Hayate no Gotoku - 05

Published by Hinano at 12:45 pm under Hayate no Gotoku

Well I’m back. It seems like I was able to get on my mom’s wireless smoothly so it doesn’t seem like I’ll have trouble getting anime. The only thing is that because I have to go to NYC very often for interviews there might be days where I will just not blog a series because I won’t have time to get to it right away etc. Anyway this week’s Hayate parodies were great and I was able to recognize a few of them. The most obvious one was when they showed 2 character from Marchen Awakens Romance. I never actually seen that show beyond 1 ep but someone asked me to do a kiriban of these two not too long ago which is how I remembered them. I’m glad the characters didn’t turn out to be as annoying as expected and even the kimono girl’s “oro oro” thing made me laugh. XD (Is that like a Kenshin parody?)

Shakugan no Shana - Rie-chan parody 1

Al from Full Metal Alchemist - Rie-chan parody 2

Mirumo de Pon? - Rie-chan parody 3

Upcoming Attractions: Hayate gets sick and Nagi makes him awful porridge.

Well, they’ve deviated from the manga, but in a good way - by parodying Rie Kugimiya herself, and playing off her previous roles… which is horribly amusing, especially with the glowing-haired Nagi there.

One thing to note: every character in this anime is a cliche of some kind; Maria’s the stereotypical maid, Isumi (or Kimono Girl, as you’ve dubbed her) is the stereotypical ‘ojousama’ who’s completely helpless… Sakuya’s the violent friend, etc.

Yea so Ive noticed, but I think the parodies here work in a good way….while I don’t think they work at all in lucky star. I honestly thing this show is the better of the two even though both play on using “parodies” and jokes from “old shows/culture”

Probably because Lucky Star is going for that Seinfeld-normal things are funny too!/we’re so cute and moe that it’s funny! type of comedy, which I gave up on after the promo. And then there’s Hayate who breaks that fourth wall and actually parodies signature moves from known shows. I mean, even the “Please watch animes in well-lighted rooms” ad at the start of each episode is a jab at itself.

Personally I think the parodies/references are failing. Most of it isn’t that funny to me such as the Rie Kugimiya ones. I think comedy-wise this series is going downhill but I still enjoy watching most episodes. The characters for the most part are fairly likeable. I would probably have agreed that this series was funnier than Lucky Star after the first two or so episodes but I think Lucky Star has improved whilst this has lost its way a bit. They’re more or less the same level now where I’ll maybe chuckle at one or two things, find other bits amusing and overall get some enjoyment out of each episode. Usually enough for me with most shows so I see no reason to drop either of them just yet.

This show is a ‘love it or hate it’ type, much like Lucky Star - and from what I’ve heard from many, Lucky Star’s actually going downhill, not uphill. But still, with a show like Hayate, you have to accept two things: 1) It’s not deep, it’ll never be serious, and everything’s a cliche. 2) If you’re an anime fan, you’ll probably get more if you understand most of the jokes, since it’s not written to be as broadly humourous as many comedies are.

Lucky Star follows a similar formula, minus the cliches but with a few more references (see the PPD one from Lucky Star Ep 4).

I dunno… speaking purely from my personal experience I didn’t think Lucky Star could get worse than its first episode and again for me it didn’t. Certainly I haven’t come across anything as bad as the much maligned/much talked about 7 minute discussion on food from ep1(or however long it was). I guess perhaps it’s a case of getting more familiar with the characters *shrugs*. Certainly seems to be more enjoyable compared to the first episode at least so in that respect I’d still say yeah it has gone uphill. Perhaps a teeny bit of hyperbole there.

As for Hayate I’ve a completely open mind to it(haven’t touched the manga) and I’d like to think I’m an anime fan. Sure I can’t pretend to get all the references but even those I do get I’m not finding as funny as some. It’s more of a case of “oh they’re referencing this show here” and that’s about it. Unless there’s something particularly well done. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying I find the same references in Lucky Star funny either. They usually have to be really well done to get more than the above reaction from me. I think possibly the recent Saint Seiya one and the one with the Giant Robot from the first ep are examples, but like in this most recent ep I dunno… couldn’t really think of anything in the same league. I’m finding it hard to get my points across well so you’ll have to forgive me. I think perhaps the second ep post on lucky star on this site(was it?) said it better than me.

I don’t particularly love the show but I don’t hate it either (although some annoying bits did pop up in this episode) so perhaps I’m an exception given it’s supposed to be a love it or hate it type.

Let’s be honest - Lucky Star AND Hayate will never be held up as examples of ‘the best anime has to offer’; they’re not stellar, they’re not the best, and one’s not even animated as well as it could be. They are, however, entertaining… as long as you’re not the sort of person who demands a meaningful anime, or one that meets all of their personal likes or dislikes. This show’s a series of gags, parodies, and references to other games/manga/anime which require an encyclopedia to ‘get’ all of them. It is, however, consistently amusing for me even as I get annoyed with the deviations from the manga.

Lucky Star’s… well, its humor is more like Seinfeld’s, as pointed out by CB; it’s very specific and not easily picked up, and could be seen as an acquired taste. Overall, I’d have to say that I’ve enjoyed Hayate more than Lucky Star, KyoAni or no. The latter’s better in its animation… but the show just doesn’t really grab me. Hayate’s not high art, but I do find it amusing - not ‘the best show of the season’, but funny.

Agreed. I’m still wondering why I’m even continuing this discussion. I merely weighed in with my opinion that seemed to be the opposite of people commenting here. I think I carried on because of lines like: “and from what I’ve heard from many, Lucky Star’s actually going downhill, not uphill.”

Whatever it seems we’re agreeing on most points anyway. Nvm I think I’ll leave it at that since this doesn’t really seem to be going anywhere…

Personally, I feel that this anime series is a great success. Characters are pretty much likeable, and with the Saimoe fest going on, this anime will go even higher on the rankings, since the lead female character, Sanzen’in Nagi is either champion, or at least a runner-up currently. Anyway, the parodies are pretty obvious compared to Lucky Star’s, and I like to spend effort finding what are the references, but still, this has some references that will really make you laugh your ass off. Still, I must say, they must be pretty good friends with Gundam producers, since they keep referencing to Gundam.
The OP is pretty catchy, and since it’s by KOTOKO, I’ll give it a thumbs up, and animation is decent. Overall I’ll give it a 8/10, since some parts like “Is this Michael ****son’s house??!!” made me laugh so hard my stomach hurt.
