Negima!? - 01
Oh man this is so great!
It’s so good to see this show where I don’t have to deal with Negi’s head between some girl’s legs every 5 minutes. All of us have been wondering what exactly this is. A remake? New story? Well kinda both. It starts out showing the whole issue between Nagi (Negi’s dad) and Evangeline. I’ve recently read up to volume 15 of the manga so the show is a lot easier to follow than the previous series did. Anyway Negi still gets the assignment to be a teacher in Japan and that’s where he sets off. Although it seems they’ve really made Anya (his childhood friend) an annoying brat in this one.
Negi comes to the university and gets trampled by a bunch of girls coming to school. This time, Kamo-kun is with him. That’s really the biggest difference is. We’re seeing characters right off the bat that in the manga didn’t appear until a few arcs/stories later. For example, Setsuna is now totally best friends with Konoka and comes to help her wake up a sleeping Asuna.
On her way to school she sees Negima using magic to restore Kamo’s broken tooth. She’s so neboke that she doesn’t think much of it and doesn’t even recall it until the end of the episode. Negi is worried about it however the whole time and thinks that Asuna is prodding him when he introduces himself to class. It seems the other girls are the same as far as their personalities (even Ayaka with the shota-complex.) Asuna still has a crush on Takahata sensei as well.
The story seems to begin with the whole Evangeline is sucking up random girls’ blood arc. She gets Yukie and Konoka and that’s when Negi sees her and tries to stop her. The episode ends there. There wasn’t really an opening or ending in this one but I assume we will see that in the next episode. Most of the episode just took time to show the girls and introduce their names (although it took me like 13 volumes to memorize them and I still can’t remember half the class.) Also the classroom seems to be in a lecture room rather than a typical high school classroom. At the very end they show the baka-rangers in their uniforms lol.
Upcoming Attractions: I dunno it was really silly so it was unclear on what the hell the next episode was gonna be about. (Although I assume it’s a battle between Negi and Evangeline.)

Hey, are you blogging from work!?
Loved it! Totally blew away my expectations, that’s for sure. From seeing the first episode, I can now safely say that SHAFT has officially became my favorite studio overall — seeing as everything they produce turns to gold.
Umm if I never read the manga will I have a hard time following the story?
Well not really, I mean since it’s “adapted” to the manga i doubt anyone that haven’t read the manga going to have trouble with.
like pKjd Negima?! blew away my expectations, i never expected it to be so good!, can’t wait for next week!
Man, the visual style is sooooooo Akiyuki Shinbo - I can’t wait to see this!
Also, I think Negi’s childhood friend was called Anya rather than Anna, or at least it was in the manga ^^;
I never finished watching the version that came a few years go… I am curious to see this version, seems darker and the animation is awesome!
She does have a part time job- I’m sure I heard Setsuna say something about how Asuna should give up her shimbun job if she can’t get up in time for school.
They also reused the random blackboard stuff from Pani Poni… I laughed so hard when it had azumanga daioh stuff on it.
Lastly, Negi is a rich bastard, because in the OP he’s in a fully reclining seat, and that probably means at least business class. Bit of a small plane to go from Wales to Japan, though.
Everyone’s talking about it, but i cant find torrent or whatever, to view this, anyone help?
Aside from the character name errors… nice review. XD
I haven’t really seen the episode itself but from seeing the OP sequence, it does seem a tad “darker” in theme, don’t you think?
Hung: I worked late today

pkjd: It blew mine away as I had no idea wtf it was gonna be about
w1ck: Not necessarily but it might be easier in learning the names/personalities of the girls if you had read it previously
Digi: Haha I totally wrote the summary in a hurry before work so my mind was a blur on her name…but shes annoying anyway XD
Lalita: I actually quite enjoyed the version (from last year lol) before but this is better as I personally do not like the fanservice in Negima
Eleu: Oh really? I musta missed it I was like doing 10 thing at once before watching this episode XD; I noticed the blackboard change but having not seen Azumanga I didn’t particularly realize that was the parody.
Pablo: Try tokyotosho
Megane: I was in a rush!! It is a bit darker, but it only seems that way because they took out most of the “fanservice” which I guess tended to “lighten” the mood
LOL! ooops, and here I thought the old version was very “old”! I have the DVDs, maybe I will try and watch them again… the fanservice was probably what threw me off about the series at the time…
ASUNA IS MOE~
EVA IS MOE~
NEGI IS MOE~
I’m just a newbie to this whole Negima. So Evangeline is a vampire? Well that just elevated this series a bit more for me. I’m a big vampire fan.
Yea she is and shes also a magician like Negi
Wow!!!! This is SO much better than the 1st tv series!
This is Moon Phase meets Pani Poni Dash. Shaft delivers!!!
[...] While the consensus about Negima!? has been mostly positive, I kept thinking it was just me, so I’m glad I’m not the only person on the fence about this. For the record, I liked Pani Poni Dash, but does that necessarily work here? Outside of the nitty-gritty (i.e., the different classroom design, Chamo-kun with Negi from the get-go), this series doesn’t feel like Negima. Yes, the animation quality far exceeds the predecessor, but the Akamatsu feel isn’t fully there. In terms of ASX’s main points: [...]
