NHK ni Youkoso! - 24 (Finale)

Published by Hinano at 7:14 pm under N.H.K. ni Youkoso!

Well the week of ending shows has begun, starting with NHK. I remember when we all started watching this and got all excited about seeing another show involving anime otaku and hermits…but seems as the end neared only a few of us (especially bloggers) has pulled through. So Sato finally arrived at the cliff and didn’t see Misaki. As he started yelling regrets to himself, he found her sitting near a “don’t jump off” (someone correct me my kanji sucks) sign. She explained to him how she felt no one needed her, hence why she started the Hikki project. However, Sato then goes on to tell her that she shouldn’t die, that he needs her, and that he loves her.

While she tried to fall off, Sato caught her and brought her back over the edge. While he was telling her that she shouldn’t die, he became delirious and started telling her about the NHK. He started going on about how it’s their fault that he became a hikki, and it’s their fault that Misaki wanted to kill herself. He started pointing towards the edge of the cliff saying “Look there they are!” and Misaki, who had calmed down, was all like “Wtf? I don’t see anything!” He then said there was a monster and he was going to “destroy it” by taking his own life. He started running towards the cliff and then jumped off…simultaneously realizing that he really does love Misaki.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) this seems to be a popular suicide spot, so they built a fence below for all jumpers to land on so that they don’t die. Sato lands on the fence going “WTF!?!?” and then he looks up and sees Misaki crying from above. He yells how idiotic he feels and then climbs back up. Up on the hill Misaki slaps him on the head and yells at him saying that he shouldn’t die either. Honestly I think the direction for this & last scene was stupid. I mean the Misaki part was good, but having Sato do the same thing was idiotic to me.

In the end Sato ends up moving out of his apartment complex because apparently they are destroying or remodeling it or something. I think he moves closer to his job in the city. He ends up also being Misaki’s tutor because she goes back to high school while he begins attending college. Yamazaki has been doing omimai’s that his mom insisted on, and turns out he found the girl he will marry and she looks exactly like that girl he liked back in Tokyo. Hitomi senpai had a baby finally as well. Misaki gives Sato another contract that’s also titled NHK but it means something like “An organization where basically if you try to die, I’m going with you, you bastard!” So that way neither will try to kill themselves etc. Sato signs it and Misaki tells him “NHK ni Youkoso!” The end.

Final Thoughts: Well not the best ending, but I still prefer it over the misery of the manga. I haven’t read the manga but it’s stuff that I’ve been hearing. Overall I think I enjoyed the series. It was a bit slow between likes eps 11-16, but before and after were really good so this is definitely a series I will probably want to rewatch again some day.

I felt that the scene on the cliff was actually well done. Satou goes off to die because in his delusion he believes that this will save Misaki. But simultaneously he is also realizing that he really does love Misaki. So when he hits the “catcher”, he is shocked because he can’t have his “tragically romantic” ending. But he is also coming out of his delerium and goes back to Misaki.

All-in-all, I liked the ending a lot, and I overall I was really impressed with the entire series. They made a great transition from social satire/black humor to very warm and sweet pathos. In the end, both Satou and Misaki are still very damaged, and may never really get over their problems, but they have found a way to cope, and in the end, that is pretty much what the World is really about anyway.

BTW - Thanks for taking the time to write such good summaries. I find your work very useful to read over once I’ve watched a raw because it helps me to pick up on the phrases that I may have missed during my viewing.

Ewok and Hinano - I’m ashamed of both of you regarding the “God” at the end. Go off and re-watch “Mononoke Hime” for the real origin of that “giant”…

Thanks for the write-ups. I was hoping for a “happy” ending, though I had to guffaw at the role reversals of Misaki and Sato as pupil and tutor.

Time fer me to watch the remaining episodes since I’ve taken a break from pretty much all of the ones I’ve been watching and get back to “blogging” (or polluting as I like to call it.)

Oh, did Misaki ever change shirts or is she still wearing the same one? Ah, never mind. Who am I to talk, I’ve got 5 copies of the same shirt.

How ironic that I will be spending the week of ending episodes in a place in Japan where I won’t have access to internet, BS-i, or anime channels.

You should put up a poll like JPMeyer’s on your page too. I’m sure the majority of your readers, like me, will vote for the same choice.

LOL I spoiled myself while reading this. And what’s with the “invisible monster” screencap. Is this homage of any sort to SHnY? XD

Misaki and Tatsuhiro decide to rename from the otaku entertainment to the life problem solving meeting but still keep the N.H.K under new name.
