My Boss, My Hero - 01
Summer drama fest continues!
The story is pretty simple, pretty overused but despite my dislike for Nagase Tomoya he pulls it off pretty well. This is another drama you can add to your “Summer Johnny’s Dramas” addition list as it contains the lead singer of TOKIO and Tegoshi Yuuya from NEWS. Also features Tanaka Koki from Kat-Tun. The story is about the son of a Yakuza leader who’s about to retire and needs a new person to take over as boss. Tomoya’s character, Makio-kun is in line but he’s an idiot so his father tells him that he can become boss on one condition…if he goes to high school for a year and graduates properly. He agrees eventually, and when he’s almost on the verge of quits, he finds out his really smart brother is almost done with college (even though he’s been real sick) and sees it as a threat to him becoming the boss.
He has a lot of trouble adjusting to being a normal high school student. First of all he’s really dumb, and he can’t even write his own name in Kanji. (It sounds like his kanji knowledge is no better than mine but since I’m not Japanese I have an excuse ) Second of all, he’s a senior in high school, but his math knowledge is that of an elementary school student. All the kids around him start laughing and whispering saying that “Isn’t he gonna like fail?” He can’t smoke on school premises, and because his classroom is located on the opposite end of the building, he can’t get in time to grab one of the 12 or so pudding cups that the cafeteria guy puts out for sale. (I don’t get why Japan likes to give LIMITS to things, in America we’d just produce more as long as we can make money!)
He’s about to call it quits, and then he runs into a guidance counselor (?) who tells him the story of Hellen Keller and how she was always upset and angry that she couldn’t learn anything, but her teacher had patience with her. She eventually told him the story about how Hellen finally learned “water” (boy this brings back middle school memories) and from then on her life was great as she was able to learn more and more.
Eventually Makio and Yuuya (name to be posted some time later), come up with a plan, well mostly Yuuya since he’s a genious. The plan is to hop 15 meters from 1 building to the other to get to the cafeteria faster. They take down the school flag and use it as a parachute sorta thing to glide over the distance (Actually this is impossible but it worked for the plot of the show.) Eventually Makio glides over the building, and makes it in time to grab the last pudding. The guy who kicked him in the face almost gets it but then Makio backhands him and the pudding is his! At the end Makio & Yuuya become friends and they laugh while Makio’s mafia friends watch and are shocked because they’ve never seen him laugh like that before.
Upcoming Attractions: Makio’s school life is starting to get better. Ah hell just watch it ![]()

[...] When I first heard about this, I didn’t know it was a tv dorama. I immediately thought of the Korean movie with the same name. The movie was nowhere near as good as the many other K-movies I’ve seen, but it’s not total garbage like… say… Shinobi. The “My Boss My Hero” that I’ll be talking about today is the J-drama. The cast is fairly decent and it’s got many laughable parts -you’ll get the title reference once you watch it… or read my dealie-. [...]
Hey I lived in japan for a year but left after the first episode of this…where can I download it? Any ideas? I cant find it anywhere. Someone sent me a DVD of it but it got ruined before I got a chance to see it!!
well this drama’s awesome…it fills me up with a new youth enrgy, I like Tomoya Nagase’s acts..he suits his role so bad!!!! he’s cool…and the story’s great xcept the ending, maybe it needs more romance hehehe, don’t you guys agree??!!
Viva to nagase!!
Just decided to pick up this drama recently but honestly speaking, episode 1 was a real disappointment. A bit too exaggerated for my liking, and the funny parts were kinda forced. Especially the last part when they were laughing. I guess it was supposed to be comical but it was just plain weird. O_O
I’m planning to read the rest of your reviews before deciding whether to pick it up again. Kudos to you ;D
