoi fangirl. Yes she’s a FAT YAOI FANGIRL (she has all 3) bitching at me for “hating on lesbians” and being “chauvinistic” because I want only pretty feminine girls to be mascots and that I need to get “out of the 1950’s”. I told her idiotic brain that in the 50s people covered up the fact that they were gay or they were shunned from society and that in the present day, people will wear traits of a certain “idea” in order to show themselves as being that “idea”. Like how the “dykes on bikes” all shave their heads, wear wife beater shirts and leather jackets. If they didn’t want people to “judge” them, they’d be just like in the fucking 50s, wearing frilly dresses, combing their hair into the same hairstyle as their mom & grandma and dating the captain of the football team…while during the night they’d sneak out their window with their “girlfriend” and do things you may have seen in Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito.
So seriously, don’t give me that “equal rights” shit in anime. Anime comes from Japan, where women are treated like pretty office lady servants who make their male counterparts happy by smiling and serving tea…until they get married and stay home with kids for the rest of their lives…because if they dare to come back to work, the unmarried women will shun with with jealousy (that is if they’re even hired back in the first place.)
In the end, this was all over the fact that I prefer a CUTE mascot, or even a NICELY DRAWN PRETTY ONE, over an ugly one who looks like a man. So the moral of the story is, I hate yaoi fangirls.

mmmmmm tasty yamibou…. Hazuki x Hatsumi~~~
Hmm, I thought FYGs liked the more feminine characters (since they like their boys as such).
And I agree, more than what is ideal or not, the art first has to be aesthetically pleasing, which the winning mascot unfortunately isn’t.
It took me two reads to figure out your post is a troll. You got me! Well done!
Hm…while I like some things about it (being able to pose a character always impresses me, since I’m not very good at that myself) but yes, yes I do not think it’s a very pretty character either and it’s not drawn in the way a mascot character should be. The Artist need to work on his faces, coloring & backgrounds.
However, I did not feel that the runner ups was really appealing either, even if the last one seems like the most obvious and right choice. : ]
you need to post the pics, geocities hates them.
they’re not showing up for you?
It says in geocities that the bandwidth for the images has been exceeded. Zzzz
I laughed at this so much ^_^.
Kudos for mentioning Yamibou. I can’t seem to find your entry anywhere, but I agree totally that the winning picture encapsulates everything that is wrong with western imitations of Japanese anime.
Thank god I didn’t encourage love to enter that O_o.
Looks like we have to fight to even get good art noticed. Stupid cartoon network with their brainwashing and American ideals.
And not all FYFs are that bad… ^_^
Weird it still loads ok for me, maybe cause I have it in my cache or something
Yuribou> I thought of your blog actually and almost said “yuri” instead of Yami
My entry isn’t on there since I didn’t even make finalists….but because I saw 2 finalists who were as good if not better than my drawing, I was upset that rather than THEM deserving the win, an ugly americanized sheman drawing was chosen instead.
I thought I’ve seen those type of drawings on a site where it is dedicated mostly to lesbian pulp fiction novels of the 1950’s to the 1970’s.
It’s in your cache!
LET THE HATE FLOW THROUGH YOU!
Ohhh this was a joke (right?) I was about to say, “Dykes are freakin cool you can’t hate on em like that” well not really but something like that
you had me laughing insanely with that Dykes on Bikes cover picture, you are so awesome for just having that picture there.
what you said is 100% true!
do they not feel confident on the way the do?? if so that’s sad.
I can’t see the images in your link, but I’ll take your word for it that the winner’s work was bad and/or out of character for anime.
But Nickelodeon’s animation or artists aren’t bad at all. They aren’t anime, but they definitely don’t suck. In fact, I got my ass kicked in this contest by Nickelodeon artist Jill Friemark, who is pretty damn good. Hell will freeze over before I have that level of ability.
Finally that Dykes on Bikes picture isn’t moe by conventional standards, but I wouldn’t mind being able to draw stuff like that.
While that Jill person has pretty good art, I don’t find the american animation style appealing. I won’t say its “ugly” since thats the style but we’re talkin about anime mascots here….who need to be cute, big eyes etc…this character looked like she had a cock bulge in her suit.
On that I agree with you. An anime mascot should be moe.
We disagree on the subject of American animation I see. But if I tried to argue further it’d be just as pointless as that time with Pote-
(runs away)
It’s horrible!!!!
Ah. The pictures are up again. D; I think out of all of those images, Xen should have won. I like his/her art style the best out of all of those.
Dyke on a bike. I see nightmares tonight.
It’s certainly an inferior mascot in general to the ones for cons like Anime Boston or Connecticon. The very fact that it’s some kind of high-tech, GitS-influenced cyborg woman probably makes that type of mascot illustration inevitable.
A Japanese children’s book featuring characters with small eyes and black hair. Still very cute.
But that’s not really “anime” in my eyes
Is something like Char an acceptable anime mascot? Char. THE RED COMET. (In case you weren’t sure which one).
I might be the only one here, but I actually like the winning submission. Not the first picture cuz the face looks kinda messed up, but the one of the character on the red bike and the other one where the cloak reflects the background. They’re both really well drawn.
And while Xen’s submission would seem to be the obvious choice for some people, to me, it lacks originality and fails to stand out. I mean it’s cute and all, but it looks like every other moe character I’ve seen. Nothing memorable at all.
The pictures finally showed up for me. Man, she looks like a fucking furry.
RISE UP. RESIST. ELIMINATE THE FURRY MENACE!
And Xen should’ve won IMO.
>>JL
I dunno, I’ve always thought that that’s pretty much the point.
So then some ytmnd guys can make a joke of “all look the same”.
More seriously though. It’s a mascot for an anime convention, the only way anyone’s going to remember it is if it had a steel pipe bulging out it’s stomach.
I’d prefer more realistic anime characters, but that’ll never happen.
People don’t like normal looking females anymore.
They prefer the skinny bitch D-cup purple haired big eyed 17 year old anime girl who acts like she’s 4.
But, good thing is, they’re not real.
So…hah!
hahahaha!
You’re limited to only real girls now!
Dundundun.
n_n
Hey newsflash: I never said I wanted real girls to look like that. Way to read the post genius.
Er dont you mean obsessed yaoi fangirls? cause saying yaoi means you hate all and not all of us fans are like that, and to tell you the truth i havent seen any yaoi fangirls dislike yuri lots of them like yuri to nowadays.
its ren-ai (hetero) the have the problem is so watch what your saying! because yaoi’s cool.
but i agre on the manly looking female thing *shudders* i like pretty boys their the best, cute female mascots are ok to but to many of them around.. thank the lord for Aya. XD
I agree that the winner is not very attractive or feminine, but I looked at the runners up. They are very “generic” - they don’t have their own personality and just look like generic anime girl with no distinguishing features. Out of the choices, I would have chosen the winner because it is more unique and has more spark and personality.
