Kanon - 01

Published by Hinano at 6:38 pm under Kanon

My approach to blogging this will be an analytical one. And by that I mean, I will be comparing it with the game and the 2002 TOEI anime. I’m sure there are other fellow bloggers who will be doing summaries and as much as I love it, I don’t feel like regurgitating them for this series. First and foremost I want to say the animation of course made me drool but with good things come bad things.

First of all I want to point out that Ayu is my favorite character. I even cosplayed her (which was a big mistake to do in the middle of August 2004.) However, because KyoAni has decided to expand this show from 13 eps to 24 it really feels like I’m playing the game again. For those who have played the game you can’t say that you disagree. In order to actually be able to fit all the episodes in they have to stretch it out. Frankly I can see why newcomers to Kanon will be like “holy shit they just spent like 5 minutes showing us his house and another 5 minutes walking to school and another 5 minutes running around the town center!” Yes that’s exactly what they did and that’s exactly what you do if you sit there clicking your left mouse button as you scroll through the game.

Is it a bad thing? Well yes and no. As I said, for new Kanon fans they may find this to be a snooze fest and the only thing magnetically attracting about this show is the animation. Kanon has a beautiful story and each girl is equally “sad” in her path but I just wonder if they will take the Ayu route just like TOEI did. (And by that I mean, if they don’t take the Ayu route, heads will roll ) I dunno I’m looking forward to more episodes. I’m a rabid Kanon fangirl, and there’s an AMV remake that awaits me in about 24 weeks! Oh and the other thing I wanted to mention, “Yume no Kakera” bgm that was played during the first few minutes of the show (where Nayuki meets Yuuichi) is like my FAVVVOOORRRITE Kanon BGM. I have like 10 different versions of it! w00t!

Upcoming Attractions: Yuuchi spends 15 minutes meeting people at school and doing…school things or something.

    WTF tom cruise XD

I figure we’ll get the Ayu path. I can’t even imagine Kanon without having the focus on her story.

At the same time, I want to see more Nayuki this time around. If the first episode was any indication of what’s to come, I won’t be disappointed.

Anyway… I’m reminded of the fact I found the story slow the first time around (before the serious stuff kicked in), so I do wonder how new viewers will react to the remake given its even slower pace. Sure, there’s a lot of foreshadowing early on, but it’s only obvious in hindsight. If you didn’t know otherwise, the early episodes could lead you to believe it’s just another standard school life bishoujo anime series.

I have a feeling we wont see any actual “Action” until maybe episode 7 or 8. I really do hope new fans give it a chance or maybe watch the older series so that they realize how great the story really is

  5. Tallonon 05 Oct 2006 at 8:06 pm

Chyea, and i bet there will be a lot of people who stop watching it because of it sticking so closely with the game. This first episode alone turned off a few people i talked to because it moves way too slow for someone who isnt already interested in Kanon and makes it seem pretty bland and cookie cutterish. But it was like that in the original as well and it did amazing, and the game starts out pretty bland as well….so hopefully people dont give up on it, but i bet a huge chunk WILL. Its usually how it works out.

Hell, ive got people telling me they heard Kanon is a hentai and refuse to watch it, wtf? lmao.

Anyway, kanon ftw, hopefully my brother sends me my copy of the game so i can play thru again (again, again, again, again…) at the same time as the show, lmao. Cuz im a bored college student and have nothing to do. Ill probably end up just comparing it to the game and original series as well, its just the only way to go about it really.

And yeah, i cant see them going another route being as how Ayu’s is well….yeah, its the MAIN one, besides its the one with the most Ayu! Too bad theres no Akiko route though.

Sorry for the long comment with nothing useful!

I’m anticipating this tremendously, and I don’t even know why.

I do know that I’m a bit miffed I can’t play the game, since, even though it’s sitting here looking at me, my Japanese isn’t anywhere approaching good enough.

  7. akurashyon 05 Oct 2006 at 9:11 pm

i got interested because i didn’t want to watch the old one because it looks all creepy and the guy looks all weird with his face o_o

everytime i see kanon’s logo/splash it reminds me of kotex is that a good sign or bad sign? T_T, no i’m not kidding btw lol

everyone been anticipating it but i think its because the art is attracting too many people XD

  8. Hinanoon 05 Oct 2006 at 9:13 pm

Tallon: Well Kanon IS hentai….in the PC game rofl. LOL Akiko route, well as long as they dont do the random Mai x Sayuri lesbian thing I’ll be happy….(man that creeped me out in the game)

Mac: I heard the game was translated by a bunch of fans somewhere? Or you can always find a Japanese site with all the guides on what to click (thats how I got through anyway and I CAN read Japanese haha..I guess cause im a girl i cant play eroge? XD)

  9. Chrison 05 Oct 2006 at 9:48 pm

Thank God, it appears that the series will not try and appeal to rabid anime fanboys and will still keep the same charm and real atmosphere from the old series. I’m growing a bit older and anime that are just too”anime” really don’t appeal to me anymore and I’d hate them to change the refreshing realistic feel of the original series. I know some people who are watching this because of Haruhi and are probably expecting more fanboyish fanfare, I fear they will get pretty pissed.

They darn well better have Ayu the ultimate goal…Or I’ll have Yuki alter time/space to change it… Ayu and the spinning to see the backpack…. favorite moment so far….

  11. Badger11on 06 Oct 2006 at 1:23 am

Well, how many of us will watch for the artwork first and foremost? I’m sure that they’ll take the Ayu route, just as long as they include a helluva lot more Makoto. And Nayuki. And a lot more Ayu.

  12. Eleutheriaon 06 Oct 2006 at 3:31 am

The scrolling text about copyright, internets and whatnot over Nayuki’s assets was downright disturbing.

  13. Eleutheriaon 06 Oct 2006 at 3:50 am

ps there’s the jam next episode, there’s your action.

  14. Hinanoon 06 Oct 2006 at 7:00 am

i bet theyll have an episode about Makoto and the Cat too
    Actually the spinning ayu bag scene annoyed me cause it made me feel like theyre really OVERDOING the “ayu moe” thing (and in reverse making her an idiot) ^^;

  15. Voodoomageon 06 Oct 2006 at 11:26 am

Idiot…no… cute… yes…. doing silly things does not make you an idiot…

  16. bakavicon 06 Oct 2006 at 12:20 pm

I felt it was cute because of the natural way of spinning - half-turn at a time, and each turn looks slightly different from the one before.

And silly is cute :) :

    “What wings?”
    Spins slowly.
    Spins faster.
    Yet faster.
    Kyon/Yuuichi’s trademark exsperated sigh.
    “Uguu~I can’t see it~”

  17. Kurisuon 06 Oct 2006 at 3:03 pm

I haven’t neither played the game nor seen the 2002 anime. Is Kanon really THAT great?

  18. Hinanoon 06 Oct 2006 at 5:27 pm

it must be a guy thing, maybe since im a girl im just not seeing it lol

Kurisu, based on the amount of shows in this genre that came out between now and then, you might find it slow and generic but give it a few eps and if you dont like it, we won’t blame ya. this stuff was gold in its time, and although the animation is golden, that alone can’t hold a viewer for too long

  19. Kurisuon 06 Oct 2006 at 6:38 pm

Yeah, I guess Kanon isn’t as fast paced as Bokura Ga Ita, right? ;D

And it can be quite funny sometimes:
“so you’re the bad one here”
“uguu~ i had other reasons, too.”
    “like what?”
    “it’ll take a while if i talk about it…”
    “let’s hear it.”
    “it’s a complicated story.”
    “just say it.”
    “you see… i’m really hungy.”
    “… so?”
    “that’s all.”
    “that’s all?”
    “that’s all.”

And there is Kyon in it too. Hopefully he is as cynical as he was in Haruhi.

Before the season started, I’ve seen on several blogs that a lot of people were looking more forward to Kanon than to Death Note. That kept my wondering. How can a small dating-sim anime compete with the almighty Death Note? Is it due to KyoAni or is Kanon “really” good? I just can’t imagine how Kanon’story can be anywhere near Death Note’s.

  20. Voodoomageon 06 Oct 2006 at 7:49 pm

Kanon , at least for me, is that good….kyoani can’t mess it up right….

  21. GDPon 06 Oct 2006 at 9:00 pm

Ohohoho! I admit I wasn’t interested in the show after looking at a few blog reviews. Things looked a tad slow-paced, and I wasn’t seeing the draw. But the comments here have convinced me to give it a shot.

    >“you see… i’m really hungy.”
    >“… so?”
    >“that’s all.”
    >“that’s all?”
    >“that’s all.”

Hah, gold! ‘Complicated story’ indeed. The humor’s there, now it’s time to see whether the storyline’s intriguing enough to keep me caught.

  22. anneon 07 Oct 2006 at 11:41 pm

i love ayu! she’s also my fav character in kanon. i’m expecting alot on this “new” kanon because it’s longer. the original, i thought, was short. hopefully they don’t mess this up! uguu!

  23. Hinanoon 08 Oct 2006 at 10:38 am

I dont like deathnoe and I will not be blogging it :P Its so morbid and creepy and the fact that Light’s voice is played by Tamaki’s seiyuu from Ouran, really screws with my head cause at any given point I picture him screaming “HARUHIIII!!!!”

  24. Dannyon 09 Oct 2006 at 5:38 am

I haven’t seen the original or played the game but I still loved the episode, and not just the art. It wasn’t boring at all!!

  25. ewokon 09 Oct 2006 at 8:10 am

instantly fell in love with Ayu! uguu…

  26. Kurisuon 09 Oct 2006 at 7:33 pm

What do you not like about Death Note? It has a lot of suspense and a unique story. Would you rather see another crappy h-game adaption like Tsyuokiss?
Tamaki’s seiyuu does in fact do a very good job with Light. You’ll get used to the “new” Tamaki ;)

  27. Hinanoon 09 Oct 2006 at 8:16 pm

I don’t like it. I’m not saying it’s bad, I’m just saying its really NOT my type of show. In fact actually I REALLY like H-game turned to animes, not all but it is a genre that I typically turn my head towards (although I agree Tsuyokiss was horrendous but stuff like Da Capo - season 1 anyway - floated my boat)

  28. anneon 12 Oct 2006 at 5:30 pm

I wonder when the 2nd episode come out? Hinano, even though you don’t like, are you going to continue to blog it?
