Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - 01
Hey guys welcome back to our Higurashi lineup! I remember how last year we sat there discussing what REALLY happened and how I sat there for an hour with Jim Breen’s dictionary trying to figure out WTF they were talking about! Well thankfully this time most of the discussion is related to what they talked about in season 1 so hopefully I didn’t miss anything as 95% of the episode was spent on…talking. Boy the fansubbers are gonna get a kick outta this one! Also make note that I’ve revived my Higurashi category so all posts from season 1 and 2 will be in it (so for those of you new to the site/series can check those out.)
So as far as the opening goes it’s sung by the same artist as the one for season one but…well I gotta admit the season 1 song really had that creepy mood yet an addictive beat. For some reason I’m not too hot with this one although I like the ending chanter thing. The ending theme is alright too. If you notice there’s a new character not previously seen, who by now hard core gamers would know is “Hanyuu” (Thanks for correcting me) I don’t really know her deal, someone once said she was bad, then said she was good, then said Takano was the one behind it all. *shrug*
So anyway the episode takes place 30 years later and Akasaka Mamoru, the detective who is now probably like 57 comes back to Hanamizawa once again. There he meets up with Ooishi who I guess is like in his 60s or early 70s at this point. (Man they all look like ugly oyaji!! Akasaka was hot last season :() They basically discuss the whole alien thing and how everyone got a virus and if they left the village they’d die…hence why the whole rule was created that if you “leave the village you will face Oyashiro-sama’s curse.” See my episode 25 summary for all the details on this. Also most of Hinamizawa’s dump has been filled with concrete at this point. I think underneath are all the bodies?
It appears Rena is back…and she is the only one who isn’t dead so it seems. Ooishi once again pressures her (he tends to do that) making her freak out and grasp her head. She then snaps out of it and says she recalls that at some point Rika was not the “rika” that she knew. She tried to stab her with a syringe but Rena sorta “retaliated” and Rika just said “well doesn’t matter eventually you’ll die with this village anyway.” Also they discussed Takano’s 34 people list? There was 34 people named Takano Mio? Something of the bizarre sort surrounding her is probably what this series will focus on. Also I guess this series will just be “flashback” mode since we’re 30 years into the future.
Upcoming Attractions: Guess what. There is none. Not even a title. :<

Yea….recap episode with two guys talking for 18 minutes….after watching this I was so burnt out I didn’t even want to write about it. Next week should be a blast…hopefully.
Damn, I really need to see the first season
That’s because you are spelling it wrong. It’s “Hanyuu”.
Sorry for the double comment.
Uhhh… no. One of Takano’s notebook ended up being known as “File 34″. It’s assumed that the 34 comes from Takano’s name (Mi-yo).
Ah thanks for correcting me, that is why I always like the HIgurashi discussions..people who actually played the game come here and tell me spoilers!
Ahhh. This is, like, the show I am excited about. Ha, ha. All I know about Hanyuu is that she goes, “Au, au, au, auauauauauauauauauauuuuu…”
USO DA!
sorry had to wrote it anyways i’m actually looking foward to seeing this series again with all the psychotic loli goodness
=3 I cannot wait to watch this! For the summer season, the only show i am keen on watching and discussing is this, and I want to get my watch soon. ;_; i wanna blog about it.
Anyway, nice entry, Hinano glad that i can build my anticipation here
Hinano, I’ve checked wiki and it only says the title of this episode as “Reunion” (”Saikai” [サイカイ]). Probably it could or could not be the first part of the Yakusamashi-hen (Disaster Awakening Chapter).
When I think of Reunion I was hoping we’d see more than just…Rena and the cops ^^; I’ll have to go back to Wikipedia to read more about these chapters cause I kept thinking it was gonna “continue” where season 1 left off
Is it possible to dive into the second season without seeing the first (and not be totally lost)? I’m kind of interested, but … ^^;;
I can’t take Akasaka seriously when he mentions Rika~ He has that whole dirty lolicon thing going for him now that he’s a decrepit old man :
After seeing this episode, the way how Akasaka told about the village’s dark side and other incidents very convincingly, as well as Rena’s thought about Rika’s big secret.
Senna> I wouldn’t recommend it. At least read my summaries of season 1, maybe that’ll make it easier XD
おっ、2期はじまりましたか!レビュー楽しみにしてます。

Are they just making all this “30 years in the future” stuff up? Which arc is it supposed to be? Certainly not Matsuribayashi-hen right?
I was really hoping they’ll jump straight into the 3rd answer arc for the 2nd season. But concluding the 2nd answer arc did answer a lot of questions. Here’s hoping for some action next week.
At least now the budget is going into animating Higurashi rather than on Jigoku Shoujo now. The graphics look much better.
Btw, does anyone find Hanyuu’s face a little plump? I prefer the character design for her in the PS2 game.
I think most of the faces got plumpier in this version…well at least they dont look like starving african children now
Argh! Before anyone gets any more confused…
Think of “Reunion” as episode 27 of the first series. It’s more or less the last episode of Tsumihoroboshi-hen. The only difference from the games to here was that Rena lived. Rena only lived here because they needed to put in the Rena/Rika scene in the trailer.
This was a TIPS that was unlocked after you played through Tsumihoroboshi-hen. So you get the feeling of “YAY! Happy end! …wait…what’s this? An extra TIPS? Demon’s Script? wtf…..NO! NONONONONO!!! DAMMIT!”
Next week is Yakusamashi-hen chapter 1: Onigikko (or something like that. Zombie Tag is the translation I believe). My guess is that it’s going to have the other TIPS from Tsumihoroboshi-hen reguarding Rika. It might also get into the Rule X, Y, and Z explanation from the prolouge of Minagoroshi, since that might not make it into the right chapter, due to the fact that the anime doesn’t really like monolouges.
Also, animation has improved so much. Sakuga quality gets a thumbs up from me. The character look much more proportionate now.
chrno> Plz come back here every week and tell me spoilers :):):):)
Also, I believe the next episode previews are on the official site. It’s dark Rika and Hanyuu talking with scenes of the anime behind.
I wonder why did they didn’t put this past episode as the very last episode from season one? I would consider this one as an OVA, but nobody is perfect.
By the way, I only like the first 39 seconds of the song in the opening credits. Don’t ask me why. I just like it.
This episode really left me disappointed. Hopefully next week’s will be greater.
kojioe> You won’t be disappointed on the next one, it will be the first chapter of Yakusamashi-hen.
chrno> It’s Oni-gokko (Demon Tag or Playing Demons).
Hinano> Even though Yui Horie is the new seiyuu in this anime, but when Hanyuu speaks, she sounds like Suzu from Nagasarete Airantou, but more childish, which Horie voices both Suzu and Hanyuu.
*yawn* I watched this episode earlier this evening and it was so excruciatingly dull…surely it can only get better from here.
if already said, ohwell.
BUT this was basically a conclusion to the last arc of the first season. It was also used to fill in all the gaps DEEN left out, and explained some TIPS from the game. The rel new arc starts tomorrow.
