Hanazakari no Kimitachi E - 01
So I decided I’ll blog this drama because it feels like a mix of Nobuta wo Produce meets Hana Yori Dango (not to mention it contains the two main actors from each.) This drama airs on Tuesdays but because Tuesday is a massive anime day I’ll probably be rolling this back to Wednesday bloggage. I never really got on the HanaKimi bandwagon when the manga first came out so I know nothing about the story other than “A girl who likes some guy enough that she pretends to be a boy to transfer to his all-boy school.” Needless to say much of this episode confused me in all sorts of ways.
Our heroine, or should I say “hero” Mizuki was a big fangirl of this guy (whose name I promptly forgot) played by Oguri Shun that used to be a famous high jumper. I guess she “loved” his jumping enough that when he stopped she had to promptly go to his school in hopes of convincing him to do it again. Unfortunately because he goes to a boys school, this required her to disguise as a boy. Oh to make things better she also had to come from America back to Japan to do this.
Neeedless to say she gets picked on especially by one of the gay dudes because she’s “cuter” than he is. Also “coincidentally” she ends up being Oguri Shun’s room mate. I love how Oguri Shun goes from nice and gentle bishie in HYD to gloomy and lonewolf bishie in this one. Either way we can once again learn how to be a bishounen from him. So anyway there’s a track race, I have no freaking idea why but they don’t want Mizuki to win so they poke a hole in her foot with some cleats ?_? (Ouch) Despite her food bleeding she runs anyway but collapses right before the finish line…to which Mr. Shun comes to her rescue and brings her to the nurse’s office….where the nurse guy goes “Why did a GIRL transfer to a BOYS school hmm?” So yea her secret’s out.
My thoughts so far are good when I know what’s going on. I almost feel as if they expect you to have previously read the manga so you totally understand who is who and why that one guy can “see dead people” (harr.)
Upcoming Attractions: Kissing already? This drama is flying by me too fast!

Yay, I love it when you blog jdramas!
This is probably the only jdrama I’ll keep up with since I won’t have time for others
HanaKimi was a fun read - not terribly great, but a fun ride. So how many episodes is this series slotted for? 11? (If so I’m not surprised they’re gonna go at a fast pace *laughs*)
My guess is 11? I dunno HYD surprised me in season 1 with only 9 O_O;;
Actually thus far this is the only drama I like. I know more are coming but I just didn’t catch on to 7 Days with Papa because it was like a deja vu of hanayome to papa and I wasn’t gonna go through that again! Besides Junno > Shige XD
I’m so definitely watching this!
My comment isn’t really about this show but I was wondering if you could recommend any doramas that are on the easier to understand end of the spectrum. I’ve been learning quite a bit from japanesepod101.com and I want to see how well I can do with something besides anime. Thanks for any help you can give.
This sounds interesting, although the premise is kinda crazy - disuguise as boy to be with your love interest? *lol*
And I am with Nadie: I love it when you blog jdramas
What’s with this season’s jdorama having girls behave like masculine?? First we have Papa to Musume no Nanokakan where the daughter becomes her dad, and now we have HanaKimi where a girl pretends to be a boy to attend an all-boy school.
I followed your example and decided to watch this. Well… download, at least. LOL since I can’t understand japanese, I’ll have to wait for subs to come out.
By the way… do you only blog Dramas/Animes that are currently airing? Not older ones?
Actually, I’ve been to your website since sometime ago, since Hanayome to Papa, but never commented. But I do now, and will.
I’m glad you pick this drama. And hope you’ll like it.
Since I read the manga, and watched the TW version (and hate the ending), I pretty much know the story. And I must say, that they do make things go a lot faster in this Japanese version. I heard that this drama will run for about 3 months. So yeah, 11 episodes?? I just hope they’d make a proper ending to this version.
his name is Sano (checked that up XD LOL)
wow i was waiting for this drama like crazy person cuz in the TDrama there is this actor i hate and he plays sano there and the one playing mizuki ugly >_>
but now we have Oguri Shun and that girl playing (maki or some thing like that i think) way much better then the TDrama!!!
I’ll go search for download and eng subs ^^
man of science> I can’t really help you there as I don’t really know what your level of Japanese is. My guess is any dramas involving little kids (like Yoiko no Mikata) might be easier to understand for you.
bakaneko> I think ever since Ouran, reverse traps are the new thing.
algelic> yes I only blog new dramas.
yuli> yea i was too lazy to visit the drama wiki to read his name. =p
Like I said it’s appreciated, I’m off to google yoiko no mikata. Love the blog and thanks–if anyone else has any ideas, children’s shows would probably be my level to be honest, let me know.
thank you for this review…..
can i take this one and translete it to other language?
may i?
I agree. This drama moves really quickly, and I do think that they expect everyone to have read it. =.= But I must say it’s a lot better than the Taiwanese version. I can’t STAND the girl who played the lead in the Taiwanese Version, But Maki is cute
Thanks for blogging about this, everyone should go check it out, it’s pretty good so far.
Wait, there’s no Nakatsu ? Geez. He was my only motivation for finishing the manga.
Seriously, the manga wasnt great. It has a few nice moments but the plot left a sour taste for me seeing how dumb/dim Mizuki can be and Nakatsu’s end.
mmm.
i saw the first episode, it is pretty good huh. ^_^
i never read the Manga either, but im a pretty big fan of Oguri, so i had to see this when i saw preveiws. XD
he always plays the cool guy, i love him in HYD. I really look forward to seeing the rest of the season. His dramas are always good.
horitaka maki >>> ella/chen jiahui
hands down no contest
Thanks for blogging these Jdramas, it allows me to get some good actual reviews of series rather than japanese girls going “kawaii” over every bishounen in the show.
I was wondering if you’d take a look at a new Jdrama called LIFE and if you like it, blog it and introduce it to people, it’s so teenage-angsty awesome! (for me anyway)
i guess i’m the only one who was really disappointed about the 1st eps. of Hana Kimi o___O
i loved the manga and the Taiwan version (except the last episode)… so i had really high hopes for this one…
the only characters i liked in this jdrama version so far is the ghost guy(played by Yusuke; Himitsu no Hanazono) and the dog…so kawaii!)
ionno why i didn’t like it…maybe coz’ i was in a bad mood while watching it? or…coz’ i just miss chunella so much >.
Chris> LIFE was too creepy for me, I stopped the moment she freaked out about her bf dying and began chopping up her hair. I had enough of that after NObuta wo Produce
lol if that creeped you out I guess it’s best you dropped it, it gets way worse in episode 2 with some pretty intense stuff.
I’m actually very fond of the casts in this drama. I also like the guy that can see “ghosts”. He’s in one of Se7en’s MV, Aitai. I think he’s very cute >_
I saw this on Stage6 the other day by chance, and i like it SO much better than the taiwanese version; however, i would have preferred the doctor from the taiwanese version to play the perverted, gay doctor. That would’ve been better. And i like how they did their own version of the story rather than following directly from the book, makes it more original in my opinion. i can’t seem to find episode 2 though….
Yuli, I’m glad I’m not the only one who dislikes Wu Zun. Though he can’t sing, he’s in Fahrenheit. Just stop looking like an egg and laughing like a dying duck and he’ll be fine as an actor.
And I couldn’t even tell that Ella was even a girl there. I mean, I knew she was a girl, but she doesn’t look it. Nice job, Ella. XD
I think they did expect you to read the manga first… Or watch the TW version first. Or something.
‘Cause if I didn’t watch the TW version first, I’d have not the slightest idea wth was going on.
Hi Hinano!
this is the first time i enter your blog. what can i say it’s a great blog.^__^
anyway, i never watch the JP version or TW versionof this drama
but i’m definitely gonna watch it. since it have read review, i think the story line is good
