Kanon - 15
Everytime I watch Kanon I have the urge to run into my freezer and throw a taiyaki into the oven. This time I managed to hold myself back (mainly because I was full of grapes I had eaten earlier.) Anyway this “kinda” concludes the Mai arc. The actual conclusion is with her and Sayuri graduating but I guess they are saving that for a little later and probably after Shiori’s arc. In the TOEI version of the concluding episode for some reason they used really THICK lines around everyone so it looked really weird.
So the mystery of the bunny ears has been solved. They completely cut it from the TOEI version (what do they have against bunny ears?) so when I saw the CGs I was like wtfBBQ? The other thing is the snow bunny thing was only something that Nayuki had created so the fact that it was in Mai’s story really surprised me. Also because they actually “showed” Mai’s power it made it cooler rather than “the power to create crazy monsters that destroy school buildings.”
The image above also made more sense when shown in context of the anime. This was also cut out from the TOEI version.
Here comes the real big difference. In KyoAni Mai stabbed herself and then was rescued by her “youthful spirit” (I’m getting ready for my Naruto kick so I’m using Gai Sensei words.) However in Toei, before she could stab herself, Sayuri (who I guess got better) appeared out of nowhere and “saved” Mai from doing more than shredding her school uniform. Wow um biggggg difference. I’m gonna go with KyoAni in assuming that their version is the one which properly followed the story.
In the final scene Mai’s bunny ears fell off in the Kyo Ani version. That made me sad.
And if you played the eroge, prior to this would also be where Yuuichi screws Mai various times on a school desk. Sometimes I watch this and think to myself “How the hell do they manage to creatively fit SEX into a scene like this? I don’t remember in the game since I had no idea what the hell was going on.”
Upcoming Attractions: It looks like they’re gonna start the Shiori arc and also the Akiko gets sick/passes out/Ayu takes care of her arc.

Hinano, I really appreciate you doing comparisons of this not only with the TOEI anime, but the game as well. Many of us readers/bloggers (or in my case, blogger on hiatus) have seen the first series, but never played the game. So it’s great to see what was there originally, what TOEI changed, and what KyoAni has changed. It’s also better than just an episode summary because I already know what’s going on.
In terms of this episode, I’ve come to appreciate the Mai and Sayuri arc as helluva lot more than the first time around. KyoAni is really re-shapping the way my perspective of Kanon, when before I though the original series had potential, but was mediocre at best.

You know I have the same burning question for all of KEY’s eroges (having played none of them). One moment we’re tearing up and the next we are supposed to get a boner from table sex?
I don’t get it either.
Anyhow, this was a great ep. I almost cried at the zoo-bunnies part. The resolution felt a little rushed but a story well told overall.
lol @ Mai in bunny ears… so he really made her wear these… H-mode on: did she carry these in game during sex scene?
I also had really liked the TOEI Kanon despite the chins, but now I’m watching this and the TOEI one seems like such trash to me…especially since they cut out important stuff like this from the Mai arc.

They don’t even try. According to most players I’ve asked, Key’s sex scenes are haphazardly tacked on (and are terribly written even by eroge standards) in order to satisfy market demands. In Japan, there’s little demand for interactive novels outside the adult game market
In the “All Ages” version of Kanon, all sexual encounters were deleted except for the single situation that actually fits in place.
When creating Clannad, Key made the game they wanted (all ages rating, no tacked on sexual encounters that come out of the blue), but naturally, many eroge consumers were disappointed.
Which scene are you referring to? I don’t know much about the All Ages version.
I’m told that it occurs in Nayuki’s story. Key kept the event, but removed any explicit content (kind of a before and after depiction instead).

*Mai friggin’ commits suicide* I spitout all the water I just drank at that exact moment, I understood the action in the end but at the time I was all “What the F***??” I expected something to happen but not that!
But seriously, the whole Mai and Sayuri thing, it has bizzare take on me. Mai and Sayuri love each other right?
Now I’m looking at myself from an outside perspective, I realize that at any other time I’d have atleast one stray dirty thought there. But I didn’t?
Probably because its so serious.
Oh, and the whole “zoo” thing was awesome.
One last thing, the episode preview shows that the show really moves on to new things, I know it must be done as there are other characters but… it doesn’t seem like we’ll ever see Mai and Sayuri again next episode or even a glance, or even… ever again?

so at least when Yuichi takes off with “destined” girl, they have each other to rely on…
Hinano: Sorry to disappoint, but the yuri scene is actually just Yuuichi fantasising, it doesn’t last long, isn’t particularly explicit, and is restricted to a single CG.

Where exactly is this yuri scene in the game? I have the CG but where was it?!
