While most people were probably watching fireworks, I was watching this…but mostly because it turns out my apartment balcony faces the opposite side of Philadelphia…where the fireworks were happening Anyway on with the show. Based on last week’s MKV mishap, I got the idea of doing Ouran Anime x Manga comparisons for the rest of the series. Since a few people already blog it just for the anime, this will be something “different” for you to look at aside from just typical episode summaries I suppose.

Generally the episode followed the manga pretty closely. This was the last chapter of volume 4, and afterwards is a special side comic that the mangaka draws every once in a while completely unrelated to Ouran Koukou. I especially like how they did the scene where they didn’t just pan out but showed first Tamaki and then the trampled Haruhi. What I like about the anime is it makes minor things in the manga seem more “fun”. This chapter honestly was boring as crap to me when I first read it, but the episode sort of “refreshed” it for me and actually it made more sense because I was willing to watch through it and I recall skimming through half the dialogue in the chapter. The Tamaki/puppy dog eye scene was done so well XDD. It was just half a page with 3 panels in the manga but the way they did the black screening of the characters slowly falling for it was great!
The twins’ appearance here was done really well. I liked how they paneled from Hikari to Kaoru only revealing half their faces instead of just doing a full body shot as seen in the chapter. It made them seem cooler that way, and this is coming from a person who really dislikes the pair.

Now on to the differences. For some reason I noticed most differences occur with any scenes regarding Tamaki and Haruhi. There was a REALLY GOOD scene left out in the episode where Tamaki met Haruhi’s dad and once again in this one. Tamaki and Haruhi did NOT get lost in a garden they went to hide in some kind of a place behind a building…but the place was very “semai” (tight/closed spaced.) So of course Tamaki was blushing his head off anytime Haruhi accidentally bumped into him. The other funny thing that they cut out was when Tamaki was telling Haruhi about him playing piano for his sick mother, Haruhi imagined a little Tamaki playing Piano with his mom feeling worse from it and begging him to stop and go outside. (To which Tamaki just said “No way” and continued his bantering. :lol:) I also didn’t like how they panned to the roses when Tamaki said at the end “let’s do this again” followed by Haruhi’s “Sou desu ne.” The expression of shoujoey goodness in the manga is just NOT CONVEYED by 2 stinkin’ roses!

Well that’s about it for this week. Next week Haruhi goes to do part time work at her grandpa’s store, and her grandpa is also…you guessed it, a transvestite.
