Kanon - 05
As usual TOEI fails this week by cutting out some game CG related scenes and/or changing it to their liking. First of all the scene with Makoto in the bathtub is missing from this episode therefore it is not in my little screencap below. Although there was a scene of naked Yuuichi walking into the bathroom (thanks guys!) it was to a bathtub full of Miso Soup that Makoto made for Yuuichi. I like the fact that in the TOEI version she managed to get away with so many pranks on him, yet in the KyoAni she fails EVERY TIME.
I wonder if the KyoAni guys like dojikko like Mikuru and therefore have modeled Makoto after her? Also her voice sounds SOOOO different compared to the one in TOEI. Is everyone SURE the seiyuu is the same? I didn’t actually check but whoa the difference is ridiculous when you listen to one right after the other. I’m not really happy that KyoAni is adding new outfits to the girls. I mean where is Makoto getting all these clothes from? Is she raiding Nayuki’s wardrobe or something?
By the way based on all your comments last week I put my Taiyaki in a toaster. Actually it tastes pretty good (but only if you put it on high setting and do it twice otherwise the red bean paste remains cold.) I’m down to like 1 taiyaki left but no fear I will look for another bag this Saturday when I visit the Korean store for my weekly batch of vegetables! Oh yea in the KyoAni version, we didn’t actually “see” the monsters Mai was fighting, while in the TOEI one it was this cheesy thing with yellow eyes. Also I like how KyoAni went into detail about Makoto and the manga while in TOEI she just took one of Yuuichi’s.
I guess that’s the positive side of the 24 episode thing. Sometimes it can be boring, but sometimes it really adds character and color to the story, and when comparing it with the TOEI episode, the TOEI one seems rather empty. I hope all you first time Kanon watchers got some hints about Makoto from Mai at the end about “be nice to her.” Looks like they will start developing that next week.

You bring up a great point; it’s actually more fun to watch Makoto when some of her pranks actually hit.
Watching Kanon is like eating rice cakes - not unpleasant, but not all that filling either. Makoto is toned down too much, if you ask me.
Yea it’s almost as if they made her this clumsy dumb airhead. This is prolly the downside of the KyoAni version is they’ve focused SO Much on the characterization, it’s almost as if they’ve overkilled some stuff.

So great. Also, KyoAni needs to cant their camera down a little more, so we can see Makoto’s … and also for the slice of audience that you represent, Yuuichi’s … >.>
ps looking at your comparison screenshots, Makoto is a lot more stacked in the game.

Well the only point to criticise is the camera setting, why do they show the feet/or something irrelevant while people are talking, kind of strange.
They did in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu as well, what is the goal of this, do they want to save budget, or what?
memo> I assume its a KyoAni thing since both series are animated by them. I think its probably to just make the scene more “interesting” rather than seeing the same camera angle.

Maybe I should order a taiyaki mold on internet and make one. By the way, there is a joke in Korea, that I am not sure of its existence in Japan, about taiyaki: There is no ‘tai( as in fish )’ in ‘taiyaki’. It means you cannot put too much value on mere name of something. However, I have seen a Korean vendor that actually sold taiyaki with shredded oden ( which is made from fish ) as the filling; wasn’t that tasty but adequate enough to serve as emergency meal.
