Oh come on… Let’s look at the situation:

1. He’s obviously got some kind of intimacy phobia
2. He’s stuck on an island that happens to have a society of entirely women
3. Said society has been around for 130 years
4. He was underwater to get there for at least a few hours
5. The ready supply of rice on an island with no room for rice paddies
6. The mutant modeling clay animals

There’s a lot more I won’t go into, but it all points to one thing. He’s clearly dead, and stuck in some Stephen King-esque harem purgatory dimension.
