Lovely Complex - 01
I am very pleased
with this anime adaptation as well and it really brings life to all the kansai-ben/tsukkomi that went on in the manga. Koizumi Risa and Ootani Atsushi both have a height complex….because they are the “opposite” of what their sex expects their heights to be. Risa is too tall while Atsuhi is too short, which has everyone calling them them the Kyoujin Kyoudai (I might need a spellcheck on that one because I don’t have the manga handy.) The two of them are sick of everyone labeling them as the freak twins so they are on a mission to get a boyfriend/girlfriend.
The opening theme is done by yet another hybrid Johnny’s unit called “TEGOMASU” which is basically 2 members of NEWS, Masuda Takahisa and Tegoshi Yuuya (who was in My Boss My Hero drama if you recall.) I knew it was somebody from NEWS the moment I heard it but when I saw the credits I was like wtf? Another hybrid name you may recall is “Shuuji to Akira” for Nobuta wo Produce and “Toraji Haiji” for Fantastipo. Anyway, everybody in the show speaks kansai-ben so those of you who try to watch raws and don’t know Japanese too well, this isn’t going to be of much help to you XD I had trouble just trying to keep up because they also spoke very fast like they would in an owarai.
Anyway Risa falls in love with a guy who has been out sick of a couple weeks that she’s never seen before. Atsushi picks up on it, and suggests that he become friends with Suzuki-kun to help her get closer to him….and in return asks that she help him get closer to her friend Chiharu. They all go on a double date to a water park but because Risa and Atsushi have so much in common, they stuff they wanna do, is always the same, in contrast to what Chiharu and Suzuki have interest in. The other thing is, Chiharu seems to have a fear of men but later says that Suzuki seems nicer than all of them.
When Risa asks what Chiharu thought of Atsushi, she responds that he’s just a cute little guy and has no interest in him as a man. He hears this and runs away upset. Risa tells him not to give up, but later finds herself in the same boat because it appears Suzuki has the hots for Chiharu! They decide to try once again by having another double date at a summer festival. Unfortunately when they see how good Suzuki and Chikaru look together. they both decide to give up and have fun together. Risa then starts to wonder if maybe she and Atsushi have more in common than she thought.
So then afterwards, Suzuki confesses his love to Chiharu and I guess they become officially boyfriend and girlfriend. I felt like they squished 4-5 chapters into this episode so things felt a bit rushed…but I guess that always beats them dragging on something for 3 episodes *coughNarutocough*. Risa and Atsushi then make a bet about who will get a boyfriend/girlfriend first and the loser has to take some kind of punishment. Overall I really enjoyed the first episode. It’s very colorful and fast paced and even JP liked the random scenes of a captain blowing up a Risa-tanic.
Upcoming Attractions: Atsushi’s ex-girlfriend shows up!

I’ve been looking forward to this a bit after reading the manga some time ago. I adore the Risa/Otani interactions (their fights and the gentler moments, etc.). I’m a bit surprised at the amount of chapters they used for the first episode though and Otani’s ex is already showing up too o_O.
Anyways, this’ll probably be my shoujo series to blog for the season.
I’ve been looking forward to this one! I love the manga :DDDD! Btw, Hinano, how were the opening and ending songs?
flou> I really like them. It’s the typical “Johnny’s” song feel, so if you like stuff by NEWS you’ll definitely like them as well.
Leon> I read the manga up to I think volume 13? some time ago as well so most of the stuff I’m going from my memory…but yea I was sure it was almost a whole volume before they got to his ex!
I haven’t heard anything from NEWS in a long time, so I’m looking forward to them
I finished the manga anyway, so even though I know what’s going to happen, I’m still going to watch this ^_^
Did the manga end?
The manga is still going from what I can remember. 15 volumes and counting.
Yeah, at like chapter 60 something unless there’s some hidden sequel I don’t know about.
this animation remembered me of one piece
cant wait to see the ep XD
( hope its not going to be a total loss of time, like bokura ga ita ¬¬ )
hahahaha, I actually decided to have my quiet fix on this instead of blogging. I guess it’s once again stalking in your blog for the latest summaries of lovely complex before I get the subs ^^…
Neko> Noo way this is 10x better than Bokura ga Ita (assuming they follow the manga :P)
impz> haha you better update your blogroll then! (for my blog description XD)
hey .. who will sub this anime .. i cant wait to see this … i saw the movie and it was soo kawaii..
Just finished volum 6 or something, i think i’ll need to hit the online chinese servers for the rest >_>
that’s funny - after watching too much japanese comedy i understand the whole kanzai-dialect better than standart japanese …
comes in handy with this anime, but not the rest xD
i believe the manga has just ended its run at japanese volume 16.
i have not read the end of it, but apparently the ending is still somewhat open-ended, and it has been speculated that a sequel is planned.
bokura ga ita is hard to appreciate. Its kind of different though its not so much romance/comedy as rabukon.
can’t wait for next few eps to see how this anime turns out~
This has got to be one of the best mangas i’ve read. Extremely funny! It’s well drawn too with those sarcastic faces. I love it.
Is there by any chance that this manga is being translated in english for volumes 6 and above?
I really like your review blog! Found this when I was searching for Hanayome to Papa reviews.
I love the manga of Lovely Complex, so thank you so much for reviewing the anime! The manga is really funny, one which I can laughed out loud when reading it. And also touching too. I’ll wait for your updates!
