Nagasarete Airantou - 01

Published by Hinano at 6:23 pm under Nagasarete Airantou

If you ever liked Gilligan’s Island and Vandread this is probably the show for you. It basically combines the main concept from both shows and adds a bunch of baby-wanting women who only have 1 man to populate with. Unfortunately the man would rather be playing video games at home than having girls throw themselves at him. This show is probably dumb as a brick but because I spent money on the first 4 volumes of the manga, I figured I’d keep up with it until it’s completely unbearable enough to drop.

As I mentioned before, the story is about Ikuto, 15 year old kid (I think that’s his age) who runs away from home and jumps on board a ship. I’m not really sure why but he ends up falling off the boat and I guess in Japan they don’t care if they lose a passenger or two so they throw him a life saver and float away. He tries to swim back to the boat but gets caught in a bunch of tidal waves. Eventually he drifts over to Airan Island (har har guys!) and is reeled in (literally) by the main heroine (voiced by Horie Yui), Suzu.

Hilarity ensues after Ikuto discovers (from an old granny who I guess was there for a long time) that they all got drifted down here as well and that there are no men left. Why, I still don’t know maybe the answer lies somewhere after volume 4 of the manga. It looks like they squashed chapters 1, 2 and 3 into this episode by introducing EVERY character (even the teddy bear loli). The way it made it seem though is that they all wanna have his babies, rather than they just wanna “play or interact” with a guy. Ah well I guess we’ll leave it at that.

The only one clueless of what a “man” actually is, is Suzu. She was all like “Why is his chest so flat?” I can’t wait till the “why does he have a cock?” episode. So anyway Ikuto attempts to escape by rowing on a boat but the island seems to be surrounded by 3 whirlpools so escape is futile. He almost drowns too but then Suzu goes to save him. In the meantime, the “rest” of the harem cast has the “I’m doing him first!” look in their eyes. I had actually scanlated volume 1 back in my fansubbing days, and I’m sure it’s floating around the web somewhere. Well regardless, it’s kinda like Seto no Hanayome, but I guess with both shows, reading the manga makes you wanna see it animated, rather than trying to enjoy it for the first time.

Upcoming Attractions: Not a clear preview, but my guess is Ikuto gets chased by a bunch of horny women and Suzu saves him.

Quoted by Hinano: “I can’t wait till the ‘why does he have a cock?’ episode.”

I think you’ll be waiting a very long wait, because:

Quoted by Hinano: “Unfortunately the man would rather be playing video games at home than having girls throw themselves at him.”

    I hope people get it.

Haha yea good point. I was hoping maybe later in the manga it would change…I actually downloaded the manga vols 5-8 so I’ll try to read up on that sometime.

The colors are more vivid than I’d expected, which is a good thing. I bought volumes 6, 7, 8 last summer in Kyoto, I’ll feel cheated if I don’t watch this.

I remember reading a description of the manga a while back and thinking there was no way it could be anything but terrible–but I tried it anyway and ended up loving it. I think it’s because it has a great cast, and if the characters can make me laugh I don’t really care how unreasonable the rest of the plot is.

Anyway, it’s great to finally see this animated–although now I need to stop listening to the OP and ED over and over again and get some sleep…

You forgot the fact that he pines after his sister as well. lol

I actually like this one, and particularly the redhead girl with the long twin ponytails (she’s like a far less ill-tempered version of Ayako from Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo, or should I say she’s just as Megadere as Ayako, and just as sexy as well).

FubaredByAnime> Pines? I had to look that up; I’ve honestly never heard or read that word before. At first, I thought it connoted “hard” and “woody,” you know, like pine trees. In either case, I meant to imply that the main character was not a man, i.e., doesn’t have male distinguishing parts.

So I’m imagining Suzu seeing Ikuto with his pants down and thinking something around the lines of: “Oh, how nice, he’s a flat-chested girl. He, he, I’m bigger!”

Anyways, I’m off to find Airan Island; wish me luck.

heavenorhell7> Check the dictionary for “pine” as a verb. The one I looked up says “To feel a lingering, often nostalgic desire.” But the other definitions you thought of kinda fit too. lol

Fubared> LOL musta slipped my mind :P

Sailor> long red hair ponytails? The only ponytails girl I recall is Ayane…maybe it was a minor character ?_?

    Heaven> ganbare!

ooh her, damn I forget her name (Chikage?? @_@)
LOL I thought she was the only one who like….was SHY around him or something…maybe that was another character

@Sailor Enlil: That’s Rin; her main “drawback” comes in the form of a girl XD.

I liked the manga because it doesn’t take itself seriously and has a great cast of characters to work with. Machi FTW!

    Definitely a keeper.

    Confirmed her name: Rin

I loved the OP and ED songs, perhaps it’s because Horie Yui is singing both. Having her as Suzu’s seiyuu just boosted the moe factor a dozen times over. (I just hope she voices Hanyuu in Higurashi season2 though, as she did in the PS2 version.)

The only thing that I fear would be the animation quality. The overuse of chibis may land them into the Yoake ’standard’ as the series progresses. But considering that it’s the same animation studio that did Otoboku, I’m certain that it won’t degenerate to that standard.

Advice to those guys going to the island, bring packets of blood along with you. Judging from how much blood Ikuto lost during the first episode, it’ll be safer to provide your own external source if you happen to be wedged between boobs.

I am torn between stupidity of the show and moe factor of Yui Horie… And as of male character, he is in good tradition of harem anime protagonists, indestructible. Still, my comedy slot is probably taken by Hayate. Better gags there IMHO.

[...] Based on a popular manga, Nagasarete Airantou follows the tale of a not-out-of-the-closet-yet main hero stuck on a lone island with horny females aiming to bone him 24/7/365. See Hung, novastorm, kurogane, jaalin, hinano, and jason for other folks’ take on this hilarious and fanservice-y series. [...]

If you’re the only male on the damn island you’d die of fear or die from trying to fertilise all the damn women. Either way, you’re screwed, pun intended XD.

The guy who did the review over at “Anime On My Mind” said some things that stuck in my mind:

“Why did it took four years (?) to turn it from manga to anime?”

“The manga had ‘way more fanservice’ than this.”

    “…uh, ‘money shots.’”

I, my fellow anime viewers, had mastered the art of seeing anime from five miles away and instantly labling it “CRAP.” As with 85% of this seasons’s anime, this is yet more pure crap. But I’m keeping tabs on it because it’s part of my quota. :(

Busou Renkin? Claymore? Male leads that aren’t spineless and/or punching bags?!

  21. Hinano UNITED STATESon 10 Apr 2007 at 12:22 pm

This show IS total crap but sine I bought the manga I feel I HAVE to watch this. And Jason was right, in the manga you saw a pantyshot on every other page so yea the anime cut a lot of that out…but I’m kinda glad. Too much fanservice turns into crap like Polyphonica or Touka Gettan

Damnit, no wonder the seiyuu sounded familiar. I must reaadjust my Yui Horie radar a bit. Didn’t hear traces of her previous “accent” (a.k.a. the Ojou-sama) here. :/
