Kanon - 04

Published by Hinano at 9:28 pm under Kanon

Sorry in both versions they were scrolling from top to bottom of Mai

Hm okay…the part with Makoto and Ayu confused me. Perhaps it was a hint about two ****** being so close to each other. (*’s for spoilers ;)) What the hell is konyaku anyway? It looks like a moldy sponge. Is it like tofu or something? I don’t think I’ve ever eaten it. By the way TAIYAKI IS OVERRATED!! I bought some at the Korean store (okay so it’s like Korean taiyaki but its the same thing) and you know it’s not that good. I mean it’s okay, like yea red bean paste inside a baked thing but it was NOT as good as Ayu makes it seem. Other hints this week include Kaori’s “trouble at home” *cough cardboard cutter hello?* and Nayuki’s “She pushes herself too hard.” Does anyone else feel sorry for Nayuki? I think the first time I saw/played Kanon I didn’t like her because she always seemed on Yuuichi’s back but…now I re-analyze everything and really she’s ALWAYS the one left behind. I really feel awful for her, she’s like at the butt of everything. (And if you’ve played the hentai game, you probably get the pun too.)

My only disappointment is we saw 2 seconds of Mai last week…and 2 this week. I thought we’d see more ah well.

You probably ate it cold didn’t you? I betting the reason why Kanon Tayaki is so good is because it usually fresh and warm when the characters eat it

Yeah, I ain’t a fan of taiyaki either. It’s the red bean paste…I hate that stuff. Unfortunately it’s in a lot of Korean pastries, and I love that stuff. The only time I really find red bean paste to be tolerable is when it’s served as patbingsoo. Great summer treat.

^For what Konyaku is. My grandma makes a couple dishes with em all the time. Just think of it as a firmer, tasteless gelatin.

LOL! Ayu does make taiyaki look very good. although i never had it. but i’d try “most” food once. maybe i’ll trek to the korean store and get some. hmm.. i guess i can how you can feel sorry for Nayuki. i just found her kinda annoying from the first kanon.

I won’t speak for taiyaki, but I will say that expecting a frozen-then-microwaved pastry to come out well is asking a lot!

Remember that Ayu said in ep. 1 that taiyaki tastes best when it’s fresh. :D

  11. anne UNITED STATESon 27 Oct 2006 at 12:07 am

oh yes, i remember. too bad there’s no taiyaki vendors where i live.

  12. dsong UNITED STATESon 27 Oct 2006 at 3:08 am

Taiyaki is pretty decent when fresh…

However, it can’t compare to a “beef bowl”…

Somehow I get the feeling Yuuichi’s making the wrong choice, at least when it comes to food.

It is possible to make Taiyaki at home, but it won’t look like a taiyaki. Easiest way to do so is to make two waffle, put some sweetened red bean on top of one of them, cover it with other waffle, and eat it like a sandwich. The batter for taiyaki is almost identical to waffle batter so, ingredient wise.

If you have to do everything right, the above links shows one of the places where you can buy the mold, and they also sell special powder for it. If you can’t get those powder for the batter mixture, you can use a pancake or waffle batter of your choice, and it might taste better that way. As for Sweetened red bean, you can buy the red bean itself and boil them to make it, which isn’t too hard but is messy, and doing it this way taste better than the can you can buy where ever they sell Japanese or Korean food products.

Finally, don’t microwave frozen Taiyaki! It just won’t taste right if you do so. Use your oven. If you are having trouble with temperature setting and burn the thing instead of warming it, use aluminium foil to wrap it up, before heating; this will take longer and may make your taiyaki soggy if there are lots of ice within your taiyaki, so I don’t recommend enlisting aluminium foil’s help. The best oven for taiyaki is your trusty small sized toaster oven. I recommend playing around with various temperature setting for optimal taste, for the instruction on package is probably for any bread like product that can go into oven.

In fact, my wife and I are planning to look for a Taiyaki mold whe we visit store Mitsuwa in Chicago. If we can’t find one there, we might experiment making one with Sandwich maker or Waffle maker.

I like red bean paste, but when it comes to Taiyaki, I prefer the filling to be cheese. :)
    Cheers.

haha thanks for all the taiyaki tips guys
I actually was looking on where to buy one of those molds and I didn’t see any at either of the 2 Korean stores I was at (hence my surprise of even finding the frozen kind)
I’m too lazy/tired after work to use the oven though so I’ll prolly just end up eating it microwaved anyways until I buy the batter/mold to make it properly on the weekends :D

Just watched the show, some answers, some more mysteries… Why Makoto seems afraid of Ayu? Mai is oficially (from the preview) Demon Hunter (cool - Buffy tVS anyone?). She uses european longsword rather than katana though… didn’t notice in the split-second of the last episode. Akiko reminds me of my own mother in the way she treats strange friends me and my oneechan keep bringing to our home :) Makoto nighttime guerilla vs Yuuichi made me laugh, but Yuuichi was cruel to force her to eat something like that… well at least he didn’t hint to akiko about the jam :P

    Hello.
    I from japan.

    Korean taiyaki (So bad)
    jananese taiyaki (very good)

    Cheers.

    とりあえず冷凍の全部食べたまでオーブンつかいます。(汗

Mircrowaved frozen taiyaki is like borscht made with cold water and moldy vegetables.

Explain the difference between them to your best ability. I have never heard of ‘jananese taiyaki’.

    1. Please list the difference in ingredient.
    2. Difference in mixture ratio
    3. Difference in cooking method
    4. Difference in cooking time.

alafista> I only have Korean stores near me, no Japanese ones :(

  28. wontaek UNITED STATESon 29 Oct 2006 at 10:10 pm

Most Korean stores carry Taiyaki packaged by Japanese companies. I have been to many Japanese owned grocery stores and is certain that most of taiyaki sold in Korean store and Japanese store is of same Japanese brand. So I am very surprised by ひでぽん(hidepon)’s claim that taiyaki from same company would taste different if bought in stores not run by Japanese.

  29. Hinano UNITED STATESon 29 Oct 2006 at 10:15 pm

I know what you mean, as I can buy Yakisoba and Ramune at the korean store, however the taiyaki i found specifically is a korean brand one, I couldn’t actually find any Japanese kind

  30. wontaek UNITED STATESon 30 Oct 2006 at 1:57 am

Fundamentally, there shouldn’t be anything different from Korean Brand and Japanese Brand when it comes to Taiyaki. They use same batter and same fillings, although in Korea, if you are very lucky, you might find taiyaki with different fillings ( the good ones are sugar-sesame mix, imitation cheese with bits of imitation meat, and whitened sweet beans ) that is offered as option alongside regular taiyaki. The Korean brand taiyaki I saw in Korean store was a cheaper variety that cost about half of what Japanese brand would cost, and I strongly suspect that is what you had. Still, it is highly probable that both brand is actually made in China and only difference between them is the packaging; Korean brand is cheaper for it use cheaper package, uses cheaper distribution routes, and is in larger quantity. You might face bankruptcy if you eat Japanese brand taiyaki at the rate seen by Ayu in Kanon.

Honestly if you’ve tried freshly made taiyaki you’ll see why it’s good.
Some places (okay I’m on vacation in Taiwain..so err yes asian countries…) with the people toasting the taiyaki from batter and filling it, in front of you ared awesome. There’s flavour variation too, I’ve tried red bean, banana, chocolate, custard and other miztures
    taiyaki=win
