Anime Next - Day 1

Published by Hinano at 9:52 pm under Conventions

Alrighty since I basically go back to my apartment every day after the con I will bring you the latest (and not the greatest) report from my miserly artist alley point of view. So being a non hikkikomori I had work all day and left at 3 PM to get to the con by 4. First thing I did after picking up my badge (and explaining to the man that change of addresses are on the BACK of the driver’s license) is head over to the artist alley and check in my prints for the art auction. For those who don’t know yet I am auctioning the following pieces of work:

1. The Seasons of Key
2. Winter Wonderland
3. Sakura, Hinata & Ino
4. On a Leash
5. Tainted Innocence
6. Kinomoto Sakura
7. Violent Love

In addition I am selling the following prints at my table:
1. Gotcha
2. Ponytail

I’m also selling my doujinshi (see doujinshi page) and this evening I sold 2 of each print and 2 doujinshis. Also a few cosplayers walked by including one from Dai Mahou Touge. I hate that show but at least I know the show and the girl cosplaying was so happy I actually did. Obscure animes ftw! I saw a couple Haruhis and got a photo of one of the Mikurus. (Pictures coming Sunday)

The one thing that irritated me was the girl next to me selling millions of buttons. I got nothing against button sellers except the fact that all the designs on the buttons are NOT her own. She didn’t like “draw a picture” and make it a button. She took pictures like THIS and put them on a button. Excuse me but isn’t that illegal? That’s like me taking an official Haruhi scan, tracing it in illustrator and selling it a print. Uh no.

While my table mates were gone most of the time (either to dinner or to get their wallets drained at the dealer’s room) I had a long chat with Terry, one of the board members at Otakon. He’s been staffing he says since 2004. We had a whole discussion about how organized/disorganized cons get and how in 2004 the L’arc thing made it really hard to control the Japanese who came from Japan to see them…mainly because of the language barrier. We also discussed the infamous “Do It Yourself Bukkake” panel that was a total print goofup and ended up being the most popular panel at the con because all the perverts crawled out of the woodwork. So that was cool since I never really ever got to meet or talk to any of the people behind Otakon, despite going to the con for 3 (even numbered) years.

I met up with a fellow blogger DS as well (and he got to meet JPmeyer as well who arrived really late that he was only at the con for about 10 minutes :P). We went to get dinner at 7:45 only to get a phone call from my table mates telling me that the alley closes at 8 :| Lame. So we went to their hotel afterwards to pick up our stuff and went back home. I ended up ditching the Karaoke contest cause well it was after work, and I was more in a “lets make money from art” mood than “let’s be a nerdy otaku singing jpop songs”. For some reason cons used to always excite me to do multiple things at once …but ever since I’m doing the whole artist alley thing..it’s like a totally different perspective on everything.

More coming tomorrow when I’m actually at the con for more than 4 hours.

Hey! You’re going to this convention too? Wanna meet up there? I’m also going there with a few friends of mine. We were originally thinking of going as Bleach’s shinigami’s, but we didn’t have the time. So instead, try to look for some hollows in masks but dressed in plain 21st century cloths. Lame I know. Haha…

Baka> Look for me at the artist alley, I’ll probably be there 80% of the time, Saturday I’m cosplaying as Shippuuden Sakura.

Kabitzin> Thanks XD More to come tomorrow!

DS>WE picked up our stuff at their hotel room =P

vk> Nah I’m not really into their music style (they remind me too much of L’arc which I’m not too hot about either.)

    Heya!

Just connecting with the people I met at Anime Next - was a pleasure to meetcha!

Saw you mentioned our chat, too bad I didn’t get a chance to tell you how those same five million japanese fangirls nearly trampled me to death… Maybe next year. ;)

    By the way, I’ve been staffing since 1999 actually.. 2004 was when I was con chair. ^_^;
