Manga Review: Sugar Sugar Rune Volume 7

Published by Hinano at 5:53 pm under Manga, Sugar Sugar Rune

I went to Kinokuniya today for my monthly (?) manga pickup. I’ll be doing reviews of all the books I picked up starting with this. So anyway volume 6 last left off where Duke finally turned back to his human form. As usual Anno-sensei made him a bishie…and he also appears to be Cinnamon’s brother. Wait wut? Does that make him Chocola’s uncle?? It wasn’t mentioned but isn’t that the obvious thought? I didn’t see her screaming OJIISANN!?! more than she was going “TELL ME ABOUT MY MOM!!!” I feel like there’s some sort of a hole here. The book inside included a color illustration on the first page shown above.

So then when Duke (Who we now call by his real name which is stupid as hell - Powaville) finally spills the beans Chocola finds out…

…that Glass (the evil bad guy in case you forgot) is actually her father…not Vanilla’s.

So now Chocola is like “omg what if he’s Pierre’s dad too?? Does that make us siblings? Is that why we hung out together as kids??” She wants to tell Pierre but she’s too busy being in love with him to talk to him about this. Before I jump on the EWW INCEST bandwagon the same thing happened in Marmalade Boy and they ended up not being siblings so until I have concrete proof I’ll leave it be. xD

So then the current teacher decides to get married and quit her job so one of the bad guys from the bad kingdom replaces her. He ends up trying to get the noir hearts from everyone with Chocola & Vanilla trying to stop him. During the school play Chocola plays Red Riding Hood..but this guy creates a real rabid wolf which he took from the magic world. It starts to attack Chocola but no one’s there to save her because Uu and Pierre are busy fighting over her ^^;;

Uu gets so jealous that he develops a noir heart himself x_x; Actually in part of the manga I got the impression that Uu was in kahoots with the bad guys but afterwards it didn’t seem that way. Weird.

So anyway Pierre comes up and saves Chocola but in the process gets a really big noir heart…Chocola tries to save him by stealing it…but apparently it ends up killing him O_o.

So after lots of tears Chocola realizes that he’s not “dead” and it may be possible to save him. Unfortunately the only person who may know the answer…is Chocola’s dad in the bad kingdom. ^^; Uh so now Chocola, Vanilla, Blanca and Duke are off to go there.

I forgot to mention how Powaville visit Queen Candy and flirts with her and when her guards come by he kisses her and disappears. WHoa wtf? XD CHocola’s uncle is hitting on Vanilla’s mom. So anyway after the group is in the underworld, a cat comes with them - that cat is probably Chocola’s mom because Queen Candy said she was turned into a tsukaima after everyone found out that she had a baby with Glass. During the trip Blanca is turned into her real form. (Chocola thought she was a grandma and Powaville thought she was a homo xDDD) Her real name is Ruby.

So during their little trip it starts to get dark and difficult to walk through because they lose energy…then Chocola starts thinking all these lovelove thoughts of Pierre and that creates a “magical light” which creates a path for them to follow. LOL CHEESE. So then Chocola’s like….

Whoa wait a minute? Since when does Vanilla like Uu? I noticed at the beginning of the book where she blushed when Uu said she’d be more appropriate for a “Snow White” role. Also when they were going to the underworld and Chocola said Vanilla must get disqualified, Vanilla said she doesn’t care because she wants to save the one she loves. I didn’t wanna jump the gun but the damn thing blasted through my head with a WTF sound. Wtf come on why now? First she had this jealous crush on Pierre. She had like NO interaction with Uu as far as romance goes and all of a sudden she’s like “I LOVE UU!!” Bah! Blasphemy! :x

The volume pretty much ends there. Next one looks pretty exciting and will hopefully be out soon since I’m behind on my SSrune anyway.

I love this manga! Chocolate & Vanilla are both so cute.

I’m only up to chapter 5. But there is no way this series can be spoiled for me. I love the artwork as much as the characters. I’ve never seen the anime, I don’t know if it’s any good or if it’s available in America yet; but I’d buy it.

the anime had a lot of filler episodes and had its own “original” ending so I prefer more story in the manga :)

It’s odd when they do that. I watched Full Metal Alchemist and then heard that the manga was different; the good thing is that so far I’m liking the manga, but it’s vastly different than the anime. Lust alone is just a jarring revelation, and gluttony… sheesh.

I meant to write volume five not chapter five. I was reading some Harry Potter stuff on another site and chapter got stuck in my mind. I’ve never read Harry Potter, and I’ve decided I never will. Or watch the movies either. It’s odd to see people in their fifties discussing a book meant for 8 year olds.

I wonder what I’ll look like in 30 years, pining for Ah! My Goddess… so I shouldn’t talk. :P

    If I’m lucky I’ll age like Vanilla’s Mom. :)

I’m not into the whole Harry bandwagon either.
JP said its like Naruto with wizards instead of Ninjas and you have the same hptards who wanna make Draco & Harry buttsex like Sasuke & Naruto

The anime has its own “ending”. The similarities between the manga and the anime start dwindling right around ep. 42 “Chocolat and Pierre’s adventure” which takes place in the last chapter in volume 5, and through half of volume 6. The episode goes completely off track, with Chocolat & Pierre escaping ‘The Forgotten Path’ in some really random way.. (end up in their consecutive homes instead?).. and it just kind of goes down hill from there. Don’t get me wrong, I love the anime.. but they were obviously pressed for time and decided to end the anime quickly.. I haven’t read volume 8, but i’m really hoping it has a less cheesy ending than the anime.

PS- I can only understand very little japanese.. but between having read the manga.. and reading the mini summaries here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sugar_Sugar_Rune_Episodes

…i got the gist of it all.

Thanks for the spoilers! I got my hands on only four volumes of SSR and now I’m searching the Internet, looking for spoilers! :105: I can’t wait to read other volumes! Whatever, thanks a lot!
