Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni - 24
Ok you can stop refreshing my blog now.
j/k
Man my brain is absolutely FRIED from this episode cause I had to go back to the scene between Keiichi and Rena with a freaking dictionary translating terms like “infectuous disease“, “religious fanatic” and “natural selection“. God who knows that kind of vocab anyway?? *head explodes* After spending 10 minutes translating this crap I finally figured out what the hell’s going on (along side the fact that I found an interesting article on google.) Anyway this is gonna be intense. Rena is called in the middle of class by Oiishi who tells her in his police car ™ that Takano and Tomitake have been killed. This appears to take place the same time as the first arc right after they found Tomitake dead. Rena says she doesn’t know that they died. Also make note Oiishi called her “Reina” when he met her.
Rena has a flashback of her at the library and she meets Takano there. She says she met Oyashiro-sama before when she left Hinamizawa. She said that she would cut herself and when she did, these “bugs” (whicih looked like bloody spiders it’s so nasty lol) crawled out of her cuts and when the cuts healed she would cut herself again because she wanted to “let them out”. She almost went insane just recalling this and Takano had to stop her. She gave Rena her notes that she gathered about Hinamizawa and said to not tell anyone about them or “they” might come after her. Rena looked through the notes and figured out a lot of things. The next day she was hiding in the bushes and she pulled Keiichi in with her explaining to him that there’s somebody after her. She said there’s been a van going on this road that is usually deserted and she’s been hiding from them. Rena says that the Oyashiro-thing is BS and it’s being done by people, most likely the Sonozakis. She asks Keiichi not to tell anybody, including Mion, Satoko or Rika because they may or may not be involved. Keiichi says that he’s her friend and he won’t tell anybody.
That day Keiichi calls Rena and asks if she’s okay and this is where they have a long conversation that fried my brain. I’m gonna do my best to explain here so if I’m wrong (and you watched this episode….not necessarily played the game) please correct me. Okay so I found on google some information that Mion’s grandpa used to work in some kind of army thing during the war which involved making canned meat out of dead humans (aka ones killed in the war). This is so gross but this is apparently the reason a lot of outsiders had disliked Hinamizawa because they thought of them as horrible demons who were cannibalistic. With that in mind here’s Rena’s deduction from Takano’s notes: Apparently back in the day the village was struck with an infectuous diease (aka a virus in Rena’s words) and anyone who had this disease could not leave the village becuase of the atmosphere. If they left they’d die. So then one day some guy came along, whose name was Oyashiro and he happened to be a doctor. Unfortunately, he could not find a cure for this disease, so instead they came up with a “temporary” solution to not let anyone IN
the village, nor to let anyone OUT of the village. This is why the village became isolated and all these rumors spread about curses and shit. So basically this turned a bunch of people into religious fanatics and they named their god “Oyashiro-sama”. So basically anyone with the disease would also be killed which I guess killed off the disease completely in the village. And even though the disease no longer causes people to die if they leave the village nor are there people left who have it, the fanatics want it to be thought of this way anyway. In otherwords, they are trying to revive the “Oyashiro-sama” belief. Anyone who found out about this would be killed and this is what they would call “Oyashiro-sama’s curse”. They would also apparently gut the person’s entrails to create a vaccine, although Keiichi thought that they ate the entrails. (Lawl episode 9 flashbacks anyone?) Apparently this vaccine actually did create a resistance for the disease, and perhaps that’s what was in all of those syringes we’ve seen up to now. So this would be what they called the legend of the “devil’s and human blood mixing”. This would be the reference of having “demon” blood mentioned by Shion/Mion/whatever. That demon, would be the parasite that caused this disease. Keiichi then said that if people outside find out that all of this curse crap is fake and that there’s no disease, their religious beliefs will be crumbled. So in conclusion Rena says, they are now once again trying to revive the disease and spread it all over the village, to prove that this whole Oyashiro thing is real…hence why perhaps those syringes are filled with deadly shit. *brain blows up*
So anyway I guess since those van guys know that Rena knows their secret they’re totally after her. At the end of the episode they come intot he classroom to look around and bring a fake package with a fake phone number. Rena dials the number and gets a not in service message and realizes that they’re after her just as she thought. They are probably the same people who killed Takano because she obviously knew too much. So in otherwords, religious fanatics (aka the Sonozakis) are the root of all this village’s problems.
Upcoming Attractions: Keiichi clubs Rena to death?? At least that’s what the preview image showed ![]()

Rene would be making an infamous reference to Section 731 of the Imperal Japanese Army who was active in Harbin, Northeastern China (Heilongjiang province today, close to Manchukuo). It is a very contraversial issue. They performed biological experiments on human of inhumane scale and nature.
Yea I didn’t remember the exact name of it, but I do recall hearing something about biological experiements and “bacterial weapons” or something of the sort
Hmm i’m interested in what the preview actually shows and if it’s being misunderstood cause i’ve seen images that would lead me to believe that something like that would be saved for episode 26.
Well for all I know, that could be Satoshi not Keiichi. I just made the assumption that at this point in time Satoshi was dead but hey I could be wrong. All we see is like a silhouette of a guy (who looks like Keiich/Satoshi) with a baseball bat ready to strike a girl on the ground reaching out to him who has the hair/outfit of Rena.
and i used to think that takano was an evil shit..
Yea me too!! Well she gives off that evil aura and has that evil voice so haha xD
Maybe she still is, since she let Reina know about her (inevitable) outcome.
A big thank you for translating that chunk of conversation. It’s like they compressed all this information specifically for this episode. My head nearly exploded too after reading the summary.
And paragraphing does wonders, seriously.
Reina is so much better than Keiichi in terms of deduction skills and combat capabilities. All Keiichi found was a syringe while she pieced together the entire puzzle (not without help, of course) without dying…yet.
Many thanks for this summary, I thought I understood at least the gist of what was going on in the raw while watching it, then this conversation comes and I was all “WTF are they talking about?”.
I tried using a dictionary but for some reason got the impression they were talknig about something supernatural which does not seem to be the case.
I still think Takano is evil. Did they mention she was dead for sure in this arc or just disappeared?
Rena’s deduction was right in Watanagashi but that does not mean she is totally right this time.
Excuse me while I go empty my brain, find an appropriate receptacle, and shake it silly.
*SHAKEY SHAKEY SHAKEY
OK, I’m done.
Well, at least one arc is explained… … …
In both the first arc and this one K1/Rena became mentally unstable and some of Rena’s instability comes from the information from Takano and Oishi much like K1 maybe that’s the think these arcs have and how this arc answers the questions of the first.
Yyi: Sorry about the big chunk in the middle there. I didnt realize it would get this large but I kept writing and writing and before I knew it whoa XD Rena was all like “you’re so smart Keiichi I’m glad you’re on my side” haha.
Matrim: It totally flew by me and I was like “omg word I don’t know..another word I don’t know” so I really had to watch it again looking up all those crazy words XD Actually I think they said that she disappeared but they had assumed she died? It follows the pattern of the first arc I believe.
Drm: After reading all these random webpages and stuff about whose “really” behind it all, none of this is adding up to me lol
Chirium: That could explain why Rena was “seeing bloody insects crawling out of her arm” ^^;
Well, that was my impression, too based more on similarities with other arcs and Ooishi looking for Takano than on actual precise understanding of what was being said. And the verb “korosu” (to kill) was certainly mentioned many many times in this episode, so I thought it would be better to ask, rather than guess or spend some hours playing certain lines over and over again and checking words in a dictionary, cursing my rudimentary Japanese.
I actually think Takano faked her death in the other arcs and she never actully died but it’s not as if I can really prove it for now.
Rena is probably going crazy, agreed. Not sure if her weird looking eyes in this episode was caused by this or just lazy animators. Or just my imagination.
Oh crap I think my head might explode from all that talking it’s like math class again.
Matrim> if youre referring to the last screenshot…then its lazy animators

shirou: yea this show really gets my brain going
Takano probably faked her death again, and it’s probably been to escape the guys in the van. Maybe she gave Rena her notes in order to set her back on a spiral to insanity…
i’d laugh if Takano comes back lol
