Kanon - 24 (Finale)

Published by Hinano at 5:40 pm under Kanon

To be honest…I’m unsatisfied with the ending and I’m gonna give props to TOEI because I felt they wrapped it up better. I think the whole idea of showing Ayu in a coma and then having them take “care” of her was ridiculous. The other lovely plothole is if Mai has these great healing powers, why didn’t she just use them on Ayu? Or did they disappear when the monsters disappeared.

Uhh yea I really hated this scene. I know it’s supposed to be touching but since I hate Shiori and I think her whole story is dumb, all I saw in front of me was the annoying girl jumping on her senpai to try to get him in the sack. WELL TOO BAD CAUSE HE ONLY CARES ABOUT THE CATATONIC BODY IN THE HOSPITAL.

I also felt kinda lacking in this scene in the KyoAni version. Where’s the Sayuri x Mai tsukkomi scene? TOEI pulled it off why won’t KyoAni do it! :( Also it seems in the KyoAni version since they made Ayu known to like all the characters, they asked Yuuichi about her while in the TOEI one they weren’t aware of her at all.

So yea although I KNOW the game was kinda deus ex machina but the fact that everyone just kept going “miracle, miracle” didn’t really help make it any less obvious. I don’t know I just didn’t like how Ayu just…appeared after “childhood Yuuichi gave the present to childhood Ayu.” I don’t get it at all. The new Ayu doesn’t even have the headband….so I really don’t get that whole scene.

The ultimate WTF to me was the wheel chair. In TOEI Yuuichi grabbed her hand and they “ran” off. However this time she’s in a wheel chair. I mean yea I know she just recovered from the hospital and laying 9 years in bed…but if you’re gonna be THAT strict what about the fact that she’s been asleep since she was like 10(?)..doesn’t she still have the mental capacity of a 10 year old…ala Kimi ga Nozomu Eien/Haruka? So that whole part weirded me out and I didn’t like how they really tried to make me feel sorry for Ayu, because I want to see her genki and crap…not all sad and disabled. =_=; Overall the series was great but degrading Ayu like this was a real thorn in my side.

P.S. Now that I think about it, in the eroge, Yuuichi did it with a ghost, a fox spirit and a dying girl. LAWL.

So in case you haven’t heard the latest and the greatest, KyoAni will also be animating Clannad. Since I know absolutely nothing of what the game is about I decided to…uh well play the game (and also add a category of eroge into my blog.) I know Clannad isn’t eroge but I just categorize all games for the male audience as eroge…since they probably fap to non-eroge and therefore giving it the same effect as ero.

Oh and also at the end of Kanon was a commercial for Kaibutsu Oujo which kinda looks like D.N.Angel as far as animation o___o. Hopefully the story isn’t as awful as the DNAngel anime was.

I’ve got to agree - Toei’s conclusion was much more satisfying. Kinda sad, really, since this is the first time KyoAni have really deviated from the game script substantially.

With respect to Mai, I believe when she was hospitalised she informed Yuuichi that her powers were gone (it was the rationale justifying her non-interference in Shiori’s story).

What did the game end like? I don’t even remember.

//but if you’re gonna be THAT strict what about the fact that she’s been asleep since she was like 10(?)..doesn’t she still have the mental capacity of a 10 year old//

She probably would only still have the mental capacity of a 6-8 year old if it wasn’t for the fact that her mind freely traveled the city in the interim.

//because I want to see her genki and crap…//

considering that she has been in a coma for most of her life, I consider that pretty genki, she could have ended up like Terri Schiavo, yet the biggest problem for her in the end is that she doesn’t have the strength to walk, something that would be fixed with rehab.

    Guess Kyo-Ani can’t please the unreasonable…

  4. Eleutheria UNITED STATESon 15 Mar 2007 at 7:25 pm

Hah, Ayu had a seven-year-long out-of-body experience, so the only thing she’s missing is education…and I bet Yuuichi is giving that to her in spades ;o

Actually I kind of like KyoAni’s edition a bit better. The idea of Ayu in a wheelchair is actually more realistic (for someone in a coma for that many years, their body has pretty much gone atrophy due to lack of exercise and has forgotten to do much of its natural functions like walking). I think Toei just left that part out as part of its effort to the show more kids-friendly and thus happier (in fact Yuuichi in the Toei version was much more of a kid to me [kinda like those 3 boys of CLAMP School Detectives] than in KyoAni’s [who obviously was modelled after Kyon of Haruhi Suzumiya]).

  6. dsong UNITED STATESon 15 Mar 2007 at 7:51 pm

The ending comes several months after the awakening…

With that said, it’s reasonble to think think Ayu would still be in the wheelchair.

  7. Drakron PORTUGALon 15 Mar 2007 at 8:12 pm

    7 years actually.

Its realistic that after 7 years lying on a bed your muscles are pretty screwed up and its requires therapy to recover.

I take they followed a “no girl” ending instead of Ayu ending and yes, as I pointed out in a previous comment she is missing 7 years of her life, her body did not stop and continued to age as the world moved but mentally she would still be the same as 7 years ago … I know this no Onegai Teacher that did deal with that to a degree.

  8. Hinano UNITED STATESon 15 Mar 2007 at 8:21 pm

What do you mean no girl ending? He ended up with Ayu! :O

LOL, out of all the female bloggers I read, you seem to be the only one that truly understands men.

  10. Drakron PORTUGALon 15 Mar 2007 at 10:16 pm

That was my impression from your blog, I never watched a episode of this series.

How I have even less of a reason to watch it is that if he ends up with a someone mentally 7 years younger that him … and he is 16/17.

  11. Tim AUSTRALIAon 15 Mar 2007 at 10:21 pm

Well, the game ending wasn’t that great either, and wasn’t really appropriate for the anime. Ayu isn’t discovered by Yuuichi, and he plays no real role in her recovery - it just happens. I just meant it was kinda sad that the only time in the entire series where KyoAni were obliged to improvise, they couldn’t do a good job of it.

  12. Hinano UNITED STATESon 15 Mar 2007 at 10:25 pm

oh wow so the game ending sucked even more o_o
so yea I guess KyoAni was an improvement upon it however as you have said, I prefered TOEI’s lighthearted ending more. XD

  13. Nightingale UNITED STATESon 15 Mar 2007 at 10:36 pm

Can’t say im not disappointed, but my expectations are too high anyway. But i still like the whole scene about U1 finding the hairband and fulfilling the “promise”, the key to wake up Ayu. That really brought out the feel i wanted, the key of resolution, promise and the final miracle, the whole theme of this anime, a very nice end of everything. That alone covers up all the major (and terrible) complains i had for the first half of the episodes. I must say im quite delighted the fact they didn’t make Ayu look half bad in that last outfit (which looked kinda eh… for me ever since the game.)

  14. retsgip UNITED STATESon 16 Mar 2007 at 1:41 pm

yeah /yawn at the whole series.

It was animated well and they had some touching moments, but I didn’t really like the story at all. Oh well.

  15. scottfrye UNITED STATESon 16 Mar 2007 at 6:24 pm

I didn’t think it was a bad series. I’ve not had the chance to see the TOEI version or the game so this was my first experience with Kanon.

Not sure the ending fitted well with the rest of the series. It seemed to me a bit rushed and didn’t make much sense. Everyone just got better suddenly. It’s was like nothing had happened. They really jumped far ahead. And I think I would have liked to have seen Yuuichi give Ayu the headband.

  16. Hinano UNITED STATESon 16 Mar 2007 at 6:54 pm

yea thats why I liked TOEI’s Ayu+hospital+headband deal more

  17. Mirrinus UNITED STATESon 17 Mar 2007 at 1:31 am

You know, about the headband, I’m going to have to disagree. Looking at the scene where little Yuuichi wearing current-day Yuuichi’s green coat and meeting little Ayu waiting on the bench, I saw that scene as a metaphor for Yuuichi visiting Ayu in the hospital and giving her the headband. Don’t take the scene literally; the words that they say to each other strongly hint at a similar occurance in real life. Yuuichi apologizes for being late, Ayu claims to have been waiting for a really long time, but she still remains faithful that he’d fulfill his promise to her. Then he gives her the headband. And then, he offers her his hand and tells her to come with him. I interpret this entire scene as the awakening scene for Ayu. And personally, I’m really pleased with this version. Interpreting it this way has made this episode make a lot more sense. Plus it really did cause me to actually cry a little, which is very rare for me, especially considering I already knew how the story was going to end.

  18. Skane SINGAPOREon 17 Mar 2007 at 5:57 am

Mai did not heal Ayu because the one that made the promise should be the one to fulfil it. She indirectly “healed” Ayu by nudging Yuuichi into the right direction.

Yuuichi DID give Ayu the headband in the hospital. That was the whole point of the final shota-Yuuichi scene. That was the symbolic moment where Yuuichi gave Ayu the headband in the hospital.

His line, “Come on. Let’s go.” was the moment of awakening for Ayu.

That scene is symbolic, and should not be taken literally. Ergo, it did not happen in real life, but is a metaphor for what is actually going on in real life.

    Cheers.

  19. Hinano UNITED STATESon 17 Mar 2007 at 10:18 am

I guess I prefer literal stuff over symbolism? Those things always fly over my head :|

  20. Al UNITED STATESon 17 Mar 2007 at 12:02 pm

Not only was it supposed to be symbolic, it was also a tie-in with the fact that Yuuichi originally chose “illusion” over reality. That scene was Yuuichi’s way of pulling Ayu out of the illusion and back into real life. In the end, he finally choose reality over illusion by completing his promise to Ayu.

In any case, cant wait for クラナド

  21. MoppyPuppy UNITED STATESon 17 Mar 2007 at 3:03 pm

I… Thought the ending was pretty good.
Yes, however I think everybody taking care of Ayu when she was unconscious was a little over done.

For the comments about “Why didn’t Mai just magically revive Ayu?” well she did show up. I figure she tried, and then she said that only Yuuichi could fulfill the promise nessecary to wake her up.

I think the best part of the entire series was the DREAM thing they kept pushing on us every 5 seconds. At first I wanted to write the creators and say “Yeah, dream, WE GET IT.” but I didn’t get it really.

There were comments about Ayu still bieng mentally 7 years younger, but considering this was all her dream I think she was there for every second of the 7 years Yuuichi was away.

Last thing, Shiori had a little too “ON THE BUTTON” theory for the recent miracles. I think it was neccesary to say, but they could have been more subtle.

Shiori: You think you might be in someone’s dream?
Yuuichi: What? What makes you think that?
Shiori: Oh I just got this random thought…

But this didn’t bother me, it just made me laugh a bit.

I haven’t seen previous versions of the anime or played the game so I probably dont know any better, but I thought this series was AWESOME!!!!!!

Now what? I haven’t seen anything of this caliber before. Will I ever again? Someone point me in a direction! And dont point to CLANNAD that looks like it may become to silly for my taste. Kanon was dead serious all the time, although the situations; (Ghost visits, Demon fighting, AIDS, Out of body experiences by those in 7 year comas…) …were a little over the top.

I need to find another Kanon. Not something silly, If I want that I just watch G.A.

  22. Hinano UNITED STATESon 17 Mar 2007 at 4:46 pm

    Uhh have you tried Air?

  23. MoppyPuppy UNITED STATESon 17 Mar 2007 at 8:05 pm

    No.
    I’ll look into it.

And one more thing I wanted to say but forgot too.
Out of all the story Arcs and Characters, Mai is my all time favorite Character/Story Arc.

    It was Spectacular.
    By DEFINITION.

  24. ewok POLANDon 19 Mar 2007 at 5:23 am

    agree on Mai, swordgirls FTW!
seriously though, probably one thing that stops Kanon from being 100% perfect is everybody as a fave girl and if she’s not Ayu, it makes you angry…

  25. exaltdragon SINGAPOREon 19 Mar 2007 at 11:45 pm

I agree with hinano. This is by far the worst episode of kanon and it had to be the concluding episode. The ending was so confusing even after watching it twice I didn’t understand. All we can offer are theories about what the real ending is. In the end, Kyoto Animation dabbled too much in flashbacks and sub-reality such that the sublime meaning got lost. What illusion? What reality? What dream? It reminds me of the dream of chuang chou:

“Once Chuang Chou dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn’t know he was Chuang Chou. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Chuang Chou. But he didn’t know if he was Chuang Chou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Chuang Chou.”

The only thing is the viewers of kanon 2006 are chuang chou and now we can’t tell if the story is the reality, the dream, the past, or the illusion or otherwise…XD

not sure if anyone noticed it. Just before the EP, there was a shot of a fox at the edge behind the plant that grew on the giant tree that was cut down… I think it looks like makoto is genki too!

  28. Taskforce UNITED STATESon 20 Mar 2007 at 6:16 pm

The main thing I didn’t like about KyoAni’s version compared to TOEI’s is the complete lack of story revolving around Nayuki being in love with him at the end. While they were cousins and destined not to be together. It should have still been presented and it wasn’t. I haven’t played the game so I don’t know if it is in it, but it certainly did make TOEI’s version a much better and more interesting watch at the end.

  29. BabyKayT MALAYSIAon 05 May 2007 at 7:31 am

There’s another anime called CLANNAD coming out in september i think. Its made by well i tink TOEI or Kyo. Some people say that the game is being made by TOEI n the televiion series by Kyo or maybe the other way round. The trailer is awesome~

  30. Hinano UNITED STATESon 05 May 2007 at 8:15 am

TOEI made the Clannad movie while KyoAni is making the TV series. Kyoani’s version looks 20 times nicer. I did a game review for Clannad, so be sure to check it out if you’re interested :)

i didin’t bother to watch the 02 version since the art was reeli painful too see after watchin kanon 06. i get the story though, much more than AIR XD….basically, she doesn’t have the headband cuz he never gave it to her. she fell off the tree…and liike, after she fell in the coma, she reeli watned to see yuuichi again so that will brought her soul to see him which was they ayu we saw through the whole seires wearin the red headband and eatin taiyaki ^^ but then, when the time came that she would almost wake up, her “dream” started to fade cuz you can’t “dream” if you’re not asleep i guess….hope i cleared things up a bit and sorry for the long post..
