The end is near. I found a job!!

Published by Hinano at 2:14 pm under Rants & Raves

Edit: So as irony would have it, I found a job. Once again another temp job but the experience I could get here is pretty damn awesome so I hope to cling on to it as long as I possibly can.

Edit2: That job sucked bad and they wanted me to drive 2 days a week down to another office 52 miles away. With gas prices rising, I don’t feel a temp job with no real end is worth it. So yea I quit lmao.

I hate to have more than 1 emo post a month but reality has been banging on my door harder the past week so I figured I’d spit it out before it’s too late. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m unemployed. I’ve been actively searching for a job and it’s already been over a month and I’m still unemployed. I’m registered with like 6 temp agencies and none of them are doing jack shit. The main reason is I live in the worst area for entry level jobs and in order to have a job you have to be nurse/doctor or work in retail which pays minimum wage and is typically work for high school students without a college degree.

Apparently having a a bachelors degree, advanced MS Office skills and typing 85 words per minute is not enough for me to land a stupid administrative office lady job…which is why I’m still unemployed. My only source of income at this point is my online manga which isn’t selling much anyway.

I’ve been living off my savings for the past month and will probably do so until the end of March. Most likely sometime in April I’m gonna give up my apartment and move back home. What does this have to do with blogging? Everything. Most likely if the above happens I will quit blogging cold turkey. I’m not gonna go into details but obtaining internet access/downloading anime on time is gonna be difficult so I’m gonna just drop this whole thing. I’d hate to do this because blogging is a big part of my life but thanks to our shittastic economy that’s the way things are turning out.

I figured I’d write this out just in case one day I disappear from blogging and never come back and people are all wondering like “whoa what happened?” Then again most likely JP would know about it and he’d probably post something too *shrug* I dunno. Well back to work on my only source of income :(.

All the best in getting another job. I’m sure you’ll get one in no time. Cheer up alright?

But yes what Tsubaki said, make someone support you. For life.

Then that would make me like one of those stupid japanese women who sits at home all day while her sarariman husband works like a hatarakiman and then goes to host clubs. I’d never degrade myself to that level thank you :)

And to be honest, going to grad school would be money into the wind, considering the profession I’m in half the time doesn’t require beyond a bachelor’s degree.

I know the feeling, my wife went through the same thing after the dot-com crash, answering phones even though she had a degree and 5 years of management experience. Real life takes priority over blogging, but if you end up having to leave Blogistan, best of luck to you and thanks for some entertaining blog entries.

Hmmm. Maybe you can put up ads? Or ask for donations? Those probably still wouldn’t cover all your expenses though. You do blog a lot, though, so you never know.

Good luck finding a good job. Make sure you list the podcast in your resume! ;)

Sorry if this is a useless comment, but…why don’t you look for jobs outside of where you live right now? If it pays decently enough you could move.

  10. scottfryeNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 4:05 pm

I actually Hinano I can relate to your problem. I graduated from college in 2004 and I looked for a decent work for like 2 years. So this past January I decided that it was time to go back to school and get something different. Currently, I’m studying to get a certificate in Web Site Design. Not entirely sure if it will help but I will give it a go. The only problem is that web design jobs are hard to come by in this area.

    Anyways, good luck to you.

  11. TallonNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 4:12 pm

Yeah, to avoid such, my brother moved back home after college graduation. The price of living on ones own without a real job (or one at all) is too much and usually doesnt work anyway, so ill probably be doing the same. Its a pretty normal practice these days, so its not like its something to look down on or anything. And until you can get a stable job that pays well, you get stuck with highschool kid jobs during times highschool kids cant work. D: Other then that, the only reason i see noone would hire you office-lady wise is you type, well….really slow. I dont mean to talk shit or something, im just saying you should work on that if you plan on getting a job that looks at that type of thing. =X

Anyway, scott stole my ending line but ill just repeat him, good luck! Id totally buy a few copies of Mytho-Soup but im a poor college student D:

  12. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 4:38 pm

Hung> My kanji reading sucks so I’d never pass JLPT level 1 nor be hired as a translator I’m afraid :P As far as donations, I’m probably not gonna do that but the most I’d ask is if people at least purchase my manga :P

    suguru> Wow management experience? That’s a shame :(

Seth> Yea thats the thing, I’m waiting to find out which grad school JP got into…then I’d probably move wherever he’s going so like for now I need a job and it’s sad that I can’t even get any temp work.

scott> Do you even NEED a certificate to do website design though? Don’t you just show them your “samples” and see if they hire you? I hate freelance work, it’s so hard to please the clients these days.

Tallon> If 85 wpm is slow, then all the office ladies that get hired type like snails with their 35-50 wpm. I’ve administered tests to legal secretaries before and none of them ever came close to my typing speed. Yet they got hired on 50k a year salaries. I’ve worked in HR and every job that I’ve interviewed with they found my typing speed impressive so I don’t know where you get that I “I type slow”. Have you actually taken an agency typing test or do you go by one of those online ones? The online ones told me I type 120 so

I had a job though. A stable one anyway, but I left it to do temp work because it was pretty dead end and I wanted to get more experience. Which yes while I got the experience, because it was a temp job it left me unemployed. So yea in a sense I brought this on to myself, but at least I gained something out of it. I’d never just go and get an apartment if my only source of income was my manga or a job at a retail store.

After reading this even I got depressed. This little post brought me back to reality with a cold, quick slap to the groin; damn it, it made me realize that I’ll have to work again sometime … maybe. Luckily where I’m at there seems to be employment of almost every kind available.

But who wants to work when you can keep studying? You should get a humongous school loan and live off that for a while. That’s what I think I’ll do again, and if I die in debt, I win. That’s how I’ll get back at those filthy corporations. The other option that often crosses my mind, which I want to suggest, is to become a mountain man, or in your case, a mountain woman. Live off the wild and piggy-back off some rich person’s internet at their cabin.

Ignore the last, it’s too extreme if you love society. If you leave suddenly then consider this a preemptive farewell: Remember not to work too hard; best of luck. Laters.

  14. TallonNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 5:04 pm

lol i didn’t mean anything bad by it D: And no, i wasn’t talking about online ones, lol. Those are like “U TYPE 150WPM” even if you type like 3 letters the entire time O: im not stupid =x But i dunno, i type around 95-100WPM and i don’t even want a job id ever need typing skills at, so i just figured you’d do more, i didn’t realize i type so extremely fast compared to most people O: My bad D: Anyway, i was just saying what works for some people, like i said, i wasnt trying to be a dick or anything D:

  15. TallonNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 5:08 pm

Sorry double reply, but the reply above me reminded me of it. If you keep something like….6 credits worth of classes in a college you can keep getting student loans (and also not have to pay them off.)…So another option would be to do that and just take the minimum amount of credits with online classes or easy stuff like ‘bowling class’, lol. But that wont work if its been over a semester since you graduated =x I think thats what heaven was getting at, but if not, then theres something else you could do lol. Being a student for life keeps you from loan payments AND keeps you with atleast a tiny amount of money. Albeit if you ever stop going to classes (literally, ever) your gonna have a huge amount of debt >>

  16. scottfryeNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 5:18 pm

Well, technically I don’t need a certificate for web design but I wanted to get some schooling in it. There is some stuff I don’t know and some I do know. It doesn’t hurt to have it on a resume and also my previous school has nothing to do with design.

And about a portifolo I don’t have one at the moment. I know for a fact the last class for the program is a portifolo class, which I use some of the final projects in these classes as material.

  17. scottfryeNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 5:22 pm

@Tallon: That is not a very wise thing to do. The problem is not only money but health insurance. After you graduate from college, you can’t use your parents insurance any more and if you don’t have full time work you don’t get insurance, which is a bad thing considering how much medical costs are.

  18. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 28 Feb 2007 at 5:38 pm

Scott> yea I’ve been pretty much uninsured since October ‘06 so if something happens to me I think I’d rather die than pay hospital costs. I should like carry a card on me “if I get into an accident ,please kill me, I cant afford hospital care lol”

Tallon> I haven’t been in school since August ‘05 so that’s a definite out for me :P The loan people totally screwed me over too so I really don’t wanna deal with those idiots anymore

What’s your degree in? Don’t you have an employment service agency that can search for the best suitable job for you?

If you move back home, will your chances of finding employment be better? Will you have to pay rent for your room with your family? If you can find a job back home and not have to pay too much rent, you could save a lot of money.

Do you live in the same city as JP now? If not, maybe you could move to his city (and maybe his apartment). ^_~

If you have a college degree, you could always teach English in Japan… which is what I do now. But then again, that would mean moving to another country entirely and being separated from your beloved JP.

Anyway good luck on finding a job. Ganbare!

    wrex> my degree’s in psychology but I’ve been doing Human Resource work the last year. My “home” isnt too far but it save on apartment rent and I’d be looking for a job outside this vicinity because then i could just get an apartment near that job (and I’m mainly aiming for New York City because the ratio of jobs there to jobs here is like 25:1) Me and JP are looking into moving together but we gotta wait to find out where he’s going for grad school. He doesn’t have a real job himself either unfortunately :( The teaching English in Japan idea crossed my mind a while ago but I never went through with it because I had the apartment lease and a full time job and I didn’t wana give that up…and now I don’t wana give up JP like you said ^^;

You should consider teaching eh? That’s what I may end up doing since jobs are scarce now-a-days, and there’s always a demand for teaching. Also, this allows you to make at least “some” money so that your bigmoney-bf doesn’t do all the work. Then of course you might get some summers off so you can like only wear an apron whilst you cook for your sig. other…every day… :o

hm teaching english in japan is nice ^^, u don’t actually need to know japanese heh, just don’t know if they pay enough for living or pay _just_ enough to pay the bills and nothing else.

scottfrye> yeah, u don’t actually need a certificate for web freelance. if you like to ‘play around’ with webdesign, you should try some certificate on graphic design ^^
its pretty interesting and more vast than just doing web(also the range of works you could apply are better too)

as it goes for myself… well, i’m struggling to select a few things to watch before leaving. my HD that used to be full all the time… i have deleted a few things and i’m still deleting stuff. things i dont feel like watching right now but maybe when i come back

so… i’ve deleted like 20 anime eps and i’m still half way through it (with 3 days left XD)
    30% packing done.

i’ve put my university on hold for now(btw, its a graphic design course heh). gonna work in japan aiming for some money, culture and hoping to learn some japanese in the process (yeah, its more like a peon job, but pays really good =p)

but when i return.. i’ll be kinda like in the same situation you are describing right now =(

and after graduating from university there’s two options i think

1 find a job>start paying bills by myself > keep on living on another state, watching and dloading anime at will(the university is 400km away from my parents home =p)

2 unable to find a job> unable to pay the bills> return to my parents home > crap income/not rly dloading much anime and stuff

yeah, life hits hard for an anime fan. soon or later it should happen for most of us. unless you’re a lucky son’of a @#$1 and got a easy going life =_=

well, i hope things turn out for good to you hinano ^^
    g’luck =p

Our situations are so similar it’s freaky. :) I also have a BA in psychology and am almost finished with my MA in developmental psychology. I already went on an on in my comments in your last post about not being able to find work, so I won’t go into it again. :D

One month really isn’t too long. I’ve been on an off with a temp job since October and it took me 5 months to even land that. I had a friend who was unemployed for a good 7-8 months before he got something. From what everyone has told me and from what I’ve experienced, finding anything can take time, especially if you’re like me and don’t want some crummy job (i.e., retail or service). Even now, the guy who was my boss… he’s probably no more than 5-6 years older than me and I probably have more education than he does, yet he gets benefits, paid vacation, and better pay. Stick with it, you’ll find something eventually. The only advice I can give is not to be too picky about what’s there. I made a list of stuff I definitely would NOT do and then went hunting.

Psychology is either a blessing or pure evil, but it depends on what exactly you want to do. If you want to stay focused on psychology, it’s can be pretty tough. But if not, there are a lot more opportunities out there (which I’ve only recently learned about). I want to do research, but the jobs are very limited and you have to know people. Have you checked with listings at various universities or colleges? They usually have listings for entry level positions targeted a students and recent grads. Also, have you listed your resume on Monster.com? It didn’t work for me, but I had a friend who actually landed his current job because he posted there.

I hope you don’t leave the blog world, but I fully understand the real world can be a crappy place. Best of luck to you and I’m sure something will eventually turn up whatever that may be!

You should try to wrangle your family into paying for insurance, since most likely they end up footing the bill for anything anyway.

Though I found out you can get major medical for only about $30 a month, which isn’t so bad unless…well, unless you have no income.

Forgot to mention that after the economy picked back up my wife did get out of temping and back into management work, so I think there’s light at the end of the tunnel–the economy just goes through these slow spells where finding a job is a real nightmare, then a year later everyone’s hiring like crazy.

Although I wonder sometimes if the trend towards offshoring makes it harder to find entry-level jobs in the US, in IT in particular–where I work now, we fill positions that don’t need much experience out of our India office, and when we have open reqs for staff in the US, it’s almost always for someone with 5-10 years experience. Today, I simply wouldn’t be able to get the job that I got 12 years ago when I got out of college, because that position is now overseas. If every company thinks the same way, eventually there won’t be any experienced people to hire stateside…

I completely forgot to comment when this first came out, but I wanted to give you some advice since to improve your chances of find a perm job if that’s your intention.

Typical problems usually occur on the onset, which is the resume. If that’s poorly written, then that’s a big reason for rejection right there. If you’re not getting any responses back based off sending resume, you may consider re-writing it to make yourself more accessible. Just don’t lie, because smart people will catch you and there’s a lot of them out there pretending otherwise. lolol

Someone at my previous job told me once that someone serious about finding a good job needs to treat that as a full-time job itself. That means putting in about 8 hours a day applying for jobs. It sounds tedious and perhaps extraneous, but the more I thought about it as I was unemployed for about 10 months, the more I realized it was true. Are you sending a generic resume out to all the postings? You may want to change your resume out to reflect the position you are applying to so that your emphasize the skills required for the job. Same goes for a cover letter, which you should have. Also consider looking for jobs in newspapers and magazines and be on the internet everyday looking for postings.

I’ve written quite a lot, so if you want more advice on this stuff let me know and I’ll write more. Just keep in my that if you have to move home, you’re problems keeping you from finding the job you want may perhaps follow you there as well, so it’s best to fix them now.

Anyway, congrats on finding the temp job at least. Hopefully you’ll find a permanent job you’ll like eventually.

  52. HinanoNo Gravatar UNITED STATESon 03 Mar 2007 at 5:32 pm

Thanks for the tips. I usually apply to HR Admin positions only so my skills/resume/cover letter are the same for all of their requirements. I know about resumes and lying, I worked in HR and I’ve had to look through many of them. (Thats the up side!)

Frankly for me getting calls about jobs is not the problem. It’s passing the interview that I have issues…and most of the time is “you dont have experience in ______, and we need someone with a solid background in _____” Sometimes I wanna be like “Then why did you call me for an interview you idiots! @_@” But yea that’s what it’s been haha.

Hopefully this job will give me more experience to buff up my resume for the future.
