Kanon - 10

Yay my 300th post is a Kanon one! So this week was the concluding episode of the Makoto arc. The difference between KyoAni and TOEI was dramatic of course. First of all the deterioration of Makoto wasn’t as concentrated as in this one. Also in KyoAni she was still able to somewhat talk and to add to the “drama” she called Akiko “mother”. All the events (such as finding out she’s not human etc) was all sorta done within a 10-15 min period in ep. 10 of the TOEI version. Also Amano seemed nicer in the KyoAni version than in the TOEI one.

Personally I’m glad that KyoAni followed the game because when I actually played Kanon 4 years ago or whatnot, my Japanese was pretty terrible and I didn’t know what was going on. (I obviously used one of those Japanese websites that listed what to click and when to click it lol.) So yea watching the anime now helped explain why the hell she was standing there with a white blanket on her head.

It also helped explain why the hell she was crying. Also I just want to make a point all the scenes here without a TOEI screencap to go with them..were obviously not in the TOEI version. Thank god for remakes right? I can now justify on why this series has 24 episodes instead of 13.

Also I think when I played the game I thought she was sleeping. I had no idea she was dying. How sad.

This part is what confused me. I thought that you get this “ending” if you say “end with the Makoto route”. However, since I assume the ultimate goal here is Ayu, is this just a “what if there was a miracle” ending? I didn’t see Makoto in next week’s preview so I can only assume that KyoAni just did this to either “show the remaining CG animated” or “show the good end.” Funny is the whole time before this, I was sitting there going “when is she gonna lie down in the grass with the cat” hahahaha.
Okay so this is a screencap from the TOEI version. In the TOEI one, when they all went out they celebrated “Makoto’s birthday” instead of her getting married to Yuuichi like she did in this one. Before Makoto’s “death” she also asked (yes asked not mumbled or howled) Yuuichi to take her to that “forest”. And it wasn’t bright and sunny, it was a pretty thick snow storm outside. Yuuichi had carried her on his back and then he felt something and before he knew it, she disintegrated into a bunch of sparkles and then we saw her bells fall to the ground. Yuuichi also yelled out MAKOTOOOOOO!!!! I expected him to do that in the KyoAni one but he didn’t

Sounds like the toei’s version is a little too dramatic while kyoani when for melodrama.
Watching Kanon is kind of like watching NASCAR…
You don’t watch it for the racing; you watch it for the wrecks.
Episode 10 was akin to the “big one” at Talledega.
I personally wished they’d save Makoto’s wreck for later because to me it feels more wrecked than Sayuri and Mai’s combined.
Wow the KyoAni one seems so much better and more realistic than the Toei one. I still wouldn’t mind seeing the Toei one though.
Heh, I suddenly lost interest on episode 9.
Did you notice that when Yuiichi and Makoto went up the hill it seemed to be sunny and there was so green with growing plants. And after Makoto disappeared there was instead snow on the ground .. Just like most of the fairy stories where people did not see what was reality …
Congrats on getting into 9Rules!
「KANON」好きなら「AIR」もいけそうですね。

Hm where did my previous comment go O_o;
dsgong: I wish they had saved Makoto’s stuff until the end, it’s more tragic than Mai’s or Sayuri’s stories.
Danny: the only thing you gotta put up with in the TOEI is the massive chins
Rets: Whhryy??????
Rupert: I didn’t notice, woops, but that makes sense I guess. I did wonder why the hell it was green & sunny at the beginning though.
ひでぽん:AIRならもう見たんだ(2004年に)。さいごで泣いちゃいました。;_;映画も見ました(そこも泣いちゃった。。)
I totally cryed my eyes out watching this episode. ;_;
okay, okay I watched it. The death was very meh to me, but I found the scene where Makoto was trying to say yuuichi’s name a lot more touching. Watching her struggle to survive was a lot worse than any death they could have thought up for her, shrug. I didn’t cry watching though, but I did cry watching AnH08.
Sorry, I’m pwning your comments section but I forgot to comment to Rupert. I think that the spring on the hill is part of the Makoto miracle. She liked spring the most and so when she miricalized(new word), I guess it became spring on the hill. Then naturally the hill ceased to be in perpetual spring once she’s gone. I don’t really know though since I’m not really that focused or anything.
like Retsgip, i lost interest much earlier than ep. 9… i think i stopped watching after ep. 7 or 8. I just visit this website to get a recap of what happened.
I don’t really post recaps more like comparisons of the game/TOEI animation. I think randomC or memento’s sites might be better if you want actual episodic summaries
somehow it felt like a very fairy tale magical episode … but then at the same time it was very sad …. make me want to cry
The grassy hill reverting back to a snowy hill when Makoto disappeared was a very nice touch. It was bothering me that there was a hill with no snow in bleak winter.
I chose a really bad time to watch episode 9 and 10, got hit really bad and the only thing that’s keeping me sane is that my parents are at home so I have to control myself. Geez…
I don’t know whether to say Air was worse or this arc was worse but both made me feel totally horrible. I guess it’s time to take a break.
Somehow it just felt quite anti-climatic to me. I expected Makoto’s death to be more…dramatic, but in the end she just vanished without a trace after so much build up.
I agree with Retsgrip that the part, where Makoto was struggling to say out Yuuichi’s name, was much more touching.
But overall, Kyoani pulled off the degeneration till the final moments of Makoto really well. Yuuichi seemed to overcome Makoto’s death pretty quickly though.
Hrmm. My post disappeared.
Oh well, the actual part where she disappeared wasn’t as painful as the buildup to it. Especially the parts where she struggles to say something to Yuuichi. The heavy implications of “if these things happen, she’s going to…” was just too painful for me to ignore. I suppose the moment(s) which hit me the hardest was when Makoto meets Amano and barely manages to squeak out her own as well as Yuuichi’s name. The part where she told Yuuichi that she wanted to marry him was also a very hard thing to bear.
I am trying very hard not to re-enact the scene in my head. So far I’ve managed to prevent myself from contemplating too much. phew.
I thought the Toei version had Makoto call Akiko “mother” just before Yuuichi took her to the hill…
YEa I did mention that in the first paragraph. I just didnt specify when she said it. the point being is, she could actually talk.
