Byousoku 5CM - Sakura Sad Boys in Snow

Published by Hinano at 8:50 pm under Rants & Raves

Whoaaaa can’t the creator of Hoshi no Koe ever make a HAPPY ENDING? Would it kill you to spend more time on your story instead of showing us pretty backgrounds for 24 minutes? I mean I realize background is important in an episode and all but why must you sacrifice story and character design? Seriously the character look like aliens to me. I know I’m gonna get bricked by all the fanboys telling me that this is the best thing EVAR11111!!!!ONE but honestly let’s step back and compare this to other “sad X in snow“. The whole time I sat there going “Am I watching that Hedgehog’s Dilemma episode of Eva? Is Shinji on another train? What?” Then he FINALLY gets to see the girl in the last like 4 minutes, eats her bento, kisses her and then he moves away to Kagoshima. I looked it up on google maps and it’s like WAYYYYY down there. Probably involves a flight or so (perhaps the distance from New Jersey to South Carolina.) Oh yea and to add on to the emoness (and sad boys in snow) he’s at the prime emotional age of 13. I am told there’s a couple more episodes but I can only imagine more sad X in snow/rain/sakura trees/trains….with no happy ending.

Well at least the backgrounds were pretty! (And I got a not so detailed make out scene.)

Looks like someone around here needs to relax, it’s just a internet broadcast, pplz.

Well it seems like everyone was really hyping it up a few months ago which is why when I finally saw it…it felt like a big disappointment

There is still this little thing called msn. Or a convenient gathering place called heaven. All we need is a little cyanide.

Yea I was gonna say when did this thing take place? Why don’t they have cell phones? I mean who WRITES letters anymore ?

And it provided exactly what people hyped it for, great background animation, no? Then what exactly did you expect?

Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure they were hyping the actual FILM that will be shown in theaters March 3rd, not this.

    >>Why don’t they have cell phones? I mean who WRITES letters anymore?>>

If I got my information correct, the movie takes place in early 90s when little things like msn didn’t exist and not every had cellphones at that point.

oh okay I wasn’t sure when this whole thing took place and I was also like “what is this 1990?” hehe.

I though everyone hyped the whole thing in general….cause hey the background animation was awesome 2 thumbs up! :D There’s gonna be a film? I’m not familiar with what this whole thing is about other than seein a few people mention it on their blog.

This is the first 1/3 of a film. I have yet to watch the short.

OOh okay! Well that makes sense. I though this was like…a self contained episode. (I guess I shoulda done my research ^^;) Maybe with more stuff it’s actually pretty good….

I recall Takaki picking up some magazine or book that reads “1995″.. now to watch it again. :)

My wife mostly concur with Hinano’s original assessment of this movie episode. She feels strongly that too much time is wasted on the background and not enough time was spent on visual character developement. Although she heard the narrations, she felt most of the scenes to be either excessive or not correlating well with the content of the monologue.

Oh! She felt very strongly that it was hard to symphathize with the emotions stated in the narration for we can’t see them well on the face of the characters.

I agree with your wife all the way haha. The background is supposed to “support” the theme, not swallow it up!

Well, given his other shows, maybe there was a reason he didn’t show the character’s as much as he should? Personally, I’m going to wait until all three parts are out before deciding whether this was a purely anesthetic scenery endeavor.

I still enjoyed watching it very much - including all the pretty background scenes. Though they should have focused on the character’s more, I still did not feel that it overly detracted from the film, yet. They spent enough time on the scenery it was noticeable, but not enough that it made me dislike the film entirely.
