Japanese Boy Band Goes on “Mission Otaku”

I was going through my photobucket account and stumbled upon screencaps of a D no Arashi episode from about 2 years ago. This was way before Densha Otoko even aired on TV. Arashi, is a boy band in Japan and they went to visit Akihabara and to observe “Otaku”. This episode cracked me up.

Otaku...nope. OtoME! First they visited the house of a girl otaku…aka “otome”. Her entire room (small as it is) was plastered with cosplay! They even asked her to put on one of her costumes. They asked “Why do you collect all this stuff?” since she had a bunch of Kanon and Clannad posters on her wall…she said “Because it’s cute”. She even had a Kasumi body pillow. The guy in the back cosplaying DBZ is the “otaku” friend of the “otome”. Masaki Aiba (from Arashi) decided he’d try one of her Nurse outfits.

I LOVE CHIKAGE11!1!!
Next they visited the house of a Sister Princess fanatic…and also a jousou fanatic. He not only makes costumes, he makes female costumes and wears them himself. He posed wearing the costume of Chikage.

Irasshaimase, goshyuujinsama!
Next they visited the all famous maid cafe! Everyone there was sitting with a huge book bag and at least 90% of them had a laptop out (or if they were eating it was probably in that huge bookbag of theirs.)

Hang on a sec, my Winny download is almost done.
They asked one of the locals “Why do you guys all have such big bag packs?” He answered that they always carry their laptops or videogames with them. While walking through the streets Aiba-chan kept pointing to the hentai posters going “Hey look look at that poster! It’s so erotic!”

The ultimate way to trap an Otaku
For the fun of it, the guys decided to play a little prank at the otaku hanging out at the maid cafe. They got their hands on some kind of rare Rei Ayanami figure and placed it in a transparent box on display. The moment the “curtain” was revealed they all started gathering around it. Actually some of them started whipping out their wallets and pushing each other out of the way to get a better look at it! This episode really cracked me up, and before watching Densha Otoko it really gave me a look on what the Japanese otaku are like. The air date I believe was sometime around the week of November 21, 2004.

The climax of the show was them all doing a random cosplay they picked out of a hat xD

By the way the show “D no Arashi” is no more. It finished airing, and the “new” season is now known as “G no Arashi“.

Mm, maybe it’s just me, but I think it would have been even better if they blew up the figure in the case or caused it to ignite or some such. Then we could have all gotten a good laugh out of the fanboys sweet, salty tears.

 They probably couldn’t do that since the figure was probably “rented” for the sake of the goofy show, but yes that would have been amusing to watch.

Oh man, I want to run a figure rental store. That would be the bestest business ever gee gosh golly!

ROFL how can you subject yourself to work in those maid cafe’s. it always boggles my mind.

.. then again I was joking w/my friend how we need to work down in Akihabara and cosplay and karaoke-ing to anime songs from outside of stores for business. >__>
