Hayate the Combat Love Slave - 14

Published by Hinano at 9:35 pm under Hayate no Gotoku

So while I was making dinner this evening I was thinking about how I would blog Hayate. (Well it’s a more interesting thing to think about than “when will the potatoes finish boiling?”) So I’m at a fork in the road here and I can’t decide whether to continue the parody path or move on to the commentary path. I’m the kind of person that like if someone does a detailed summary of a show before me, I feel like no one’s really gonna bother reading my regurgitation of it unless I’m blatantly making fun of a show. It’s hard to make fun of a show that I actually like though.

Nowdays I mostly watch Hayate for all the little romance aspects. Like how Nagi always takes Hayate’s “polite compliments” all seriously and blushes furiously. How in this week’s episode Maria turned into a tomato (not too long after Hayate went beet red himself.) Although that girl who has a crush on him picking corn cob seeds was kinda annoying. I’m still rooting for Hayate x Nagi. Even though I find the other girls interacting with him cute, in the finality of it all I’d like him to end up with Nagi.

The other issue here is Hayate is available for download Sunday morning for me. I’ve pretty much given up using Winny and I strictly rely on torrents. Because I live in NY now, there’s actually things to do (unlike NJ where the only thing to do was go to the mall or see a movie.) Because there’s things to do and someone to do them with, I spend most of my Sundays doing stuff and then finishing the day with the weekend chores & cooking. So by the time I even get to Hayate 10 people have blogged about it and I’m not sure what to say that hasn’t already been thrown on the table.

If anyone has any suggestions I’m all ears.

Go with what interests you - be it parody noting, or just general commentary. Or whatever you think about it, in the path of an opinion blog rather than a ‘noting the parodies’. As you’ve pointed out, there’s always a few summaries out there before you get to it… and often they’ll point out this week’s references, so why fight it?

Still, I’m at a bit of a loss with this ep, since they cut out a LOT of the Maria stuff regarding how she comforted Hayate after his utter failure (they’re missing a hug, which was why she was supposedly blushing for being ‘that bold’). The rest of the stuff, as to why her letter of recommendation carried any weight, however, will wait for next week’s episode.

Oh okay. Sometimes I get so sidetracked with the randomness that I don’t notice little things like that (or I guess since I haven’t read the manga I might have been annoyed if I knew they had cut that scene.) I’m almost getting tired of listing parodies mainly because I barely catch them anymore.

I never understand what they bleep out and the only thing I really caught was the Urusai Yatsura cosplay Nagi had in her hands.

I’m just downloading episode 13 so I feel at a loss to speak of this episode. But as long as Hayate & Nagi keep up the cuteness, I’m all for it.

PLEASE don’t even hint at Hayate not ending up with Nagi! It’s an impossibility. Just stating the option is giving hope to crazy people on the Internet! Like those Saurka/Naruto idi… never mind. :) I’m sure the crush girl will be sent on her way eventually. She’s just a plot device.. just a plot device… I hope.

Now that you mentioned potatoes, I want something starchy. French fries would be good. Damn McDonald’s and their breakfast/lunch segregation.

I personally have no problem reading regurgitation. That’s what most blogs are. It’s your tone and take that make it interesting. I haven’t made out a parody on this show in about 3 episodes. I’m sure they are there, just not on my radar. The last bleep I got was the Freddy/Jason one from the episode with the old cartridge game.

To sum up, comment on what you’re feeling about the show and it will be more than satisfying.

Err … you KNOW that Nagi is 13 right? I am not keen on the “Hayate is a pedophile” ending …

But seeing on what they did I can guess they will end it at the end of volume 3/start of volume 4 so you will get your “Hayate is a lolicon” ending.

I don’t care that she’s 13, she’s only 3 years younger, If she were 17 and Hayate was 20 then it would be the same thing. Pedophilia to me is like a 20 year old liking a 10 year old, not a 3 year difference.

Hayate’s not thinking of Nagi that way… and by the time anything happens, they’ll both be similar enough in phase-of-life for things not to matter anymore. Besides which, given that this is supposed to go on for 52 episodes, I doubt they’ll end at Vol 4…

oh my freaking god 52?? are you serious??

  9. DarkronNo Gravatar PORTUGALon 04 Jul 2007 at 8:18 pm

I doubt its 52 episodes or they would not be in such a rush to introduce characters that show up much later, they seen to be in rush to show parts of volume 4 without even going to the end of volume 3.

And I am sorry Hinano but he is 16 and she is 13, its not the 3 year gap that creates the issue but the fact she is a child and he is a teenager … This is not Komodo no Jikan.

  10. HaesslichNo Gravatar CANADAon 04 Jul 2007 at 9:16 pm

According to ANN and other news sites, it’s 52 episodes. I suspect the reason they’re rushing is because they wanted to get all the characters introduced first, then start on the normal story progression… especially as the first four volumes of the manga happen within the span of about two weeks or so. :D

And I think the point, Darkron, is that the three-year gap will be minimized fairly quickly - within three or four years, it won’t really matter: once they both move into the late teens/early adulthood, that is. Mentally, in some ways she’s more developed emotionally than Hayate, whose social life was stunted by his need to work (thus giving up any socialization outside of school hours)… and she’s farther ahead than he on the idea of romance; he’s a little dense that way, to the point where he can’t even seem to react to a confession properly.

Still, from what I recall of later volumes (they’re up to material for Vol 11 in Japan, IIRC), they’ve yet to get any further than ‘friends’ because Hayate really can’t see Nagi as anything but a beloved master/little sister figure yet. They’re NOT likely to run out of stuff anytime soon… especially not with filler eps like Ep 10 (the video game ep).

Ok so like when I was in 8th grade and my friends dated a sophmore in high school that made them pedophiles? Uh yea get your pedophile facts straight plz kthx. Please dont compare Kodomo no Jikan with this…there’s a freaking 12 year or so difference not a 3 year gap.

Haesslich, I realize in the manga nothing happens but most often anime takes creative paths and my hope is they will nudge Nagi & Hayate together because as you said, she is more “into” the whole romance/dating thing while Hayate is busy enjoying living a somewhat, normal life.

  12. HaesslichNo Gravatar CANADAon 05 Jul 2007 at 1:17 am

Hinano: The manga provides a LOT of material to mine, but the anime’s already taken great liberties with the material (example: Ep 14 has Katsura-sensei put on the spot by Klaus where the manga didn’t do this) in order to provide enough material in that one story to stretch out over the course of the whole episode. There’s definitely enough material in 10+ published collections to stretch out over 52 episodes, which is what I was trying to get across to Darkron. And the reason she’s more ‘into’ that is because a) she’s a Konota-class otaku with regards to games, manga, anime and dating sims without Konota’s overt pervert tendencies (even if her imagination DOES tend to run away with her), and b) because emotionally she’s more developed than Hayate is because she’s had the leisure of time and friends/family with which to develop that aspect of her life. Sakuya and Isumi, especially, provide her with the sisterhood/close female friend bonds that Hayate’s life has lacked similar components for… which results in him being somewhat socially immature outside of professional interactions.

Whether they bring those two together, or if they continue to be close but ‘not quite there yet’ is another matter; the Mahoraba anime went the second route, even though the manga it came from… well, I won’t spoil, but let’s just say the anime ending differed from the manga’s.
